  • [01] DEMIREL IN SARAJEVO

Sarajevo, June 17, 1996 (Press TWRA)

Turkish President Sulejman Demirel arrived today to Sarajevo for a two-day visit to BH, during which he is supposed to pay visit also to Zenica and Mostar. During the talks with BH President Alija Izetbegovic, Demirel confirmed his country would actively assist in training of BH Federation armed forces after which both Presidents signed the agreement by which Turkish government defined a reconstruction - credit of 20 million $ as the unreturnable grant to BH. On a press-conference held after the talks with President Izetbegovic, Demirel pointed out that the implementation of Dayton peace-accord is the most important task, adding that international military forces should not leave the country for as long as a constant and stable peace has not yet been installed. Turkish President said he would also discuss this issue with Croatian President Tudjman with whom he should meet on Wednesday. He announced they would discuss the Mostar elections in which Demirel pointed out the importance of Croatia for the implementation of a long-lasting peace in BH." "I believe the elections in Mostar as well as those scheduled for September will be successful besides all the obstacles that still should be removed", Demirel concluded. He also called international community to made additional efforts in order to ensure a fast reconstruction of BH. Izetbegovic pointed out BH authority will continue in a future period, as well, to annul, by political means and in a peaceful way, many imperfections of the Dayton accord. (end) M.S.

    [02] INCIDENT IN MOSTAR

Mostar, June 17, 1996 (Press TWRA)

A group of Bosniaks stoned this morning a Franciscan monastery in Mostar, causing a considerable material damage. This monastery is situated in Western Mostar, in the very vicinity of Bulevar - former line of conflicts between Bosniaks and Croats in this town. According to the Mostar police report, Bosniak police arrested five instigators and informed EU police in Mostar about the incident. (end) M.S.

    [03] SERBIA REJECTS NATO

Belgrade, June 17, 1996 (Press TWRA)

HQ Commander, Gen. Momcilo Perisic stated, on the occasion of Yugoslav Army Day that "all peoples are objectively threatened in former Yugoslavia, esp. Serbs and all alleged concerns about threatening of other nations by Serbs are artificial, aiming to realize well-known objectives". He rejected a possibility of "FRY" joining the NATO "Partnership for peace" program for, according to his words, Serbia and Montenegro did not consider joining the tabor of "temporarily more powerful and aggressive". Serbian President Milosevic did not participate to this manifestation and commentators explain it with his recent decision to invest in police and not in army. (end) M.S.

[04] WITNESSES DID NOT RECOGNIZE LAJIC

The Hague, June 17, 1996 (Press TWRA)

The Hague Court should decide on Prosecutor proposal to suspend indictment against Bosnian Serb Goran Lajic, charged with the crimes committed in the camp of Keraterm. Namely, it can not be proven Lajic is the person against whom has been raised the charge, for nine of the witnesses did not recognize him on the photographs presented during the hearing. (end) M.S.

    [05] RECONSTRUCTION OF "HERZEG-BOSNIA" GOVERNMENT

Sarajevo, June 18, 1996 (Press TWRA)

Following the nomination of Vladimir Soljic, BH Federation Minister of defense as Minister of defense in "Herzeg-Bosnia", BH Federation Ministry of defense gave a following statement: "Nomination of Mr. Vladimir Soljic as Minister of defense in so- called Herzeg-Bosnia government clearly confirms that Croatian side is violating the Dayton accord and that BH Federation para- state institutions have continued their activity. This can not, in any way, encourage the process of installing of the federal defense institutions and justify doubt in readiness of the Croatian side to sincerely form a joint army and BH Federation Ministry of defense. Such an act, as well as all the other efforts in preserving para-state, exclusively Croatian defense system, prevent the process of installing of joint federal defense institutions and Law on defense." Bozo Rajic, President of HDZ BH, gave a following comment of the reconstruction of "Herzeg Bosnia" government: "It is logical when you have the army, as a special component, to have Ministry of defense, as well as all the other, additional bodies of the Ministry. For the security reason, we should also possess Ministry of Internal, Ministry of justice and Ministry of finance, controlling everything." Bildt's Office spokesman, C. Murphy, criticized yesterday, on a press-conference held in Sarajevo, the reconstruction of "Herzeg- Bosnia" government, pointing out that it was an illegal act. "UN High representative considers this government as illegal and unacceptable according to the Dayton accord. It represents a challenge to the peace-accord, regarding the moment when it was made and Ministers who are its members", Murphy said. He also announced Bildt's office would request the federal administration bodies to prevent such acts and ensure respecting of the Dayton accord. (end) M.S.

[06] SILAJDZIC - "BOSNIA IS SINKING DEEPER AND DEEPER"

Sarajevo, June 18, 1996 (Press TWRA)

President of Party for BH, dr. Haris Silajdzic, gave an interview to the local Sarajevo station TV 99, commenting the attack upon him and his assistants in Cazin: "This was a group of extremists who want to divide Bosnia and establish an absolute authority in one part of Bosnia. How it looks like, You may see yourselves and that is why it is necessary that BH citizens become aware of these groups that want to take use of our victims and suffering in order to have an absolute authority in this part of Bosnia. BH citizens must say "no" to this option", Silajdzic said, adding that, according to his opinion, Bosnia is sinking deeper and deeper. Zaim Backovic, member of Party for BH leadership, stated on yesterday's press conference in Sarajevo that members of the Party think this incident was organized by Muslim youth association (MOS) that functions within SDA. BH Federation Ministry of defense informs that members of the Station for public security in Cazin formed, by their bodies, a wall around dr. Silajdzic and tried to make him exit on additional door, in which seven members of police were injured. A special unit of BH Ministry of Internal arrived to Bihac in order to investigate the case. According to our correspondent's report from Sarajevo, statements regarding this incident differ very much, for some of them even mention that Party for BH provoked this incident in Cazin. (end) M.S.
