  • [01] President Emil Constantinescu on Opposition's censure motion

The Romanian president believes that the censure motion is part of the Opposition's constitutional rights, but it is most inadequate to submit such a motion now, at a time when all political forces should better concentrate on the reform and restructuring programme. In a statement on Sunday, the president said: "On the other hand, we should carefully consider whay would happen while debating it in parliament. If the motion will be the source of old political games and bravura speeches, then it will be a failure for all of us; but, on the contrary, if the motion is to lead to a detailed analyse of the mistakes or to suggestions able to ensure a better co-operation between the Majority, the Opposition and the civil society, then the motion will hit the task we suppose everybody sincerely expected - a move which would really ensure the parliament's growing prestige as a democratic institution of the Romanian State". [02] Prime Minister Radu Vasile has doubts...

Prime Minister Radu Vasile says that, as far as he is concerned, the adoption by parliament of the censure motion "The Poverty" may be the "most elegent way to end the story". The recent motion may be discussed and then passed this week and, according to the prime minister, "despite the support that the leaders of all parties in the governing coalition clearly expressed", each party proved that "there were factions whose position was rather similar to the position expressed by the Opposition". "I fear that, despite all these declarations of support, the leaders of the coalition parties cannot overwhelmingly control their groups in parliament", Mr Radu Vasile concluded. RADOR

[03] Censure motion is not expected to solve crisis, the ApR believes

The Alliance for Romania Party (ApR) says the Party of Social Democracy in Romania (PDSR), the Romanians' National Unity Party (PUNR) and the Greater Romania Party (PRM) were too hasty to submit a cesure motion, and the move was not expected to solve the crisis. The ApR believes that the motion was mainly supposed to define the Opposition's position on the governing coalition and address the public opinion. According to the ApR, the censure motion will turn into another useless debate, a well known show allowing the PDSR to reiterate its accusations on what the government did in the last two years and the government to blame the PDSR for what it failed to do while in power. The ApR believes the censure motion is necessary, but the move should be prepared after consultations between all the responsible political forces wishing to form a Cabinet designed to end the crisis. [04] PAR is not to support Opposition's motion against Radu Vasile Cabinet

Romania's Alternative Party says it is not to support the Opposition's censure motion against the Radu Vasile Cabinet. In a coomunique issued to the press, the PAR says the options and the measures in the motion proves that the left-wing Opposition is unable to detect the economic and social realities and its comeback to power is actually the main threat to Romania. Expressing its deep concern about Romania's deteriorating situation, the PAR has announced it was going to submit its own censure motion at the next session in parliament. RADOR

[05] PROPACT has applied for full CDR membership

At its National Assembly in Bucharest on Sunday, the National Trade Union of the Romanian Peasants (PROPACT) has asked the Democratic Convention in Romania (CDR) to accept the trade union as one of its full members. The meeting focused on issues concerning the short term reform in agriculture and forests, amendments to the law allowing the return of all former land properties, the current situation of the nationalised houses and the return of forest properties. The speakers - MPs, Cabinet ministers, peasants or former owners of confiscated houses and enterprises - have all insisted that a democratic state should observe the property rights. RADOR

[06] Miron Cozma, reelected as president of the Mining Trade Unions League in Jiu Valley

With only 14 votes against, Miron Cozma was reelected as president of the Mining Trade Unions League in Jiu Valley. As there was no other candidate to challenge him, Miron Cozma said the vote on Saturday proved the confidence of the miners. He promised the miners that the league's leadership would firmly defend their interests in the future. RADOR

[07] Seminar in Kishinev on "Media Connections"

The participants in the seminar on "Media Connections" in Kishinev have adopted on Sunday a joint declaration expressing their commitment to promote a joint strategy designed to ensure a continuous information exchange netween Bucharest and Kishinev. They have also agreed to set up a consulting body at journalists unions level to allow an accurate image of Romania in the Republic of Moldova and a similar image of the Republic of Moldova in Romania. The seminar was organised by the Moldovan-Romanian Communication and Media Foundation with the support of the Romanian Government. Participants included journalists interested in developing the co-operation between the two countries. On Sunday, the journalists met Moldovan MPs. RADOR

    [08] Hanuka celebrations

The opening of the Hanuka celebrations took place at the Jewish Temple in Bucharest on Sunday. The celebrations included songs dedicated to the Festival of the Light - the Hanuka - and an introduction to Hanuka traditions. According to tradition, the Rabbi has lighted the first of the six candles to be lighted during the feast. The head of the Jeweish Communities in Romania, academician Micolae Cajal, Prime Minister Radu Vasile, the Israeli ambassador to Romania, HE Abraham Milo, representatives of the Armenian Orthodox Church and the Roman Catholic Church, senators, deputies and diplomats have been also attending the celebrations.
