  • [01] Debates on draft budget continue

    The Senate and the Chamber of Deputies continued debating on the draft budget on Wednesday. They passed the articles on budgets of public institutions and of ministries of Defence, Domestic Afairs and Public Works and Habitat. The Defence ministry was proposed to receive 78854.2 billion lei and the Internal Ministry - 6435.6 billion. These are provisional budgets as they can change when the annexes to the budget law are discussed. It's the same for the Habitat Ministry's 2256.8 bil lei budget. Debates on the law no. 16 on social and culture expenses were postponed for the meeting on Thurday. RADOR, February 11

    [02] The law on building restitution has to be adopted

    The Speaker of the Senate Petre Roman told the press on Wednesday that the Parliament had to adopt the law on building restitution quickly and in tne same time to take measures to protect the tenants in nationalized houses. He believes that if this law was in force, most of those tenants would not have been in danger of being evicted. Mr. Roman also said that adoption of the law on restitution of farming fields had to be done with the condition of creating the National Farmenr's Agency. About restitution of forests, Mr Roman said no common point of view was reached yet within the Democratic Party. RADOR, February 11

    [03] Procedure for outlawing the Greater Romania party

    The liberal Party has appointed Senator Paul Pacuraru in charge with setting up the procedure for outlawing the Greater Romania party. This was proposed by liberal leaders after the last miners' protests and it was backed by the Justice minister Valeriu Stoica himself. The proposal is due to be handed to the Senate for approval. Senator Pacuraru said: "The Greater Romanian party had taken various extremist and xenophobic actions. There are also involvements in actions aimed to shake public order by this appeal to civic insubordinationand a whole series of such things that are already known". He has also said that in at least two weeks he is going to finish gathering necessary evidences. The file is due to be submitted to the Senate and then to the Constitutional Court for the final decision. The permanent bureaus of the two chambers recently ruled that immunity of a MP can be lifted with half + 1 of the votes and not woth 2 thirds as it was until now. RADOR, February 11

    [04] Prime-Minister Radu Vasile ended his visit to Hungary

    Prime-Minister Radu Vasile came back from his official visit to Hungary on Wednesday night. He met on Wednesday the officials of city of Gyula, where some 3500 Romanians live. Mr Vasile said they agreed on the possibility to create a honorary Romanian consulate in this city with possibility for this consulate to become a permanent one. They also talked on creating new border check points in the area. Mr. Vasile has also met the the Holy Timotei of Arad, Ienopola and Halmag and the new Bishop of Gyula Sofronie Drancec. He has also visited the "Nicolae Balcescu" Romanian teaching highschool in the city and he met representatives of the Romanian community there. RADOR, February 11

    [05] European Parliament approved the report on EU regulations over countries whose citizens need visas

    Meeting in Strasbourg on Wednesday, the European Parliament approved the report by Deputy Klaus Lehne on EU regulations over countries whose citizens need visas to enter communitary space. The report was approved with 466 votes for, 43 against and 7 abstentions. The 27th ammendment of the report on the possibility for Romania and Bulgaria to be excluded from the list was approved by 304 votes for, 187 against and 14 abstentions. The spokesman for the Romanian Foreign Ministry Carmen Podgoreanu said that the vote wa showever showing concerns over free circulation of Romanians and Bulgarians. During debates European Commissioner Monti said that Romania and Bulgaria were on that list due to the importance the EU gives to the matter of illegal migration. Mr Monti also said that Romania and Bulgaria had great progresses in border control issues and re-admission. The report is due to be recommended to the European Commission that is due to consider it after the Amsterdam Agreement comes into force. It will also have to be approved by parliaments of France and Belgium. After that, the Commission is due to recommend it to the EU Council of internal and justice ministers that has bi-annual meetings. RADOR, February 11
