  • [01] Fist Meeting of Romanian National Committee

    The Marble Hall of the Senate hosted the first meeting of the Romanian National Committee which is to co-ordinate the events set up by Romania for the 50-th anniversary of the Council of Europe establishment. The chairman of the Romanian National Committee, Petre Roman, has stressed the role performed by the Council of Europe in the process of upgrading the Romanian legislaton, as well as for our country's integration in the European structures. There has been approved a joint agenda on the event, such as publishing books on the activity of the Council, a festive session of the two chambers of the Parliament dedicated to the event, as well as a session with the participation of guests from the 41 membre states, which might take place in Bucharest in October.     [02] International Investors Conference in Bucharest

    An international conference of investors on the privatization of water and sewerage systems was held by the City Hall in Bucharest. Representatives from France, Germany and Italy were present. Water Administration Authority must be privatized by September, and the majority share package up to 70 per cent will belong to the winner of the bidding for a 25 years period. Also, 10 per cent of shares go to the employees, which are pledged not to give them to other persons outside the future company. RADOR

    [03] A New Sentence for Miron Cozma

    The Court of Law in the city of Pitesti has sentenced Miron Cozma to two years and a half in prison for the raw he aroused in VEGA Complex, the town of Petrosani, and five years in prison for beating up the journalist Gigi Nicolau from the "Academia Catavencu" journal. These sentences ar not to be added to the 18 years one to which he was sentenced on February 15 by the Supreme Court of Justice for the miners manifestations in September 1991, as the crimes perpetrated by te miners leader are different. RADOR

    [04] Protest Meeting in Brasov

    Several thousands of people have demonstrated in the city of Brasov against severe fall down of the living standard, and have claimed the dismissal of the government. The protesters have answered the appeal launched by the main trade union confederations in Romania. They have also demanded early elections which, in their oppinion, will take the country out of poverty. RADOR

    [05] Open Letter Handed to the Romanian President by the National Trade Union Block

    The National Trade Union Block is asking President Emil Constantinescu, in an open letter, not to promulgate the State Budget Law on the current year, taking into account that the draft law forbids, according to the Block, the right to collective negotiations as it freezes this year the wages in the autonomous administration authorities and the budgetary sector. RADOR

    [06] National Liberal Party Has Joined the International Liberal Movement

    The National Liberal Party has been accepted as member with full rights in the Liberal International Movement, and Valeriu Stoica has been appointed as deputy chairman of the body. The chairman Mircea Ionescu Quintus has praised the decision of the participants at the Congress of the International Liberal Movement in Bruxelles. RADOR

    [07] Request of Parliamentary Groups of Democrat Magyar Union in Romania

    Parliamentary groups of The Democrat Magyar Union in Romania in the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies have requested the culture committees of the Parliament to examine the National Audio and Video Council decision which stipulates that broadcasts in national languages should be translated or subtitled in Romanian The Union's leader, Marko Bela, has stated that his Union will try to take to justice this decision, as it encroaches upon the Audio and Video Law and the Romanian Constitution, is opposed to international treaties, it restricts the right of speaking in mother tongue, and the broadcasts become thus ridiculous and do not reach their goals. RADOR

    [08] Town of Sibiu Is To Be Declared a Place of National Interest

    The minister of culture, Ion Caramitru, goes to Munich from the 7th to 10th of March, at the invitation of "Hans Seidel" an "Messeschmidt" Foundation, for promoting the programme of declaring the town of Sibiu and its surroundings a pace on national interest. The governments of Germany and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are intereseted to participate in performing the programme. RADOR
