[05] Opinions regarding Pope's visit to Romania

The visit by Pope John-Paul II to Romania is going to strenghten dialogue between the Orthodox and the Catholic churches in Romania. This was said by the spokesman for the CDNPP Remus Opris at apress conference. He added that this visit was also important because it shows that Romania enjoys good appreciation abroad. The CDNPP is interested in the existence of harmonious relations between the Romanian Orthodox and Greek-Catholic churches as that CDNPP former leaders as Maniu and Coposu were Greek-Catholic Christians. The Romanian Ambassador to Vatican Teodor Bakonski has said: "It is a typical visit; it is not going to be one of the Holy Father's usual apostolic visits as he does in Catholic countries. First it is going to be an ecumenical visit as it is for the forts time when the Pontiff meets the head of an Orthodox Church in a mainly Orthodox Christian country. The visit has also two other purposes: a pastoral one as the Pope will meet Romanian Roman- and Greek-Catholics and a political one as he will also meet President Constantinescu who was in fact the one that invited the Pope to visit Romania. The visit is not seen as an arbitration in the conflict between the two churches in Romania but the presence of the pontiff in our country would give an impetus to inter-confessional pacification; this is not going to be done through explicit action but through a healthy secondary effect of his visit".
