  • [01] Czech President and Saint Father wish Albanian President on the occasion of National Feast

    Tirana, November 30 (ATA) - Czech President Vacllav Havel sent a greeting telegram to Albanian President Rexhep Meidani on the occasion of the National Feast.

    In this greetings telegram the Czech President estimated the continuous attempts of Albanian President Meidani on the development of the democracy in Albania and establishment of the stability in Balkan region.He hoped that "the relations between the two our countries will be improved for the best of the two sides".

    Albanian President Meidani received a greeting telegram on the occasion of the National Feast by Saint Father Papa Gjon Pali II.

    Saint Father sent the warmest greetings to Albanian People on the joyful occasion of the national day of Albania."I am praying to Almighty God for more blessings and harmony, development and peace all over the country", wrote Saint Father in the greeting telegram sent to Albanian President Meidani.

    On the occasion of the National Feast President Meidani received greetings telegrams from King of Spain Huan Karlos, President of Finland Marti Ahtisari, President of Syria Hafez Al Hasaf, King of Jordania Abdulla and many others. /lh/linda/

    Tirana, November 30 (ata) - By Dorian Koca - Referring to the stock market of Tirana, dollar gains points against the lek on Tuesday morning if compared with the value marked on Monday. A dollar is bought at 136 lek and sold at 136,5 leks.

    [03] Sport: "Teuta" volleyball players eliminated in the second phase of European Championships Cup

    Durres, November 30 (ata) - By Gezim Kabashi - Women volleyball players of "Teuta" team is eliminated in the second phase of European Championships Cup.

    The girls from Durresi lost the two matches with "Sllavia UK" team in Bratislava, Slovania.The score was 0-3.

    The matches are held in Bratislave in conformity with the agreement with Slovakia club and European Federate of Volley-ball CEVI due to the lack of financial possibilities by the part of Durresi team, told on Tuesday the Head of Teuta Club Orest Petani. The matches took place on Saturday and Sunday in Bratislava and are conducted by two referees, one from Austria and other from Slovakia. /lh/linda/

    [04] PHARE Program assists Albanian private sector

    Tirana, November 30 (ata) - By Dorian Koca - European Union through PHARE Program assisted private sector in Albania in two main directions. This assistance is concentrated mainly in private sector SME and in technical assistance on establishing the institutions offering services for business community.

    PHARE Program is involved in private sector SME since the end of 1997, and according to the sources from the Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Trade cooperation with different EU countries exist in this issue.

    Thus, Germany in cooperation with Albanian Government is supporting the credit of Albanian business worth 7,5 million marks and technical assistance as well.

    Italy in its assistance economic program for Albania paid great attention to SME development in Albania. The initiative project marks the value of some 8 billion liras.

    Meanwhile, the Greek support with credits marks the value of 5 billion drachmas. /lh/linda/

    [05] President Meidani takes part in activities of "Don Bosko" Center in Tirana on the occasion of National Feasts

    Tirana, November 30 (ata) - By P.Shuteriqi - Albanian President Rexhep Meidani took attended the activities organized on Tuesday by the social center "Don Bosko" in Tirana on the occasion of National Feasts.

    In these activities President Meidani hailed the students and the staff of this center.

    The head of this center Don Mateo di Fiore made evident the spiritual, ethic-social values, the students of this center are educated.

    The winners of the competition "This is my Albania", with the best works in poetry, drawings and photos of the students of this center are announced in this activity.

    President Meidani was present in the ceremony of arising the flag and execution of National Hymn and visited the classes and the labs of professional center "Don Bosko".

    Different training courses are organizing in this center.It is furnished with modern labs for several courses, including foreign languages(Italian, English and German).

    "Don Bosko" center is set up six years ago with the contribution of Salesian sisters aiming at professional education and skills of Albanian youth in conformity with the programs approved by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

    At the moment there are 250 boys and girls, 14-18, in this center. /lh/linda/

    [06] Consolidate relations between Albanian and Israel

    Tirana, November 30 (ata) - By R.Xhuvani - Parliament Speaker Skender Gjinushi considered as consolidated the relations between Albania and Israel, in the meeting held on Tuesday with Israel Ambassador Yuhuda Millo, accredited in Albania.

    Gjinushi estimated the visit of Israel Parliament Speaker in Albania, to be held soon, and considered it as a step forward in the strengthening of inter-parliamentary relations.

    Albanian Parliament Speaker talked about the reforms that are undergoing in the justice system and stressed that Parliament supports the attempts against the crime, corruption and smuggling through the approval of necessary legal frame.

    Israel Ambassador said that the relations with Albania are good one. Nevertheless, the governance party will have dialogs with all of them. He expressed the will for further extension of inter-parliamentary relations between the two countries and the economic cooperation to be at the proper level. /lh/linda/

    [07] 12 illegal Kurds carrying false passports detained in North Albania

    TIRANE, Nov. 30 (ata) - By Urim Bajrami: Police of Mirdita detained on Monday 12 illegal Kurds carrying false passports, said to ATA official sources of the Public Order Ministry.

    The Kurds were detained along the Puka-Rreshen road during an operation by local police.

    Over the last three months, this is the first case when Kurd illegals are detained in the northern part of Albania. After the last operations of police of Vlore and in all southern Albania to block illegal traffic aiming Italian coastline, now the Kurds are tempting to enter Albania through other of its border points. /dast/xh/

    [08] Meetings of Albanian political class to be institutionalized - PM Meta

    TIRANE, Nov. 30 (ata) - Albanian Prime Minister Ilir Meta had a meeting on Tuesday with the Deputy Premier of the Government of Kosova, Mehmet Harizi, in which he stressed the need to institutionalise the meetings between the Albanian political class on both sides of the border and asked that these meetings be more frequent, said to ATA the spokeswoman of the Prime Minister.

    "It is a task of the political class of Kosova to make what is possible for the creation of democratic institutions in Kosova and to create that climate of peace which would enable the holding of free elections in the country," said Meta.

    The deputy Premier of the Government of Kosove voiced the conviction that the relations between the political class of the two countries will further strengthen.

    He stressed that efforts are being made by the political class to manage ease the situation and create an inner equilibrium.

    Harizi expressed the belief that very soon an appropriate climate will be created in Kosova for the strengthening of the institutions which will emerge from the free people's vote. /dast/xh/

    [09] Albanian President Meidani meets with British Lord Spenser

    TIRANE, Nov. 30 (ata) - By Klotilda Bicaku: Albanian President Rexhep Meidani met on Tuesday with Lord Spenser, brother of Princess Diana, who is in Albania on occasion of the inauguration of the children's book library bearing the name of the Princess.

    Lord Spenser, says a report of the press office of the President, thanked President Meidani and other Albanian authorities for their participation in the inauguration ceremony of this library.

    "There is no better memory for my sister in Albania than this library, " said Lord Spenser. He voiced his readiness to work in England to raise funds for the realization of a mobile library for Albanian cities and villages.

    President Meidani highlighted the work of the Task Force Foundation Albania for the creation of a library of Tirana and expressed the conviction in its contribution to convey world culture in this country where English language is more and more being spoken. /dast/xh/

    [10] Kosova needs cohesion of its political forces - Meidani

    TIRANE, Nov. 30 (ata) - Albanian President Rexhep Meidani held on Tuesday a meeting with deputy Premier of the Interim Government of Kosova Mehmet Hajrizi, in which it was stressed the need of cooperation between political forces of Kosova as an important factor for the quick solution of its problems, the President's press office reports.

    "After the end of the conflict, the center of the attention of the international factor passed on to Kosova, therefore the Albanian political forces must retain the present cohesion up to the period of elections," said President Meidani.

    Mr Hajrizi considered as important the contribution of Albania to various fields of life in Kosova, which, he said, is facing difficult problems.

    After briefing President Meidani of the political situation in Kosova, Hajrizi considered as indispensable the solution of the problem of Mitrovica, not simply for the free movement of the citizens, but also to put into operation the complex of Trepce, objective which would help solve many social problems of the people in the area. /dast/xh/

    [11] EU ranks first in Albania's trade relations

    TIRANE, Nov.30 (ata) - By Dorian Koca: The European Union takes the main place Albania's foreign trade relations.

    Since 1991 until now, these relations have kept boosting. In 1991, the exports with the EU countries took 39.4 per cent of the total exports of Albania, while in 1998 they took 92.5 per cent of the whole volume.

    The growing tendency of these exchanges is also seen in the first nine month period of 1999, during which Albania has exported nearly 191,5 million dollar commodities or 93 per cent of the export realized for EU.

    The same tendency is also seen with the index of import. So, if in 1991 the import from these countries has occupied 44.2 per cent of the total volume of import, in 1998 this figure was 82.6 per cent and this tendency is also noticed in the nine-month period of 1999, during which the value of imports is 710 million dollars or 80 per cent of the total realised import. /dast/xh/

    [12] Albanian President's greeting on occasion of 90th anniversary of Elbasan Normal School

    TIRANE, Nov. 30 (ata) - By Klotilda Bicaku: The President of Albania Rexhep Meidani sent on Tuesday a message of congratulations to the Normal School of Elbasan on occasion of its 90th anniversary, the President's press office reports.

    "Being unable to take part in your commemorative meeting, I send you my best wishes for the success of your school and all the activities to be held to mark the 90th anniversary if this school," writes President Meidani in his letter of congratulations.

    All must bow before and honour the contribution of the Normal School, its directors, teachers and pupils, writes the letter among others. Their work has had its impact in all Albanian territories, in Albania, Kosova, Macedonia and wee must seek to further heighten it. Thanks to this work, Elbasan turned into a pole of national culture and education, and it must continue to be such with the devotion of everybody, wrote president Meidani in his letter. /xh/

    [13] A dinghy with 27 illegal people on board, sequestered in Vlore

    VLORE, Nov. 30 (ata) - By Harilla Koci: Police forces of Vlore blocked on early on Tuesday a dinghy with 27 illegals in one of the beaches of Uji i Ftohte in that city, said to ATA the spokesman of the the department of Police of Prefecture.

    The spokesman said that the dinghy was sent to the Island Sazan where other such dinghies were previously collected and were under the protection of forces of Guardia di Finanza.

    This is the third dinghy sequestered by police of Vlora over four of its operations during the past week. /dast/xh/

    [14] Representatives of Albanian Government meet with Greek investors

    TIRANE, Nov. 30 (ata) - By Eva Londo: Representatives of Albanian state and business and businessmen from the Inter-Balkan center for the Increase of Investments in Thessaloniki met on Tuesday in Tirana to make the balancesheet of the Greek investments in Albania.

    The Albanian Minister of Economy and Privatization Zef Preci and the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Tirana, Luan Bregasi stressed the possibility for investments given to the Greek firms in Albania in the context of the Stability Pact.

    For the Ambassador of Greece in Albania, Aleksandros Mallias, "Greece is the first partner of Albania."

    There are more than 300 million dollars that Greece has offered to Albania of which 205 million in the form of trade exchanges and 100 million are investments on concrete objects.

    Ambassador Mallias is engaged in a fruitful cooperation with the Albanian Government so that about 600 million dollars from the work of Albanian Emigrants in Albania be turned to Albania through the banking system and later this money may be invested in production fields of Albania.

    While in the framework of the Stability Pact, the Greek Government has accorded a fund of 17 billion drachmas. /era/xh/
