It was founded in 1537 by Gazi Husrevbeg, the Turkish governor of Bosnia. The Library contains about 50,000 volumes, 25,000 are books written in European languages, 10,000 are printed oriental books, and about ten thousand are manuscripts. These manuscripts deal with various domains of science and Arabic, Turkish, and Persian literatures. Among them there is a large number of manuscripts written by Bosnian writers who wrote in Oriental languages. The Library also possesses about 80 sidzils (court records) dating from the the 16th to the 19th century, and about 4,000 historical documents, and 400 waqfnamas. In addition, the Library includes complete annual of periodicals and weeklies, rich collection of photographs etc. Thus, the Library has a great importance in regard to cultural history of Bosnia and Herzegovina.The Library publishes the catalogues of its manuscripts and the annual Anali. Three volumes of the Catalogue were published until now. Another three volumes are prepared for printing too, but lack of financial support delayed their publishing. The latest book of the journal ' Anali Gazihusrevbegove biblioteke' (vols. XIV and XV) was published in 1990. At the beginning of the war (Spring 1992) all book collections were transferred from the Library to various safe places. Thus this Library saved its entire bookstock.
