[01] Szeckler Forum for UDMR's Renewal
Called by the Honorary President of the Democratic Union of Ethic
Hungarians in Romania (UDMR), Laszlo Tokes, in the Cernat city of Romania's
Covasna county, the Seckler Forum for UDMR's Renewal has asked the Romanian
Parliament to amend the existing legislation and approximate it to
international law on local autonomy and selfruling. Bishop Laszlo Tokes
said in an interview that the forum was aimed at restructuring the UDMR
following accusations of failing to answer the Hungarian community's
interests and breaking its initial programme. The UDMR honorary president
pointSd out that the meeting in Cernat, althogh unofficial, took place
however inside and not outside the UDMR. He accused the UDMR of neglecting
the party's autonomy programme while becoming a ruling party. Mr Tokes
however denied that the forum was aimed at underminig the UDMR leadership's
authiruty. RADOR
[02] PRM protests against Szeckler Forum's resolutions
In a press communique, the Greater Romania Party (PRM) has strongly
condemned the resolutions of the Szeckler Forum in Cernat under the
presidency of bishop Laszlo Tokes. PRM believes that the "happening in
Cernatul de Jos is a serious and dangerous escalation of the Hungarian
irredentism since August 1940 up until now, and a genuine declaration of
war to the Romanian national united state". The PRM is demanding the
immediate outlaw of the UDMR, and the emergency expulsion of bishop Tokes.
The PRM believes that the counties of Harghita and Covasna should be
militarised as the Hungarian minority already started the ethnic cleansSng
of Romanians since December 1989. The PRM calls for a government of
national unity and blames Romania's President Emil Constantinescu for his
position towards the UDMR. RADOR
[03] New judges with Romania's Supreme Court of Justice
A press communique issued by the Romanian Presidency says that President
Emil Constantinescu has appointed Buta Madalina Cristina, Ciubotaru Mihai,
Ezer Emilia, Lungeanu Viorica, Lungu Fulga, Lutac Georgeta, Mihai Nicolae,
Popa Eugenia, Rotar Gheorghe and Toaca Dorica as judges with Romania's
Supreme Court of Justice. The appointment was made following a proposal by
the Supreme Council of Romania's Judiciary. RADOR
[04] CEFTA meeting
While coming back from Prague where he attended the meeting of the CEFTA
prime ministers, Romania's Prime Minister Radu Vasile said the CEFTA has
decided the setting up a subcommittee for agricultural affairs to examine
the policies and the subsidy procedures in each CEFTA member country.
According to the prime minSster, the decision was made after participants
examined the recent developments in the trade with agricultural products
between the CEFTA countries. He declared the debates also focused on ways
of extending the cooperation concerning the circulation of capital - a very
difficult issue, he believed, as each country was connected to capitals
abroad. Mr Radu Vasile said he disagreed with his Cezch counterpart's
proposal of a particular institution for the Visegrad countries. While
attending a radio programme on Saturday, Prime Minister Radu Vasile has
concluded that the mutual support between the CEFTA countries was the only
solution to a fair European integration process. Agriculture Minister Dinu
Gavrilescu said recently that a "protectionist wind blowed among the CEFTA
member countries". The deputy commissioner for industries and services in
Romania's House of Deputies, Barbu Pitigoi, also an MP representing the
ruling Christian Democrat national Peasant Party (PNTCD), explained thS
allegation: "There are countries of different industrial development among
the CEFTA members; their policies of financing the economic departments is
also different from state to state. Such differences have forced some of
the member countries to impose customs duties in their attempt to prevent
an unbearable situation for the producers". RADOR
[05] "Our Romanian Language" Festival
The Youth Palace in the Ukrainian town of Chernautz has hosted the "Our
Romanian Language" Festival - a traditional event for the Romanian minority
in Ukraine's Northern Bucovina. As the RRA reports, the festival was
organised by the Mihai Eminescu Society and large numbers of participants
and guests came from Romania to attend the event. The deputy representing
the Romanian minority in the Supreme Rada in Kiev, Ion Popescu, has
announced that 4,000 out of the expected 60,000 signatures were to be
submitted to the Ukrainian Parliament in support of the mother tongue
teaching protection which was subSect to restrictions according to article
7 in the draft Education Law. RADOR
[06] Congress of the Mining Trade Unions Confederation in Romania
Delegates to the Congress of the Mining Trade Unions Confederation in
Romania opening on Saturday in Bucharest have examined during debates on
Sunday the opportunity of a general strike in all mining areas. As the
press was denied access to debates, one should recall however that trade
union leader Miron Cozma has announced recently that a general strike was
expected for Monday unless the miners were to get their unpaid salaries.
The congress is also expected to examine the trade union's recent activity
and operate changes into the statute. The new president of the
confederation was to be elected on Sunday. RADOR
[07] Meeting of European Universities Association
While back in Romania from Berlin where he attended the 11-th General
Assembly of the European Universities Association (EUA), Romanian Education
Minister Andrei Marga said the Seeting focused on the "European University
and Its Public Role". According to the minister, participants have
discussed the resposibilities of the European University in economy,
administration and politics. RADOR
[08] Romanian Fireman's Day
Celebrations on the occasion of the Fireman's Day and the 150 anniversary
of the Dealul Spirii battle have been taking place in Bucharest. A
religious service and a wreath-laying ceremony was organised Sunday morning
at the Firemen's Memorial on the behalf of the Romania's Presidency,
Bucharest City Hall, Interior Ministry, Defence Ministry and other bodies
