[01] A seminar on "PNTCD on the Verge of the Third Millenium"A two-day seminar on "PNTCD on the Verge of the Third Millenium" has opened in Bucharest on Saturday. Participants in the seminar have concluded that the Christian Democratic National Peasant Party (PNTCD) should support the governing programme and make every effort to implement it. While pointing out that the coalition was about to design a new model of cooperation based on cross-party cooperation on issues concerning the economy and privatisation, PNTCD believes that, as far as its participation in the governing coalition was concerned, the party should consider radical measures in case the coalition was not getting back to normal. While actually trying to promote understanding between parties in the coalition, the PNTCD was accused of being too weak. Therefore, the party is committed to provide straight answers to all attacks and insinuations. RADORIn his message to his colleagues, Prime Minister Radu Vasile said "Romania was about to be ruled by governing coalitions in the next 20 years" and warned that party members should be ready to overcome its future crises. "There is only one chance for Romania: though not spectacular, the relatively good results the government had until now", Mr Vasile concluded. RADOR In his address to participants, former Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea said the Democratic Party (PD) promoted blackmail and blocked some draft laws, though he admitted that the PNTCD mamde its owm mistakes: its major mistake was the party's attempt to cover a fake stability, a move unvailing the lack of strategy on the matter". He said ealry elections would have been justified in case all parties would have expressed their unconditioned committment to golbal reform". He warned PNTCD was about to lose its identity and unity as it already lost, for a while at least, some of its power within the government by renouncing its main tasks. Mr Ciorbea said he was winting to see the progress the new government would make towards the restructuring of autonomous utilities. He said the programmes the government put forward were actually quite old. The restructuring of the Democratic Convention in Romania (CDR) should make it establish itself as a cetre-right political alliance aimed at discouraging the social-democrat pole and its claimes of being an alternative to the government in power, Mr Ciorbea concluded. RADOR PNTCD leader Ion Diaconescu has shared the opinion of the party's Vicepresident Victor Ciorbea. He has indicated his party was still supporting the Radu Vasile Cabinet, but he expressed the hope that, in case a new crisis was about to emerge, most of the party members would accept radical measures such as early elections, a minority government or the withdrawal of the party from the governing coalition. RADOR PNTCD Vicepresident Gavril Dejeu is dissatisfied with the image of his party in press reports. He said the reason might be the fact that Romanian mass media was under the control of other political sources. Mr Dejeu believes that PNTCD should restore the confidence of the public opinion by breaking up the monopoly belonging to party enemies. RADOR While attending the seminar, the acting Mayor of Bucharest, Viorel Lis, promised to restore the waters supply nets and solve the problem of homes. He announced the project a of new underground railway connecting the Magheru Blvd. to the Free Press Plaza and the extension of the Bucharest sewerage by 200 km. RADOR [02] CDR should be a real centre-right political force"While in the former Ciorbea Cabinet, the National Liberal Party (PNL) had to play the role of a mediator; but further mediation could make the PNL lose its identity, and we did so, because we thought the coalition was very important and should be mantained as such", PNL Vicepresident Valeriu Stoica said. While attending the meeting of the PNL branch in Alba county on Sunday, Mr Stoica said the time had come for the PNL to establish its role and place within the Democratic Convention of Romania (CDR) and programmes were planned to launch a real liberal offensive. Referring to the CDR restructuring, PNL vicepresident said: "The CDR should become a centre-right political force promoting a clear centre-right policy. The CDR should be perceived as a centre-right political force, and its programme should include every guidline to allow this happen".
