[02] Kosovar Human Rights Group Registers 10194 Cases of Serb Regime Brutalities in One Year

PRISHTINA, Jan 14 (KIC) - 35 Kosova Albanians were either shot dead or died violently during last year, the Prishtina-based Council for the Defense of Human Rights and Freedoms (CDHRF) said in annual (1997) report issued earlier this week.

In a comprehensive account the major Kosova human rights group has provided details related to the death of all 35 persons. 5 Albanians died of Serb police tortures, 11 were shot dead by Serb police or army, 1 was stabbed by a Serb civilian, while 18 others were killed in unsolved circumstances, the report said.

The CDHRF report said it has registered 10194 cases of human rights abuses committed by the Serb regime and police during 1997 alone, including the killing of Albanians, torture, arbitrary arrest and detention, household raids, hostage taking of Albanians, intrusion of police into institutions of Albanians, forceful eviction of Albanians from their apartments, etc.

During the last year as many as 1073 persons were arbitrarily arrested, of whom 125 were later convicted to short or long imprisonment, 803 were summoned to report at the Serb police stations, 480 were held to the so- called 'informative conversation" in the police stations, 427 Albanians had their household raided on by Serb forces, 207 Albanians were threatened in by the police, 5 Albanian were take hostage, 3 Albanian were kidnapped by Serb forces, etc.

The report noted that in three trials at Serb-run court in Prishtina 55 Albanians were sentenced to a combined 557 years of imprisonment, their sentences ranging from 1 to 20 years. The Council underlined that the Serb court authorities committed gross procedural violations and that the accused Albanians were sentences in fraudulent trials, as the court could never corroborate the charges against them.

The Human Rights Council has provide numerous other illustrative examples of the Serb regime brutalities against Kosovar Albanians.

[03] Vice-President of Kosova Academy, Muslim Mulliqi, Dies

PRISHTINA, Jan 14 (KIC) - Muslim Mulliqi, Vice-President of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosova, died at the age of 63 in Prishtina on Tuesday.

Muslim Mulliqi has exhibited in dozens of European capitals and was honoured with numerous domestic and international awards.

[04] Serbs Pressurize His Albanian Neighbor to Abandon Apartment

PRISHTINA, Jan 14 (KIC) - On 11 January, four Serbian kids drew a cross and wrote four "s" letters (4-"s" stand for Only Unity Saves the Serbs) on the apartment door of Hysni Syla, at Ibri neighborhood of Mitrovica, LDK sources reported.

The report says that Syla's family is the only Albanian family residing in the apartment building.

Not long ago the Serb kids beat up severely his seven-year-old son, for no reason.

Sula family complains that all the pressure exerted against him has but one purpose. They do not want an Albanian family in the neighborhood.
