  • [01] Romanian President to start a debate over economic and social problems of the country

    The Romanian President Emil Constantinescu has decided to pay all attention to setting up a comprehensive debate over the economic and social problems of the country. This debate is due to be attended by representatives of political parties, of the Government, trade unions, businessmen, civil associations and media - the Press Office of the Presidency has announced. The head of state started a series of prior talks on Saturday 20 when Mr Constantinescu met a delegation of economic experts while on Monday he met representatives of the Social Democracy Party.     [02] Meeting of the ruling coalition leaders

    The leaders of the ruling coalition decided on Monday morning that the Prime-Minister should declare Governemnt's responsibility over a law aimed to speed up reform and easing the privatization process. At the end of the talks the President of the Christian-Democratic Peasants' Party (CDNPP) Ion Diaconescu said that the draft of the new law would be examined by experts from each political party who would state thir own opinioons upun this law. The Prime Vice-President of the Liberal Party Valeriu Stoica has said that the legal framework for privatization is going to be influenced as other laws directly connected to the reform process are due to be altered. These laws are: the Audit Court law, the bankruptcy law and the law over protection of the minoritary shareholder. The Vice-President of the Democrat Party Victor Babiuc has said that the project is due to be finalized this week depending on the objections by the political factions in the Parliament and that after talks over the law they will submit it to the Parliament for approval.     [03] Draft laws passed by the Senate

    The Senate passed the draft law on ratifying the convention betweeen Romania and the Kingdom of the Netherlands over avoiding double imposal and prevention of tax evasion on Monday. The Senate has also passed the draft law on approving the Government Bill no. 8/1999 over ratifying the agreement between Black Sea Economic Cooperation members. They have also passed the draft law on ratifying the joint convention over safe handling of used fuel and radioactive waste. RADOR, March 23

    [04] "NATO cannot be envisaged without Bulgaria and Romania", Turkish President said

    The Turkish President Suleyman Demirel has said while in the Bulgarian capital Sofia that NATO could not be envisaged without Bulgaria and Romania. He has told a press conference that Turkey will act along with NATO for solving the Kosovo crisis and stressed that this action was not against a specific country but it is aimed to put an end to the conflict in this Serbian province. RADOR, March 23
