[01] MACEDONIA SUGGESTS IFOR TO BE DISSUADING FORCES IN THE REGION

Macedonian Defense Minister Blagoj Handziski, at the meeting of North Atlantic Alliance in Brussels, presented the suggestion of Macedonia to make part of IFOR forces dissuading forces, in order to prevent a new Balkan war. He said IFOR troops, currently disposed in Bosnia, should stay after December and be disposed in several countries in the region.

According to 'Makpress' agency, Minister Handziski stressed that Macedonia would be directly affected by an eventual unsuccessful end of IFOR Peace Mission. He also warned that any postponing of elections in Bosnia could return the previous actors on the stage, who might re-start the war.

The most severe clashes would, according to Handziski, this time be situated at the regions of Sandzak and Kosovo.

The official opening of the Macedonian Liaison Office at NATO headquarters on Friday was attended by NATO Secretary- General Javier Solana.

Minister Handziski had meetings with his counterparts from USA, Sweden, Finland, Bulgaria, Albania, Romania, Holland and Belgium.

[02] ATHENS: COMPROMISE FOR THE NAME OPENLY REJECTED BY MACEDONIA

Reporting parts of the interview of Macedonian President Gligorov for Belgrade weekly 'Vreme', many Athens media considered that he had sent a clear message to Greece that Macedonia would not accept any compromise on the name, read yesterday's issue of 'Nova Makedonija'. Greek agency 'ANA' cited Gligorov's statement that changing the Constitutional name of the country could result in a great ethic and psychological problem among Macedonians. 'ANA' also cited his saying that the irrational requests to change the name of the country could wake up the old and well-known conflicts between Macedonia and neighbouring countries with severe consequences.

In context of this, but also regarding political relations inside Greece, the party Political Spring member Nikos Martakis said the Greek government, frightened from the forthcoming congress of PASOK, had postponed allowing to Skopje to use the name 'Macedonia' for the autumn. According to Martakis, 'Skopjans' had been misusing the name 'Macedonia' for the last 50 years' and he required from his government to be more engaged in returning the rights 'that had belonged to Greece for the last two and a half thousand years'.

'Nova Makedonija' reported the estimations of many Greek papers that no progress was expected to be made in Macedonian-Greek talks in New York, due to the firm stand of Skopje.

[03] 'SRPSKA REC': NO AGREEMENT FOR THE PLANNED YUGOSLAV AMBASSADOR TO MACEDONIA

'Srpska Rec', paper of Serbian opposition party Serbian Regeneration Movement (SPO), which leader is Vuk Drashkovic, read recently that Macedonian President Gligorov would not give an agr, ment to Zoran Janachkovic as a FR Yugoslav Ambassador to Macedonia, because he used to be the front-man of Serbian Security Service. As Sitel Television reported, SPO claimed this information had been obtained from sources close to Macedonian government.

According to 'Srpska Rec', a FR Yugoslav Embassy in Skopje with Janachkovic as its Head would be, in fact, one of the most powerful secret service office in the Balkans, which must not be allowed. The paper concluded that having Janachkovic appointed to this position might seriously jeopardize the process of normalization of relations between Skopje and Belgrade.

[04] 'NASA BORBA': MORE PEOPLE RADIATED BY SMUGGLED RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL

Belgrade daily 'Nasa Borba' reported that the radioactive material found in a container at Macedonian-FR Yugoslav border recently was 85g of 'cobalt 60' isotope, used in medicine and industry, which had radiated 750 times more than when used normally. As Macedonian daily 'Vecer' cited the article of 'Nasa Borba', the investigation showed that there had been an attempt for this radioactive material to be smuggled with 'Nis-Express' bus, which runs on the Skopje to Subotica line. It seems that the smuggler, afraid from being revealed, had thrown away the metal box with the radioactive material in the container on the territory between the borders. According to 'Nasa Borba', all the 52 passengers of the bus and other persons who came in contact with the container are most probably radiated. Also, the Medical Centre officials in Vranje had confirmed that potentially radiated persons had been under constant medical control.

[05] RUGOVA: NO PEACE WITHOUT SOLVING KOSOVO ISSUE

Leader of Kosovo Albanians Ibrahim Rugova said these days that if the Kosovo issue was not solved, there would be no peace in the region. A-1 Television reported Rugova's statement that Kosovo was in the centre of world factors' attention, especially after Dayton Peace Accord had been signed. He said Kosovo Albanians were continuing to ask Serbian-Albanian problem to be solved through negotiations mediated by a third party. According to Rugova, Albanians were asking for a third party to be involved due to many bitter experiences they had had in the past. He said the third party would, in fact, guarantee the negotiations results.
