[01] PRM - PUNR-Funar Wing Cooperation Protocol
A cooperation protocol between Greater Romania Party (PRM) and the Funar
wing of Romanians' National Unity Party (PUNR) was signed by its leaders,
Corneliu Vadim Tudor and Gheorghe Funar, at the PRM headquarters in
Bucharest. The document stipulates, among other things, that the two
parties should make joint efforts to dismiss the current Government and
form a new one, a Government of national unity. Under the same protocol,
both parties express their commitment to outlaw the Democratic Union of
Ethnic Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) and put an end to the distruction of
Romanian heritage and economy. PRM leader Corneliu Vadim Tudor said the
document is a first step to a future Great Alliance for the Revival of
Fatherland. RADOR, February 12
[02] Valeriu Tabara Says There Is Only One PUNR Party
The leader of the Romanians' National Unity Party (PUNR) has reminded
Corneliu Vadim Tudor, the leader of Greater Romania Party (PRM), that there
is only one party legally registered under the name of PUNR in Romanian
political life. In a communique, Mr Tabara wishes to stress that Gheorghe
Funar has lost his PUNR membership last November. "We mention that there is
no party or group under the name of PUNR-Funar in Romanian political life",
Mr Tabara says in his communique expressing at the same time his
willingness to start a friendly political dialogue with PRM representatives.

[03] ApR Angry about Statements of Adrian Nastase
The Vicepresident of the Alliance for Romania party (ApR), Marian Enache,
said that any possibility of achieving a Social-Democrat alliance is
hampered by the arogance and the insulting manner of the statements made by
Adrian Nastase, Vicepresident of the Party of Social Democracy in Romania
(PDSR). Mr Enache added that such statements are aimed at intimidating the
ApR party, but he expressed his hope that PDSR leader Ion Iliescu would
temper Adrian Nastase. Mr Enache has indicated that his party was ready to
start a civilised and open dialogue with PDSR if this party would promote a
more flexible policy. RADOR, February 12
[04] PNTCD - BNS Meeting
The governing Christian-Democrat National Peasant Party (PNTCD) and the
National Trade Union Block (BNS) have agreed on Wednesday to establish a
contact group aimed at improving their relations. After meeting the PNTCD
President Ion Diaconescu, BNS leader Dumitru Costin has announced that the
parties have agreed to intensify their dialogue in future. Participants
will include reform and privatisation experts as well as BNS leaders. Mr
Costin has stressed that the next meetings will try to find different
solutions aimed at covering both the reform and the restructuring of public
services and commercial companies. RADOR, February 12
[05] Negotiations between Government and Sanitas Federation Representatives
Have Failed
Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ciorbea met Sanitas trade unionists on
Wednesday. The meeting was aimed at discussing trade unions' demands, and
participants included Finance Minister Daniel Daianu, Labour Minister
Alexandru Athanasiu, Health Minister Ioan Bruckner and Sanitas leader
Marius Petcu. Mr Petcu said after the meeting that the Government can
ensure only a 25% raise in the salaries but it could try to find new
financial resources in the next two month, before the Law of the budget
will be approved. The Sanitas leader has warned that, in such conditions,
the conflict will reach its climax on Thursday, 10 AM, when a general
strike is to start. Mr Petcu added that he expects the strike to affect
every medical service throughout the country in the next few days. Trade
unionists would have wished to obtain an increase of their salaries between
25% and 100%. RADOR, February 12
[06] Light Industry Trade Unionists Ready for Strike
Trade unionists in the Romanian light industry have asked the Government to
cancel custom duties on cotton imports. During a press conference organised
at the CNSRL Fratia (Brotherhood) headquarters on Wednesday, trade union
leaders have indicated that such duties will lead the light industry to
bankruptcy and they warned they were ready for general strike if the
Government did not intend to change its decision. According to ROMPRES news
agency, the leader of Textila Bucegi trade union in Pucioasa said the
measure of imposing 58% custom duties/1 tonne of cotton was aimed at
increasing budget resources. RADOR, February 12
[07] New Pay System for State Financed Cultural Institutions
The Commission for culture, arts and media in the House of Deputies and
Labour Ministry representatives have discussed solutions for a new pay
system in state financed cultural institutions. Government representatives
presented a report on the basic principles of the system. They indicated
that the new regulations will insure a growing efficiency and real
management responsabilities. The commissioners fear the system could be
"overused" by those who grant credits. RADOR, February 12
[08] MAE Spokesman on Romania's Position Concerning the Iraqi Crisis
The US have already asked Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic to express
their support for a virtual military intervention in Iraq. In case Romania
was to answer a similar demand, Romanian Foreign Ministry spokesman Mihnea
Motoc wanted to stress that the US and Romania are engaged in consultations
concerning the strategic partnership which involves a closer cooperation in
many fields of common interest. Referring to the demand the US could make,
Mr Motoc said he could neither confirm nor deny such suppositions. In a
statement delivered to the press last week, the Romanian Foreign Ministry
(MAE) expressed its concern for recent developments in relations between
the UN and Irak. The ministry reiterated its position and said that the
only way to lift the UN sanctions on Iraq is to observe unconditionally the
UN Security Council resolutions. RADOR, February 12
[09] "The Personality: A Cultural Institution" - A Round Table Hosted by
the Romanian Cultural Centre in New York
In an interview with radio VOICE OF AMERICA, Coriolan Babeti, Director of
the Romanian Cultural Centre in New York, provided information concerning a
round table on "The Personality: A Cultural Institution" that his
institution has hosted recently. "It is important to say that, sometimes,
when crisis or dictatorship do happen, the personality is the one who
replaces institutions and leads the world further on", Mr Babeti said in
this context. Presidential adviser Zoe Petre, writer Dumitru Radu Popa,
director Andrei Serban and professor Dinu Gheto as well as American
