  • [01] Albania is on the road of its integration into Euro-Atlantic structures - Ruperez

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ata) - The President of the North Atlantic Assembly, Javier Ruperez was optimistic on Wednesday for the democratization of Albania and its road towards the integration in Euro-Atlantic.

    "I have closely followed the latest developments in Albania and I have the impression that it is on the road of its democratization and integration into Euro-Atlantic structures," said Ruperez in a meeting he had in Tirane with the Albanian Foreign Minister, Paskal Milo, the press department of the FM told ATA.

    Regarding Albania's commitment in the North Atlantic structures, Milo stressed that Albania has been among the first countries of the region which has requested its membership in this organization.

    "Presently, Albania is playing an active role in the Partnership for Peace structure," said Milo.

    Further on, the talk focused on the present developments in Kosova. Minister Milo voiced the readiness of Albania to further contribute, like in the period of the crisis, to the construction of the democratic institutions in Kosova. /dast/xh/

    [02] Albania - a strategic point for regional stability - Gjinushi

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ata) - The Albanian Parliament Speaker, Skender Gjinushi, said on Wednesday that Albania is an important point for the regional stability, said to ATA the press office of the People's Assembly of Albania (Parliament.)

    During a meeting in Tirane with the President of the North Atlantic Parliamentary Assembly, Javier Ruperez, Gjinushi highlighted the positive role of this Assembly and NATO for the contribution made during the crisis in Kosova.

    "This crisis is a clear evidence that the Albanian factor in the region is a factor for stability and Albania is an important point for the regional stability," said Gjinushi.

    Mr Ruperez appreciated the local developments considering them positive and calm.

    Referring to the Seminar for the peace process in Southeast Europe to be held on Thursday, he said that "for the Parliamentary Assembly this seminar is considered as interesting, while for Albania as very important. /dast/xh/

    [03] The Albanian Privatization Strategy to include aqueducts too

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA) By M.Pupa: - The Privatization Strategy of the Albanian Economy included the aqueducts as well.

    The idea of this platform is that consumers pay to the private the water they use.

    The ministrer of Privatization Ylli Bufi and the minister of Transports Ingrid Shuli, on Wednesday agreed to outline the full draft of the file on aqueducts sector policies by October, comprising, "the specific law on the aqueducts privatization, the approval of the operations plan and their transformation into trade companies. /dast/gs/

    [05] The abandoned children - social wound needing care

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA) By G. Dilaveri: - The serious condition of the abandoned children, orphans or those living in the streets in Albania, lay in front of the state organisms and non governmental organizations the duty to take care of the children, to unite and coordinate their efforts to ease this social wound.

    The specialist of the Ministry of Work and Social Affairs Zamira Sinoimeri, says it is important to pass an adequate legislation to support projects on this issue.

    "Actually the ward law does not exist, so the passing of another law on adoption and adopting practices is indispensable", she pointed out.

    Some 2 000 children live actually in the street. Only some 1 050 out of 15 000 children are treated in the state or private orphanages. /dast/gs/

    [06] Albania is leaving behind the past heritage - Albanian Premier

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA) By E. Nepravishta: - Albania is leaving behind its past heritage, similar to the ones of the other ex communist countries, the Albanian Premier said on Thursday in the seminar on "Peace Security in the Southeastern Europe".

    "This way (toward progress) is inspired by the well known principles of democracy, the respect for the fundamental human rights and freedom and the market economy", said Majko in this seminar organized by the Parliamentary Assembly of North Atlantic and the Albanian Parliament.

    The only problem according to the Albanian Premier, is which of the countries will prosper faster in this direction and which offers greater possibilities and concrete prompting to achieve this aim.

    In the seminar will also participate the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of North Atlantic, Xavier Ruperez. The seminar started today and will end on Saturday. /dast/gs/

    [07] President of Hellenic Diaspora voiced interest for investments in Albania

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ata) - By E Metaj: The President of the Hellenic Diaspora, the Greek-American Andrew Athens expressed the interest to invest in Albania in a meeting he had on Thursday in Tirane with the Albanian Minister of Finances, Anastas Angjeli.

    The renowned magnate and businessman, Athens expressed special interest in the market of investments in Albania, mostly in the way applied for the privatization of small and medium enterprises and for the purchase procedures used for the strategic sectors of the Albanian economy.

    Minister Angjeli presented the macro-economic situation and agreed with Mr Athens to organize a meeting with representatives of the chambers of commerce and members of the Council he represents, for the presentation of the projects and plans for businesses by the Greek businessmen interested to make investments in various sectors of the Albanian economy. /dast/xh/

    [08] Former police chief of the Kukes prefecture killed

    BAJRAM CURRI, Oct 14 (ATA) By R. Hoxha: - The former police chief of the Kukes prefecture and another citizen were killed by fire weapons on Wednesday evening in the city of Bajram Curri, police sources report.

    Jonuz Hyka, 39, former police chief in the Kukes prefecture together with Mysli Cokaj, 48, from Shoshaj village of this district, were loading house equipment onto a truck, since he was being transferred in Tirane as the personnel chief of special police forces, when three unidentified persons opened fire with automatic weapons leaving them dead on the spot.

    Hyka's murder near his house in the city quarter "Partizani", referring to the preliminary data of the investigating group, is thought to be committed for revenge motives.

    During the period January-September 1998 Jonuz Hyka was the police commissariat chief of the Tropoje district, afterwards until last July he was director of the police directorate in the Kukes prefecture.

    Last July Jonuz's brother got killed in a shooting out in the city of Bajram Curri.

    The murder of Hyka and another person in Bajram Curri, North-East of Albania, raises once more the order and security problem, after months of relative tranquility. /gs/

    [09] Some 34 Kurds and Iraki illegals detained

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ata) - By Urim Bajrami: Some 34 Kurd and Iraki illegals were detained on Wednesday but some hours later they were handed over to Greek authorities, sources from the Public Order Ministry of Albania told ATA.

    The illegals were detained yesterday at noon near the border post of Konispol, Saranda district, south Albania, during a police operation.

    The illegal people had entered some 500 meters deep in the Albanian territory and after verification, it came out they were coming from Greece.

    The same sources added that after the necessary acts by Albanian police, the illegals were turned back to Greece through the border point of Qafe Bote. /dast/xh/

    [10] Albanian Foreign Minister leaves for Kosova on Saturday

    TIRANE, Oct.14 (ata) - Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo will go on Saturday on a two-day visit to Kosova, the press office of the Foreign Ministry told ATA.

    According to this office, during this visit, the first of an Albanian foreign minister to Kosova, Mr Milo is expected to meet with senior representatives of UNMIK, the interim Government of Kosova and with leaders of political parties and other personalities in Kosova. /dast/xh/

    [11] Exchange rates of Lek with foreign currencies

    TIRANE, Oct.14 - By Elton Metaj: On Thursday morning, Lek has won some points in its exchange rates with the U.S. dollar. The same tendency has also been noticed in the exchanges of lek with other foreign currencies in the Tirana money market.

    In the state-run Savings Bank, one dollar was bought at 131.2 lek and sold at 133.3 lek. In the exchnage rates of dollar with lek there is a great difference noticed between the selling and buying values for the U.S. currency.

    [12] Albanian-Slovenian cooperation in sea transport

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ata) - By M Pupa: Albania and Slovenia will develop further their cooperation in the sector of sea transport, said to ATA sources from the Transport Ministry.

    According to these sources, Minister Ingrid Shuli, had a meeting with the port manager of KOPER in Slovenia, Vojko Tercon, in which they talked on the possibilities for extension of the cooperation between the Port of Durres and that of KOPER.

    The main fields of this cooperation will be the intensification of the movement of goods and passengers between the two ports and the creation of portal facilities and greater spaces from both sides for the transit passage of commodities. /dast/xh/

    [13] The German investment to comply with the Public Investments Program

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA) By E. Metaj: - The German investment projects in Albania will conform the definitions in the Public Investments Program for the time span 2000-2003, which is expected to complete by November 1999, sources of the Ministry of Commerce and Economic Cooperation reported on Thursday.

    The minister of Commerce and Economic Cooperation Ermelinda Meksi and the delegation of the German Bundestag Economic Commission, headed by Mrs. Dagmar Schmidt, agreed on this issue in a meeting they had on Wednesday.

    [14] Angjeli invites EBRD to take part in privatising Savings Bank

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA)-By A. Lila,

    Albanian Finance Minister Anastas Angjeli on Thursday invited the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to take part in the privatisation of the Savings Bank (SB), as the biggest bank in Albania.

    At e meeting with the Directors Board of EBRD, Angjeli handed over to them a copy of the draft-law "On the Privatisation of the Savings Bank" to give the respective assessment.

    The EBRD representatives praised the performance of the Finance Ministry in preserving the economic parameters at home, especially reducing inflation to odd number level.

    Also, Angjeli and the EBRD Directors Board discussed the strategy followed in privatising the National Commercial Bank in which EBRD plays an important role.

    "We will be present at the meeting due on November 8 with "Kent Bank" and IFC and reconfirm our engagement in this process", the BERD representatives said.

    They added that they had come to Albania to come into direct contact with and closely see the developments at home.

    "We will discuss the projects, in which we will take part," BERD delegation confirmed.

    EBRD also expressed interest in investing in tourism. Angjeli highlighted the interest in tourism and expressed himself in favour of an increase of investments in infrastructure, communication and energy to precede investments in tourism. /led/lm/

    [15] Turkey to support Albania to adhere NATO

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA)- Enkelejda Koraqi, The Turkish Minister of Defence, Sabahedin Çakmakoglu, said on Thursday, in Tirana that Turkey will support the efforts of Albania to adhere to NATO in the framework of partnership for peace.

    "Turkey is the initiator for the creation of the international peace force for Southeastern Europe. Balkan's multinational brigade will be an important factor to keep peace and stability", the Turkish minister told a joint news conference with the Albanian minister of Defence Luan Hajdaraga.

    Hajdaraga stressed that " Turkey is one of our most important partners in the military cooperation field".

    The Albanian army is in its reconstruction phase, having clear objectives to keep up with NATO's standards. Referring to the situation in the region Hajdaraga said that "Turkey and Albania will support all initiatives to favor peace in the region".

    Referring to the situation in the Albanian border, Hajdaraga stressed that "the situation has changed as the result of the establishment of peace in Kosova and in this framework Albania is closely cooperating with NATO's troops of COMMZ(W) in Tirana and KFOR in Kosova. /led/so/

    [16] We should be realistic in implementing Stability Pact - Majko

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA)-By E. Nepravishta, Albanian Prime Minister Pandeli Majko on Thursday met with the coordinator of the Stability Pact, Bodo Hombach, and said "we should be realistic in implementing the Stability pact in the region."

    "You, as a coordinator of the Stability Pact, if this pact comes out successful, will be the prime minister of the small Southeastern European Union," Majko told Hombach.

    Majko said that the Balkans is product of the past and in order to build the future "we should distance ourselves from this negative past".

    Hombach said he understands the will of the people to enable the implementation of the Stability Pact and, according to him, several small successes have so far been achieved in this direction. /led/lm/

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA)- By Ornela Kadaificiu, The scientist Luftulla Peza, was awarded the medal "2000 distinguished scientist of the 20 century" by the International Biographical Center of Cambridge, for his outstanding activity in fields of geology and paleontology.

    Dr. Luftulla Peza is currently conducting his scientist activity in the Academy of Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic. He has been awarded the scientific degree "Doctor of Geologic sciences" in 1988, and the title old scientific Cooperator, (Docent), in 1985. /led/so/

    [18] US$ 5 million to support Albanian agriculture

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA)-By E. Xhajanka, The U.S. government has financed a new project worth around US$ five million in support of the Albanian agricultural development.

    "The newest project of IFDC, financed by the U.S. government through USAID, is again in support of the Albanian agricultural development," Claude Freeman, chief of the project "Aid for the Albanian Agricultural Trade Associations" (AAATA/IFDC), told a news conference on Thursday.

    The project intends to provide the agricultural trade associations with assistance for a three to five year period. /led/lm/

    [19] "Floryhen" covers about 35% of egg market in Albania

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ATA) - By A.Lila: The Italian-Albanian Company "Floryhen" with its center in Durres, participant in Agr.-food fair "Consumer 1999", is the greatest egg-producing company in Albania.

    This company has started its operation in Albania 7 years ago and the success, according to its representatives, is an outcome of four main factors that are races, technology, food and organization.

    Actually FLORYHEN produces 200 eggs a day and 100 million eggs a year. The product reaches the consumer not later than 24 hours form the production moment, and this factor has eliminated the need of a refrigerator.

    Created in December of 1992, and having a surface of 6 hectares, "Floryhen" egg complex aims at controlling the egg market through a detailed market policy. /led/A.A/

    [20] Government approves privatisation structure of "Albkrom"

    The Albanian government met yesterday under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Pandeli Majko and approved the draft-law "On defining the form and structure of the privatisation formula for the privatisation of the anonymous company 'Albcrom'".

    This draft-law has to do with the privatisation of mineral sector of "Albkrom" and completion of the legal framework of this sector, to turn it into a free market economy.

    The draft-law also intends the treatment of social problems, emerging from suplus workers of these companies, following the privatisation process, approving wages for a two-year period under the law "On the strategy of privatising secotrs of special importance". /led/lm/

    [21] Meidani encourages Athens for realization of objectives

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ATA) - The President of Albanian Republic, Rexhep Meidani encouraged on Monday the representative of American-Greek community in U.S.A., Andrew Athens on the realization of the objectives of his organization.

    During a meeting Andrew Athens held with Albanian President on Thursday, he presented the ideas of his organization consisting on settlment of several health care centers in some areas of Albania, on creation of small and middle enterprises of business, and on establishment of cooperation between the Albanian-American and Greek-American diaspora aiming at increasing their investments in Albania.

    Albanian President informed the Greek interlocutor of the attempts needed to be made for the consolidation of Albanian nation lobby in the diaspora, thing which will contribute in development of relations with U.S.A., economical development of the country, preservation of the language, traditions and the like. /s.sh/A.A/

    [22] Government approves cooper industry concession

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA)- By E. Metaj, The Albanian Government, on Thursday, approved the contract to allow the U.S company "The Metal Research Group Corp" to use several cooper industry units.

    The U.S company has requested the use of cooper industry. It foresees to invest about US$ 75 million, during the first 5 years, to increase cooper reserves, the opening and exploitation of new sources, upgrading, mineral refining and production of electric wires and cables.

    The continuity of cooper production, the productivity of this industry and many social problems connected with employment will follow the consession of the use of cooper industry.

    Cooper industry resumed operations following damages of March, 1997. /led/so/

    [23] Italy interested on effictiveness of aid to Albania

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ATA) - By Elton Metaj: The Italian ambassador to Albania, Mario Bova, held talks with the Albanian Minister of Economic Cooperation, Ermelinda Meksi, where he revealed that Italy is interested that its aid for Albanian people be as much effective and visible as possible.

    Ambassador Bova supported the idea that the achieving of this goal needs adoption of the necessary measures to prepare the projects and studies in order to render finances quick and effective.

    Meksi pointed out that all the attempts to coordinate properly and to orientate the Albanian priorities such as the water supply, energy, and the construction of road infrastructure are being carried further in the context of the Program of Public Investments.

    Albanian minister highlighted that "We are looking forwards to the beginning of works for the important Italian reconstruction of the internal aqueduct network in a dominant part of Tirane, worth 53 billion Liras".

    Minister Meksi pointed out as well that the work with the Italian part in the development field is actually being carried out and considered this cooperation level as very good. /led/A.A/
