  • [01] 80-th anniversary of the union of Bassarbia and Bucovina

Romanian President Emil Constantinescu has attended a solemn meeting celebrating the 80-th anniversary of the union of Bassarabia and Bucovina. The president has stressed the historic significance of the year 1918, when Romania succeeded in reaching her natural borders for the first time. Here are some excerpts from the president's address: "For high party and state reasons, we were banned from recalling the moment when the Romanian Srovinces of Bassarabia and Bucovina were taken away. The Hertza province and the Serpents' Island were removed from history textbooks, but they should be never removed from our souls". The president expressed his support for the restoration of relations between Romanians allover the world, despite the hard times we were living. On the president's left, an empty chair was aimed at recalling the memory of Ilie Ilascu, the patriot who was often mentioned in the presidential address because, as the president put it, the national ideal should never be abandoned. [02] President Constantinescu displeased with ministers' image in Romanian media

The idea of Prime Minister designate Radu Vasile to ban his ministers' participation in TV talk-shows was born in the presidential Palace of Cotroceni. Mr Radu Vasile's decision was confirmed by recent remarks the Romanian president made: "This obsession about ridiculous matters makes the delight of endless talk-shows. Chatty gossipS and misery are the topics discussed by both guests and hosts. It is maybe the saddest thing to happen. They have become what we have expected them to become, though they were not perceived as they should be. It seems democracy has its own perversions, and we are not supposed to get rid of them too easily". The president believes that the existing differences between Cabinet ministers have only one cause: "Unfortunately, due to all these continuous accusations, and meaningless obsession about politics that, we have to admit, makes the ferocious delight of the media, the ministers are not perceived as they should be". RADOR, April 6

The Coordinating Committee of Romania's Alternative Party (PAR) met in Bucharest on Sunday. During its meeting on Saturday, the party leadership has decided to exclude the three leaders Horia Rusu, Dinu Patriciu and Dinu Zamfirescu and other 15 members of the PL Executive Committee from party. As RRA reports, the PL leader informed that, following the decision, most of participants then met at PL'93 former headquarters and decided to designate Horia Rusu as leader of the party, and remove President Cerveni from office.

Reiterating Nicolae Cerveni's position, a PL Press Bureau communique signed by Marilena Calinescu says the decision of designating Horia Rusu as president of the PL by 30 alleged members of the National Council was a diversion badly affecting the party. At the same time, the communique says those involved should suffer the consequences. RADOR, April 6

[06] Romanian diplomats in Bonn related to Romanian criminals operating in Germany

A series of irregularities were discovered at the Romanian Consulate in Bonn.
