    [01] PRESIDENT GLIGOROV URGES ECONOMY TO GO AHEAD

    At the traditional formal reception for businessmen in the Macedonian Parliament, last Friday, President Kiro Gligorov sent out the message "More than ever, Macedonia needs it economy to be united and to create conditions for it to go ahead. I hope you will do everything so that we can say at the end of the year that things are slowly starting to improve and that finally, we have moved from the ground. We should learn from this meeting that good times are nevertheless ahead," Gligorov said, addressing the businessmen.

    The stability of the national currency and curbing the inflation were the two points Gligorov underlined as key conditions in leading the economic policy. "We can easily stand side by side with some highly developed European countries on these two issues." However, the emphasized the need to employ more people, to enhance the exchange with the world and to be persistent in finding and being present on new markets, as three priorities in the time to come.

    According to Gligorov, the Government should carry on with its implementation of new laws, with the purpose of rounding off the market ambience in the country, adding that a lot has already been done on this plan. "That is necessary," Gligorov said, "in order to encourage the freedom of initiative of the people and the businessmen. This way, in the long run, the sustenance of the state for the normal performance of its obligations, will go much more smoothly. Those two matters should be linked with one another - the freedom of initiative and the raising of our consciousness for the survival of this state," Gligorov underlined.

    On behalf of the Macedonian businessmen, the president of the Macedonian Chamber of Commerce Dushan Petreski stressed that every economy should be lucky to have a president that constantly things of it. According to Petreski, now is the chance, by taking advantage of the economic potentials, seeing we have already survived the period of the two blockades, to push forward. However, in his opinion, in order to achieve that, "it is necessary to criticize a lot less, and to work together a lot more."

    [02] CONSULTATIONS ON NORMALIZATION OF RELATIONS WITH FRY

    Representatives of the Macedonian Foreign Ministry and the FRY Foreign Ministry held preliminary consultations in Skopje yesterday. The talks focused on the normalization of relations between the two countries, as well as continuation of the cooperation in certain fields of joint interest. It has been agreed that the talks continue in Belgrade soon, the Macedonian Foreign Ministry announced.

    Calling upon sources in Belgrade, Makfaks reports that Rodoljub Etinski, legal adviser in the FRY Foreign Ministry and Dragan Vucicevich, ambassador in the same ministry, stayed in Skopje in order to continue the talks on the normalization of the relations, initiated with the talks Milosevich-Gligorov, in Belgrade, in October last year, and the contacts during the signing of the peace accord for Bosnia in Paris. In the meantime, the director of the Montenegrin PTT, Jusuf Petakovich denied in the newspaper "Nasa Borba" that he had been offered an ambassadorial position in Skopje. Calling upon sources close to the ruling Montenegrin party, the newspaper wrote yesterday that Podgorica is interested in the position of the next Montenegrin ambassador to Macedonia, however, assessing that Serbia will not surrender it that easily. This detail, as Makfaks reports, supports the unofficial information that Zoran Janackovich, presently chief of security with the FRY Foreign Ministry, could very well be the first ambassador of FRY to Macedonia.

    [03] MACEDONIAN DELEGATION IN BELGRADE

    A delegation from the Macedonian Foreign Ministry, led by Assistant Minister Ognen Maleski left for Belgrade today, to hold talks with representatives of the FRY Federal Foreign Ministry.

    The talks are in the function of continuing the preliminary consultations on the normalization of the relations between the two countries, as well as the continuation of the cooperation in certain fields of mutual interest, the Information Service of the Macedonian Foreign Ministry announced.

    [04] KEEPING THE PEACE IN MACEDONIA AND KOSOVO

    On Friday, at his request, the acting U.S. ambassador Victor Comras paid a visit to PDP headquarters in Tetovo. At the meeting with the president of the party Abdurahman Aliti and Bekjir Zhuta, Minister of Development, the focal point of the discussion was the situation in the Balkans, following the peace accord for Bosnia, the situation in Macedonia and the misunderstandings in the coalition Government, the PDP Information Service announced.

    Ambassador Comras emphasized the efforts of the U.S. to put an end to the war in former Yugoslavia and to start implementing the Dayton peace plan. He stressed the interest of the U.S. Government to keep the stability and peace in Macedonia and Kosovo, emphasizing the contribution of the PDP, which, according to the assessments of the U.S. State Department, led a national policy with respect of the interests of all nations, especially the interests of the state in general.

    [05] AMDI BAJRAM FROM PCERM NEW MEP

    According to unofficial data, Amdi Bajram from PCERM (Party for the Full Emancipation of the Romanies of Macedonia) has been elected the new representative to Parliament, following yesterday's additional elections in the Skopje election unit 114. Bajram won 13 votes more than the candidate from the Alliance for Macedonia Vasil Drvosanov. More than 62% of the voters came out to vote in the polling station in the local community Dane Krapchev, which exceeded the expectations of the State Election Commission, seeing this is the third time the election is repeated.

    [06] INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON BALKANS IN GOSTIVAR

    Associates of the International Commission on the Balkans stayed in Gostivar on Sunday for talks with the political parties VMRO-DPMNE, MAAK, PDP and the Human Rights Forum. In November last year, these associates (Alan Dana - U.S.A. and Stefan Trebot - Germany), as well as the member of the International Commission from England John Roper, stayed in Tetovo and Skopje. This visit is a continuation of the research in the regions of Western Macedonia on possible conflicts between the Macedonians and Albanians. During the talks, an emphasis was placed on the problems with which these two identities are faced, and which are manifested through the sphere of economy, health, education, culture and sports. The problems that arise among the population of various national and religious affiliation in the Gostivar township, the intolerance and inter-ethnic conflicts, were underlined as particularly important.

    The Commission is expected to issue a report on this theme by the end of June, this year. The same will be sent to the governments in Europe and Northern America, with a proposal as to ways of achieving regional stability.

    [07] MACEDONIA MEMBER OF ASSOCIATION ON MOBILE TELEPHONY

    At the 33rd regular session of the Association on mobile telephony, which was held in Rome from January 17 to 19, the public enterprise for PTT traffic "Makedonija" became a member of this organization, with acclamation. The members of this organization are all operators who have a network for mobile telephony, built according to the GSM system, which number 160.

    PTT "Makedonija's" membership in this organization, as an operator, enables the realization of the project for building a network for mobile telephony in Macedonia. According to the decision of PTT "Makedonija," the mobile telephony will be with a capacity of 25,000 subscribers, with a possibility of expanding up to 50,000 and even more.

    [08] FIRST EXAMINATIONS FOR BROKERS IN MACEDONIA

    According to the results of the first examination for brokers in Macedonia, 71 of them have passed the two compulsory tests, thereby obtaining a domestic brokers' licence, while 54 of them passed the third test as well, obtaining an international brokers' licence.

    The tests are checked by British consultants, sponsored by the British Know-How Fund, which has taken part in the process of formation of the Macedonia Stock Exchange from the very start.

    Initially, it was planned to open the Stock Exchange in November, last year, then January, this year, however, now the date has been moved to the first quarter of this year.
