  • [01] Italian PM D'Alema willing to further strengthen relations with Albania

    TIRANE, Oct. 31 (ata) - Italian Prime Minister Massimo D'Alema expressed on Saturday his determination to further strengthen the relations between Italy and Albania in a message he addressed the new-designate Albanian PM Ilir Meta.

    "I am sure that the relations between our two countries will further strengthen during your mandate, while the cooperation between Albania and Italy will continue to be promoted and will increase especially in the light of the strategic character that the relations between our two countries have assumed recently," writes the message handed over to Meta on Saturday afternoon by the Italian Ambassador in Albania, Mario Bova.

    D'Alema writes that the development of political, economic and cooperation relations in all the mutual beneficial sectors and the initiatives for an institutional support of the democratic processes and the priority interventions in the field of security, may favour the growth of investments and qualified projects of development both in the European and institutional levels.

    "The Stability Pact for Southeast Europe favours a general increase of the regional cooperation and creates chances for a stability throughout the region," says the message of Italian PM Massimo D'Alema to Albanian PM Ilir Meta. /era/xh/

    [02] Crime figures lower due to capture of many gangs in Albania

    TIRANE, Oct. 31 (ata) - By Th. thanasi: The successful actions of Albanian police in catching gangs has led to a considerable growth of security and have influenced in the reduction of crimes, said on Saturday the General Director of Police in the Public Order Ministry, Colonel Veli Myftari during the analysis of the work for the third quarter of the current year in the department he directs.

    According to the figures reported in this analysis, during the third quarter of this year, there are registered 21 penal acts, 35 violent thefts and 64 cases of ordinary thefts less then the previous quarter. During this month 1 636 penal acts have been made, among which 1 356 uncovered.

    Minister of Public Order Spartak Poci, present in the meeting, asked from all the structures of police stability and increase of the striking force, perfection of the execution of laws, revision of the tasks of the end of the year and the determining of the year 2000 on the basis of the new government.

    "Now Albanian police, with maximal support from the U.S., neighbouring countries and CE has entered a new stage of its work: to hit organized crime," stressed Poci during the meeting. /lh/xh/

    [03] Police in Vlore detain 29 Chinese illegals

    VLORE, Oct. 31 (ata) - By H Koci: Police forces in Vlore detained last Saturday 29 Chinese illegals in a house in one of the city quarters of Vlore, which was serving as a shelter for illegal people aiming to pass onto the other side of the coast, said to ATA the spokesman of the police department of the prefecture of Vlore.

    The Chinese people had arrived in Vlore from Saranda, hopint to reach Italian coasts on board of speedboats in a few days. The Chinese were accompanied to the local police commissariat and then returned to Tirane, said sources from the commissariat.

    Police arrested the owner of the house where the Chinese illegals were sheltered, and it turned out he was one of the members of the traffickers network.

    It is the first time after several years that Chinese nationals become contingents of the people wanting to cross illegally to Italy. In the first place among the foreigners who are participants in the men- smuggling system centered in Vlore are the illegal Kurds. /led/xh/

    [04] A dinghy with 20 illegal people on board sequestered in Durres

    DURRES, Oct. 31 (ata) - By Gezim Kabashi: Coastal border police of Durres, in cooperation with Guardia di Finanza, blocked and sequestered last Saturday a dinghy with 20 illegal people on board, who aimed to reach Italian coast.

    According to the police of the prefecture of Durres, Albert Pilo, the dinghy was intercepted about 5 miles from the cape of Lagji, south of bay of Durres.

    In order to avoid the pursuit of Italian-Albanian police forces, the dinghy leaders threw into sea five people, among whom three children, some meters before reaching the coast. Risking their lives, the policemen managed to rescue the five people in the sea.

    The rest, profiting from the darkness, could flee, while one of the speedboat leaders was identified and in cooperation with the Kavaja district commissariat, work is going on to arrest him, said Poli.

    Only in the past two months, criminal police and forces of Guardia di Finanza have sequestered 21 dinghies and speedboats, thus increasing the efficiency of the fight against trafficking of all sorts. /led/xh/

    [05] Our governments continue to work together to the good of Albanian people - Thaci

    TIRANE, Oct. 31 (ata) - By Ylli Pata: Hashim Thaci, chairman of the Provisional Government of Kosova sent a message of congratulations to the new-designate prime minister of Albania, Ilir Meta, the premier's cabinet told ATA.

    "On occasion of your election to the post of the Prime Minister of Albania, allow me to express my special satisfaction, gratitude and cordial thanks for the unsparing aid that the Albanian people and state have given to the people of Kosova in very difficult moments, when our existence as a people and nation was put at stake," writes among others Mr Thaci in his message to the chairman of the Albanian Government.

    PM Thaci pledges in his message to his counterpart Meta, a closer cooperation between the two governments "to work together to the good of the Albanian people.' /led/xh/

    [06] Strict control in customs house of Kapshtice for food articles

    KAPSHTICE, Oct. 31 (ata) - By B Fejzullai: Food articles which enter Albanian through the customs point of Kapshtica (southeast of Albania) undergo a strict control, sources from this customs house reported to ATA on Sunday.

    According to them, measures have been taken in that border crossing so that none of the food articles pass the border without first being controlled by the food inspectorate which functions round the clock.

    Samples of these products are analysed in laboratories set for food standards and quality in Bilisht and in Korce. Analysis are made everyday in these laboratories for nearly 15 samples of food items which enter that customs house, and they are mostly formeat and milk by products.

    The chief veterinary doctor of the city hall of Korce, Stefan Barka said that during the control made in food item shops, they have blocked a considerable amount of pig meat, sausages and eggs without having the proper certificate from the food specialists. Such food articles, according to him, have been brought in the country illegally through the Lake Prespa. /led/xh/

    [07] Customs house in Gore of Kukes to open

    KUKES, Oct. 31 (ata) - By R Hoxha: The establishment of a customs house in the zone of Gore, Kukes district, bordering Kosova, is necessary, was the conclusion of the chiefs in commune of Shishtavec, Kukes and those of Dragash in Kosova.

    In a meeting held in Shishtavec, the chief of the commune of Dragash, Hajriz meleqi, said that they had expressed their opinion on the need of this customs point to the Interim Government of Kosova, which has supported this request. While, from UNMIK "we have not received any reply yet."

    The chairman of the Commune of Shishtavec (remote mountain zone of Kukes) Dulejman Nela, said that "we consider indispensable this customs point and for this we have notified the state structures of Albania."

    Actually, the inhabitants of Shishtavec have to travel more than four hours, through the customs point of Morini, to go to Dragash. The border zone from Shishtavec to Morine is mined and it is a danger for the life of the people passing there. /led/xh/

    [08] Infrastructure in Puke improving

    PUKE, Oct 31 (ATA)-By M. Malja, Rehabilitation of three projects in Puke will further improve the infrastructure of this town, Mayor Halit Furriku said on Sunday.

    Furriku said the works have been completed on the town's main road, for which the Albanian Development Fund invested 22.5 million leks.

    Meanwhile, with a fund of 9.8 million leks form the state budget, works are going on for the rehabilitation of the town's aqueduct which receives water near the source from the Peshkve village. The works on this project will be completed within 1999, the mayor explains.

    He said work goes on also for the reparation of the town's ring-road, 2.5 km long. These works are envisaged to be completed on December 20. /lh/lm/

    [09] Eighth boxing championship for youths ends

    TIRANE, Oct 31 (ATA)-By A. Keko,

    The eighth national boxing championship for youth (aged between 17 and 18) ended on Saturday in the premises of the Sports compound "Dinamo" in the capital.

    Taking part in this activity are 13 teams such as Flamurtari, Vllaznia, Partizani, Kukes, Teuta, Dinamo, Berati, Pogradec, Apolonia, Albanet, Patos and other teams.

    There were 55 boxers, who, according to specialists, interesting matches were held in general. Elements to represent Albania in the qualifying matches to win the right of participating in the Olympic Games of Sydney.

    At the end of the championship the winners according to weights were: 51 kg E. Zeka Vllaznia 54 kg L. Mehmeti Apolonia 57 kg A. Rapushi Teuta 60 kg A. Muhedini Albanet 63,5 kg S. Shkjau Vllaznia 67 kg A. Ahmeti Mjeshteria Sportive 71 kg R. Shtembari Patosi 75 kg G. Matellari Pogradeci 81 kg O. Braho Vllaznia

    Meanwhile the best boxer of the championship was declared Rrapushi of Teuta, while Patosi was declared the Fair Play team. /lh/lm/

    [10] Works on new premises of Sarande port begin

    SARANDE, Oct 31(ATA)-By Sh. Hajno, The implementation of the project for building new premises for Sarande port began on Sunday, according to the director of the port, Vasil Duka.

    He said that the works are being carried out through a fund of seven million leks provided by the state which will serve as a beginning to set up the building compound of the port's terminal.

    The premises include mainly the labour office and a premise for the border police.

    The works are being carried out by the local firm "Interbeton", winner of the bid, which is envisaged to complete them within the first three months of 2000. /lh/lm/
