The judicial Committee of the Romanian Senate voted in favour of annuling
immunity of senator Corneliu Vadim Tudor six to two and one abstention
yesterday thus answering a new request of Justice Minister Valeriu Stoica.
The request is based on seven penal briefs concerning senator Tudor. This
is to be debated by the plenum of the Senate alongside the report of the
Committee drawn after yesterday's session at a date to be established by
the Permanent Bureau of the Senate.Senator Tudor was absent from the
proceedings yesterday informs RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI quoted by RADOR.
The session of the Agriculture Committee also yesterday resumed debates on
the draft law concerning restoration of land and forests, a law innitiated
by Senator Vasile Lupu, a member of the CDNPP.Debates yesterday highlighted
dissatisfaction of the opposition whose amendments to the law had been
rejecteed.The Party for Social Democracy of Romania had proposed that this
new law should not abolish property documents according to Law l8/l99l if
it provides for restoration within the surfaces of land or forests once
owned. Rejection of amendments came as a result of stand taken by Senator
Vasile Lupu who said that once accepted these amendments might further
favours already granted by implementation of the afore mentioned law, says

with leaders of the big trade union centrals also yesterday. At the end of
the meeting the leader of the Alfa cartel, Mr. Bogdan Hossu was quoted by
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI declaring that although talks with the Government
that lasted for two weeks ended in solutions for resolving demands of the
Trade Unions the Government has not taken action in this sense. As a follow
up the leaders of the Trade Union federations told the Premier that
transports will see general warning strike between o7.oo -o9.oo next
Monday; the general warning strike will continue in other branches of the
economy for another two hours on the same day. According to RADOR the Prime
Minister resumes megociations with the trade unions next Tuesday in an
attempt to find solutions to issues still diverging. The Press Conference

of the opinion that the recent meeting at Cotroceni was the stage of two
fundamentally opposed attitudes to overcome crisis.According to RADIO
ROMANIA ACTUALITATI the president of the party, Mr.Ion Iliescu said that
the government anti crisis programme is aimed at overcoming apex of foreign
debt pay back deadline this year while his party estimates that Romania is
faced by a crisis of politics and machinery generating the economic
growth.Mr. Iliescu added that a compromise solution might be found by the
harmonization of short term targets with a more ample peogramme of stopping

opinion poll conducted by the Center of Urban and Regional Sociology, the
Party for Social Democrcy of Romania and Ion Iliescu come first with the
voters if parliamentary and presidential elections were held now, says
RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI.The Romanian Convention for Democracy and
President Emil Constantinescu come second at a difference of six and eight
per cent respectively.The Alliance for Romania President Teodor Melescanu
came equal with the President of Romania in the poll.
Former miners' leaders that led rampage actions of the former were heard by
military prosecutors who yesterday ended judicial inquiries regarding the
violent confrontation at Stoenesti.They are accused of association to
committing offences, siding with perpetrators of crimes and public order
assault.Trial before the Court of Law begins after military prosecutors
formulate all accusaations against former miner's leaders. The Supreme
Court postpones trial of Deputy Gabriel Bivolaru until l2 May. The Supreme
Court of Justice, Penal Section postponed trial of Mr. Gabriel Bivolaru as
he had no attorney present and for lack of legal proceedings. Mr. Bivolaru
is tried for funds embezzlement to the detriment of the Romanian Bank for
Delopment to the value of 298 thousand million lei.

[01] Visit to Romania of major general Henry Kievenaar,United States
Defense Department Europe and NATO director
Prime minister Radu Vasile yesterday received major general Henry Kievenaar,
United States Defense Department Europe and NATO director; during the talk
they approached issues related to the restructuring and modernization of
the Romanian Army, for ensuring operation compatibility with the NATO
forces. The guest was quoted by RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI appreciating the
joint Romanian-British project as fitting modern army and not demanding any
additional budget. The Romanian prime minister said the Romanian army must
become more competitive, according to RADOR.
[02] Petre Roman meets Henry Kievenaar
The President of the Romanian Senate Petre Roman met yesterday afternoon
with major general Henry Kievenaar now visiting our country.The President
of the Senate was quoted by Radio Romania Actualitati saying that during
the talk they approached restructure of the Romanian army so that it is
campatible with NATO standards: this programme envisages the passing by the
Parliament of Romania of a multiannual budget, most probably for a five
year period, able to ensure army stability and an operational capacity of
at least 8o per cent in keeping with NATO standards.
[03] The President of the Chamber of Deputies met with NATO delegation at
the seat of the Romanian Parliament.
The President of the Chamber of Deputies of the Romanian Parliament, Ion
Diaconescu met yesterday afternoon at the seat of the Parliament with the
NATO delegation led by major general Henry Kievenaar.Also present were US
ambassador to Romania, James Rosapepe and state secretary with the Defense
Ministry of Romania Ioan Mircea Plingu.RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI also
recalls that previously the NATO delegation was received by premier Radu
Vasile.
[04] The French foreign minister, Hubert Vedrine visits Bucharest
The French foreign minister Hubert Vedrine who arrived at Bucharest
zesterday afternoon was received by President Emil Constantinescu last
night at the Cotroceni Palace. Also present were, on the Romanian side,
foreign minister Andrei Plesu,the minister for European integration,
Alexandru Herlea and presidential counsellor Zoe Petre,RADIO ROMANIA
ACTUALITATI reports.
[05] Talks between the Romanian and the French foreign minister
The first part of the talks between the two foreign ministers was devoted
to bilateral ties. Andrei Plesu said relations between Bucharest and Paris
cannot be altered by circumstances and added that France was the first
foreign investor in Romania. Hubert Vedrine told his Romanian opposite
number that with a view to the EU Helsinki conference next December France
intends to speed up tempo of assistance to Romania. The second part of the
talks was devoted to the crisis in Kosovo. Both foreign ministers reached
the conclusion that their stands were very similar, identical or
complementary, RADIO ROMANIA ACTUALITATI reports quoted by RADOR.

Legion d'Honeur.
Wednesday evening at the Embassy of France the French foreign minister
presented la Legionn d'Honeur with the rank of grand chevalier to prime
minister Radu Vasile.Romania's foreign minister Andrei Plesu received the
same outstanding decoration with the rank of commander. Both Romanian
officials were very highly praised by the host in the name of France, RADIO
