  • [01] Interior Minister Dejeu has ended his tour in Northern Romania

    The town of Oradea was the last stage of the tour the Interior Minister Gavril Dejeu has started four days ago in five northern Romanian counties including Bistrita-Nasaud, Maramures, Satu Mare, Salaj and Bihor. After talks with town officials and cult representatives, minister Dejeu appreciated that "unlike the situation in the counties of Satu Mare and Maramures, there are no major interconfessional differences in the county of Bihor". Mr Dejeu admitted that, in some areas, there were "sources of unrest" on land legislation issues but he stopped short of mentioning them. On the other hand, he warned: "The reform is already started and it should be completed. If not, Romania will face further losses". RADOR, February 23

    [02] PD Coordination Council proceedings in Arges county

    The Coordination Council proceedings of the Arges branch of the Democratic Party (PD) were organised in the Arges capital of Pitesti on Saturday in the presence of PD leader Petre Roman. The agenda included the PD Arges Permanent Bureau report and elections for a new Coordination Council. Mr Ion Carstoiu was elected as president of the PD Coordination Council in the Arges county. Mr Petre Roman has presented the PD main strategy in the very next future and the PD position on the main problems Romania was now facing. RADOR, February 23

    [03] Romanian Army Chief of Staff on a visit to Washington

    The Chief of Staff of the Romanian Army, division general Constantin Degeratu has left Romania on Sunday for a visit to Washington aimed at extending the military cooperation between the two countries and implementing its main objectives as stipulated in their strategic partnership. General Degeratu will meet the US Joint Chief of Staff general Shelton and his first deputy general Joseph Ralstone who has visited Romania last year along with US State Department officials and representatives of the Defence National University. Among other things, the Romanian official will visit US fighter plane and helicopter manufacturers and some US Air bases. RADOR, February 23

    [04] Welcome ceremony for Romanian soldiers coming back from Angola

    The welcome ceremony for the second group of Romanian soldiers coming back from Amgola was hosted by the "Calugareni" infantery batallion 2 headquarters in Bucharest. After eight and a half months of peace-keeping operations, the 61-soldier team was replaced by the 150-soldier "Bistrita" batallion 812. Lt col Gheorghe Dorofte, the commander of the Romanian task force in Angola, has informed that the arriving soldiers have ensured the defence of the UN and private proprieties as well as the free movement of UNITA and other Angolan Government officials. "The troops proved to be really professional, disciplined and dedicated", Mr Dorofte said. RADOR, February 23

    [05] President Constantinescu on the status of the SIDEX iron and steel plant

    The President's two day visit ended on Sunday afternoon with some meetings at the SIDEX iron and steel plant. "We began seeing the results of the efforts of the managers of SIDEX" - President Constantinescu said. "I've seen three variants of the restructuring programme. I thing there is a valid restructuring plan" Mr. Constantinescu said referring to this strategic objective. The Supreme Defence Council decided to consider separately these economic objectives that were important for Romania's national security and to pay special attention to them" - the head of the state said. He added: "The plant now has output, it has a market and a programme aimed at improving the output but it is still carries its debts to the state budget and to some autonomous state owned companyes". In his opinion, "the way the managing team tackled this problem (upgrading - e.n.) in cooperation with the State Property Fund (SOF) and with the competence ministries has shown that restructuring can mean more than a fashionable word but a real and serious process.     [06] Farmers in Dolj region will receive agriculture trading stamps

    The Post Service in the city of Craiova received over 1 million agriculture trading stamps and the distribution is due to start today. The farmers in the Dolj region have waited these stamps for a long time but the distribution was delayed many times. The Post Service has 1,100 employees and 300 offices ready for a quick distribution as farmers need these stamps for the spring works. Dolj is one of the greatest agriculture regions in Romania.
