[01] BASES FOR WIDER COOPERATION BETWEEN MACEDONIA AND USA
A high level of friendship and trust has been achieved between the
Republic of Macedonia and the USA, which is a solid basis for widening
and deepening of the cooperation in many fields, especially
economy. This was concluded, according to Macedonian Television, at
yesterday's meeting in Ohrid of Macedonian President Kiro Gligorov
with US Ambassador to Macedonia Christopher Hill. The close and
harmonized stands of the two countries regarding the current situation
in the region were underlined, with a special attention paid to the
implementation of the Dayton Accord.
[02] MACEDONIAN-POLISH PARLIAMENTARIAN COOPERATION
President of Macedonian Parliament Tito Petkovski met yesterday in
Skopje with Education Minister of the Republic of Poland Jerzi Viatra,
and they exchanged opinions about the parliamentarian life in the two
countries. Expressing their pleasure with the cooperation between the
two Parliaments, they agreed that it should be further improved.
Minister Viatra was received by Macedonian Prime minister Branko
Crvenkovski also, and the two officials expressed their satisfaction
with the cooperation in education so far.
[03] TRADITIONAL MACEDONIAN-FRENCH FRIENDSHIP
'France was the first EU country that opened an Embassy in Macedonia,
and the very first one to make such a step as the opening of the
French Consulate in Bitola,' Macedonian Parliament President Tito
Petkovski said at yesterday's meeting with the French Ambassador to
Macedonia Jacques Huntzinger, as Macedonian Television
reported. President Petkovski referred to the traditional friendship
of the two countries and nations, as well as to the French
understanding of Macedonian problems in the period of obtaining
independence and carrying out of political and economic reforms. Both
officials concluded that bilateral relations should still be improved,
especially in the field of economy. Ambassador Huntzinger yesterday
had a meeting also with Macedonian Minister of Finances Taki Fiti.
[04] DIPLOMATIC OFFICES - A STEP FORWARD IN FRY-MACEDONIAN RELATIONS
Macedonian President of Parliament Tito Petkovski yesterday received
the newly appointed plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Republic of
Macedonia to FR Yugoslavia Slavko Milosavlevski. Local media reported
that they had emphasized the need for relations between Macedonia and
FRY to be improved. At the meeting Ambassador Milosavlevski had with
Prime Minister Branko Crvenkovski, belief that the opening of
Macedonian Embassy in Belgrade would be an important step forward in
FRY-Macedonian relations was expressed. The need for the relations to
be regulated as quick as possible was also underlined. 'Makfax'
agency reported that Radomir Bogdanovic, an Ambassador in the Yugoslav
Foreign Ministry, had been appointed a President of the Yugoslav part
of the Diplomatic-Expert Commission for Normalization of Relations
between Belgrade and Skopje. As alleged, the other members had also
been appointed. Macedonian party had also appointed the members of its
Commission, and regulation of the open issues between the two
countries is expected to take place soon.
[05] AGREEMENTS ON ECONOMIC COOPERATION WITH SLOVENIA NEEDED
During his private stay in Slovenia these days, Macedonian Foreign
Minister Ljubomir Frchkovski had met with his Slovenian counterpart
Davorin Krachun, Macedonian Radio reported. They discussed the
bilateral relations, underlying the necessity for agreements on
economy to be signed as soon as possible. The Agreement on avoiding
of double taxation was pointed out as one of greatest priority in that
context. As Macedonian Radio reported, Slovenian Minister said his
country was determined to support efforts of Macedonia for becoming a
part time member of UN Security Council and a full one of CEFTA. The
identical stands of both countries on the succession of the former
Federation had also been confirmed during the talks, and it was
stressed that economic bilateral cooperation was far behind the
political one.
[06] TALKS ON INVESTMENTS IN MACEDONIA
Promotion of investing in Macedonia and the need for systematic
regulation of the property ownership were the subject of yesterday's
talks between Macedonian Minister of Development Abdulmenaf Bedzeti
and German Ambassador to Macedonia Claus Schramaer, local media
reported. In context of bilateral relations, it was said that German
investments in Macedonia should be increased.
[07] SPASOV: 'MACEDONIAN NATION AND LANGUAGE ARE A POLITICAL REALITY'
'With its policy in the Balkans, Macedonia has shown that compromises
can maintain good relations with the neighbouring countries,'
Macedonian Ambassador to Bulgaria Gjorgji Spasov stated for Bulgarian
paper 'Standard'. Macedonian Television reported that in context of
the open issues which are complicating Bulgarian-Macedonian relations,
the Ambassador had stressed the bilateral agreements that are waiting
to be signed. 'Bulgarian politicians do not accept the Agreements to
be signed in Bulgarian and in Macedonian language, but are suggesting
a formulation 'in official languages of the two countries,' said
Spasov. He stated that, therefore, 'Bulgarian politicians should
understand that Macedonian nation and language are not a political
issue in the Balkans now, but a political reality'.
[08] BTA: '300 MACEDONIANS ENTERED BULGARIA BY FORCE'
'Bulgarian police had to use force to stop 300 Macedonians, who tried
to knock down the fence at the border crossing Deve Bair-Gjueshevo and
enter into Bulgarian territory,' Bulgarian Police representative Emil
Metodiev said, according to Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA). The
information which was reported by BBC said this had happened on August
20, after which the citizens were still allowed to enter
Bulgaria. Metodiev said the Macedonians had been pushing trying to
cross the border, which complicated the passports
procedure. Macedonians citizens, on the other hand, claimed that
Bulgarian customs officers were deliberately delaying the
procedure. As alleged, the several hours waiting could be avoided if
DM 10 were paid to the officers. BBC information, reported by
'Dnevnik', said that Bulgarian citizens had complained about being
equally treated by Macedonian customs officers. Macedonian Embassy in
Sofia had found out about this incident from the media, and has still
not been officially informed by Bulgarian Customs Administration.
[09] WB CREDIT FOR MACEDONIAN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY
World Bank for Reconstruction and Development from Washington recently
informed Macedonian Electrical Industry that it would be given a
credit of $ 35 million for realisation of three projects in the
country. 'Nova Makedonija' reports that the projects are:
revitalization of water power stations, for which $ 20 million will be
given; finishing the construction of Macedonian Dispatching Centre,
for which about $ 20 million would be spent; and the first phase of
revitalization of electricity distribution nets on the territory of
whole Macedonia, which will cost $ 5 million. The paper also reads
that the World Bank had approved irretrievable $ 600,000 to Macedonia,
which will be provided by the Japanese Government. They will be used
for two studies on the development of electricity system in Macedonia
till the year of 2020, as well as for a feasibility study for a
complete revitalization of water power stations.
[10] STATISTICS ON MACEDONIAN SALARY
Average net salary per worker in the Republic of Macedonia in June
1996 was, according to Statistics Institute, 8,762 denars. Average net
salary in production was 8,022 denars, while in non-production it was
9,379 denars. 20.5% of the workers did not receive their salaries in
June at all.
[11] UNJUST ACCUSATIONS OF THE HEAD OF MACEDONIAN CHURCH
'We consider the statement of the Head of Macedonian Orthodox Church
Archbishop Mihail an insulting one, as the stands of the World
Macedonian Congress regarding the Macedonian state, nation, its
identity and national interests, as well as the Macedonian Orthodox
Church, are almost identical to ours,' said an announcement of the
Australian-Macedonian Council in Sidney. Daily 'Dnevnik' reported that
the announcement was a reply to 'the accusations of the Head of
Macedonian Orthodox Church, who said the World Macedonian Congress was
an enemy of the Macedonian state, nation and Church'.
[12] COMPLAINTS OF 'TETOVO UNIVERSITY' ACTIVISTS REJECTED
Appellate Court in Skopje recently rejected the complaint of Nevzat
Halili, a former President of PDP, and a current one of the Republican
Party for National Unity, who was charged with illegal activities
about the 'Tetovo university'. He asked for his sentence of one year
imprisonment to be delayed once again, although it was already done
once by the Municipal Court in Tetovo. Macedonian media reported that
the Appellate Court had rejected Halili's explanation that he was
unable to serve his sentence due to health problems. The complaint of
Musli Halimi for his sentence of three months imprisonment (charged
for similar activities as Halili) was also rejected, as he had
supported it with the same explanation (moving out) as previously.
[13] STRUGA POETRY EVENINGS OFFICIALLY OPENED
The 35th Struga Poetry Evenings were officially opened yesterday
evening in Struga with lighting the Festival fire and reading of
Konstantin Mildinov's poem 'T'ga za jug'. The 'Poetry meridians' took
place at the Poetry Hall, and all the participants had their
performances on it. The event was greeted by the President of Struga
Poetry Evenings Council Paskal Gilevski and by the French poet Lionel
Rey. Before that, this year's winner of the 'Golden Wreath', Japanese
poet Makoto Ooka, planted a tree at the Poetry Park, and deputy
Minister of Culture Borko Zafirovski unveiled the monument of the
Russian poet Sergei Esenin.
[14] 'Chance for 34 Political Parties'

... According to the evidence of the Appellate Court in Skopje,
participation in the forthcoming local elections is a reality for 34
political parties. The Law on Political Parties obliges them to renew
their registration at the end of each year. They should prove that the
party has a minimum number of 500 members, with the right to vote,
adult citizens of the Republic of Macedonia. Since the end of last
year, only three new parties have been registered, and the total
number of parties is now 34. The most recently registered one (on 26
June) is the Macedonian Uniting Party, which President is Branko
Sinadinovski. He was a candidate of VMRO-DPMNE on the additional
elections for Skopje electoral unit nb.103. Mid March this year the
Macedonian Alliance was registered. Its President is Gorgija (George)
Atanasovski, who was a Presidential candidate on last elections, and a
current President of World Macedonian Congress branch in America.
Previously, at the beginning of March, the Macedonian Christian Party
was registered, which President is Miroslav Todorov.
Some of the earliest registered parties are: the National Democratic
Party - NDP, seated in Tetovo, with Ilijaz Halimi for a President;
Social Democratic Party - President Aleksandar Donev; Party for
Democratic Prosperity - PDP, seated in Tetovo, President Abdurahman
Aliti; MAAK - Conservative Party, registered President Ante Popovski,
although Strasho Angelovski is its current leader, while the other
branch of this party, led by Jagnula Kunovska is involved in a court
procedure to prove the legitimacy and continuity of the previous
party. The list continues as following: Macedonian National Party -
Vladimir Stefanovski; Social Democratic Alliance of Macedonia (SDSM) -
Branko Crvenkovski; Democratic Party of Turks - Erdogan Sarach;
VMRO-Democratic Party for Macedonian National Unity (DPMNE) - Ljupcho
Georgievski; Labour Party - Krste Jankovski; Party for Total
Emancipation of Romans-PCERM - Faik Abdi;
Socialist Party of Macedonia - late Kiro Popovski is still registered
as a President, although Ljubisav Ivanov has been meanwhile elected
for a new President; Liberal Party of Macedonia - Stojan Andov;
VMRO-Democratic Party - Vladimir Golubovski; Citizens Liberal Party of
Macedonia - Boris Gegaj; Party for Democratic Action-True Way, seated
in Tetovo - Kenan Mazlimi; Party for Democratic Movement of Egyptians
in Macedonia, seated in Struga - Sinan Naser; Democratic Progressive
Party of Romans in Macedonia - Ali Bekir; Democratic Party of Serbs in
Macedonia - Dragisha Miletic; Party for Democratic Action of Macedonia
- Avdija Pepic; Democratic Party of Macedonia (DPM), seated in Tetovo
- Tomislav Stojanovski; Albanian Democratic Alliance-Liberal Party -
Dzemilj Idrizi; Communist Party of Macedonia - Todor Pelivanov;
Alliance of Communists of Macedonia - Milan Panchevski; Macedonian
National Front, seated in Prilep - Ivan Spirkovski; Democratic Party -
Petar Goshev; VMRO- Fatherland Party, seated in Bitola - Dimitar
Crnomarov; VMRO-Macedonian National Democratic Union - Tomislav
Stefkovski; Party for Democratic Prosperity (PDP)-Party for National
Union in Macedonia - Nevzat Halili. This party has unofficially
changed its name into Republican Party for National Unity, but has
still not been registered as such.
There are several parties, which had been registered before and after
the elections in 1994: Party for Democratic Prosperity of Albanians in
Macedonia (PDPA), seated in Tetovo - Arben Dzaferi; Party for
Democratic Action- Citizens' Union - Sadrija Hasanovic; and Democratic
Party for Full Emancipation of Romans (Democratic PCERM), seated in
Kumanovo - Sevdzan Suleimanovski. Although the number of 34 parties
is not small, it is not final. There is enough time for other parties
to be registered before the local elections, and we found out that
there were people interested in that.
