  • [01] Kosova is Main Condition for Keeping Outer Wall of Sanctions on Belgrade, U.S. Diplomat Says

PRISHTINA, Jan 7 (KIC) - Kosova is one of the main conditions for maintaining the outer wall of sanctions on Serb and Montenegrin Federation, Robert Gelbard, President Clinton's envoy to the Balkans has told the press on Tuesday.

The Serbian-language TV program of the Voice of America said Tuesday evening that during a press conference in Washington Ambassador Robert Gelbard said that in a meeting he expects to have soon with President Milosevic in Belgrade the Kosova issue will be one of the major topics of the discussion.

The U.S diplomat praised the creativity of the students of the Prishtina University in their peaceful protest held on 30 December.

Asked about the so-called Liberation Army of Kosova (U^K), the VOA quoted Mr. Gelbard as responding that if it [U^K] continues with actions the United States will identify it as a terrorist organization.

[02] French Intellectuals Deplore Serb Regime Oppression of Kosovar Albanians

PRISHTINA, Jan 7 (KIC) - Over 50 distinguished French intellectuals have signed a petition sympathizing with the predicament of the Kosovar Albanians whose rights have been brutally abused by the Serbian regime, Bujku newspaper reported.

Under the title "A Call to French Intellectuals for Support of Albanians in Kosova", the prestigious "Le Monde" has recently carried the petition of French intellectuals, amongst them Edgar Moren (sp), Paul Gard (sp). Offering support to students and teachers of the Prishtina University who protested peacefully in Kosova's capital Prishtina and half a dozen other towns in end- December, the petition says that 'French universities, teachers and associates, students and intellectuals cannot stay idle if an entire people who has demonstrated exemplary patience and prudence is subjected to humiliation', Bujku said.

[03] PPK to Participate in Kosovar Presidential and Parliamentary Elections

PRISHTINA, Jan 7 (KIC) - The Parliamentary Party of Kosova (PPK) will take part in the parliamentary and presidential elections in Kosova due for March 22, the Prishtina-based Bujku quoted a PPK official as saying.

Dr. Rifat Blaku, vice-chairman of the PPK has told the Albanian section of the Deutsche Welle radio that in the party meetings held these days, it was decided that PPK will participate in the elections. The radio has quoted sources in the PPK as saying that the party leadership has discussed the possibilities having Adem Dema^i, PPK leader run for the President of the Republic.

On 24 December 1997, the President of the Republic of Kosova Dr. Ibrahim Rugova announced presidential and parliamentary elections to be held on 22 March 1998. The same day, the PPK vice-chairman Jonuz Salihaj told the press that his party did not approve of the mode of the announcement of new elections. The outgoing legislature of the Parliament should have first met and elected a Speaker, who would call the new elections, he said.

The first multiparty elections for the Parliament and President of the Republic of Kosova were held on May 24, 1992. The Democratic League of Kosova (LDK) won most seats, and its leader Dr. Ibrahim Rugova was elected the first President of the Republic.

Parliamentary elections have been put off twice, while presidential ones for six months.

[04] Over 80 Thousand Appeals of Albanian Workers Pending Court Deliberation

PRISHTINA, Jan 7 (KIC) - The Serb workers of the "Lipjan Prevoz" bus company in Lipjan (formerly "Kosovatrans"), have threatened that in case the Serbian Court does not abrogate its decision for a return of 134 Albanian employees to work, they will prevent them from returning themselves, Agim Hajrizi chairman of the Independent Kosova Trade Unions said in a press conference Wednesday.

The 134 Albanians were dismissed in July 1991, following the introduction of coercive measures in Lipjan bus company by the Serb regime. The Albanian workers laid an appeal with Serb-run Court, and the latter decided to returned them to work.

Yet, the Serbian workers who are currently working in the Lipjan bus company said if the Serb Court does not reconsider its decision they will themselves prevent the Albanian workers from returning to their workplace.

Mr. Hajrizi said also that at least 80 thousand appeals, laid by Albanian workers dismissed following the Serb regime crack down on Kosova in 1989, are pending court deliberation.
