    PRISHTINE, Oct 13 (ATA) - Belul Jashari, ATA correspondent reports:

    Kosove renowned intellectual, academic Rexhep Qosja, is nominated "The international man of the year 1997-1998" by the International Biographic Center in Cambridge. This prize is awarded to the respected personalities, distinguished in the international community. The name of the winner has access to the Dictionary of International Biographies.

    Academician Rexhep Qosja is also nominated this year for "The international biography of honor" by the American Biographic Institute, which is awarded to the individuals distinguished in the society for the extraordinary contribution in their professions and communities.

    Academician Qosja is also included in the volume of "Five thousand world personalities" published by American Biographic Institute. Academic Qosja is invited to become a member of Research Council of the Counselors of this Institute. /lola/

    [02] We hail Albanian government's cooperation with NATO

    -Solana sends letter to Albania's Premier- TIRANA, Oct 13 (ATA)-By E. Nepravishta, NATO Secretary-General Javier Solana, in a letter sent to Albania's Prime Minister Pandeli Majko, on Tuesday, says that the North Atlantic Council on Tuesday issued an "Activation Order", both for limited air strikes and a phased campaign of aerial bombardment on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia.

    Solana says that during the whole process until the adoption of this decision NATO has fully informed Albania and other border states on the Alliance's ideas and decisions.

    "We will continue to hold close consultations with your representatives in Brussels, while the situation advances," says Solana, also stressing his gratitude to the Albanian government for allowing NATO to use the Albanian air space and hailing cooperation in this aspect.

    "I want to be fully clear that the Allies will very seriously consider any attack on a partner country by the Yugoslav Federation," says Solana.

    NATO has constantly stressed that security of all member countries is inseparably connected with all the partner states in Europe, as "their security is a direct preoccupation for us," Solana concludes. /a.ke/lm/

    [03] Football: Albania's national team to face Norway

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA) By A.Keko

    Albania' national football team guided by Astrit Hafizi, Faruk Sejdini and Perlat Musta, will face today at 19.00 the Norwegian team in Oslo, in the scheduled match valid for the Second Group of Euro 2000.

    The coach Hafizi has available the following players; Strakosha, Beqaj, Shulku, Xhumba, Vata, Haxhi, Lala, B.Kola, Bushi, Rraklli, Tare, K. Dalipi, Halili, Daiu, Gallo, and Osmani.

    [04] Ambassadors of "Friends of Albania", OSCE and CoE meet Public Order officers

    TIRANA, Oct 13 (ATA)-By E.Koraqi, Ambassadors of the "Friends of Albania" group, OSCE and CoE as well as representatives of western missions, which have long been active in Albania,

    had a working meeting with Public Order Ministry senior officers on Tuesday.

    The participants at the meeting, held on the initiative of OSCE Ambassador Daan Everts, also discussed the aid to be provided for the Albanian police.

    "The political situation at home has begun to calm down with the beginning of Majko government's performance," said Public Order Minister Petro Koci.

    He added that "order is of priority in the new government's programme. In this context all errors committed so far in the performance of the public order forces are expected to be corrected and financial backing to this end will not be lacking either."

    On behalf of the Albanian Government Koci thanked the participants for their assistance in stabilising order in Albania.

    Deputy Minister of Public Order Ilir Cano briefed the participants on what has been done so far and concentrated himself on the improvement of police performance in fighting crime.

    In a technical portray of the public order performance, Cano pointed to the aid and close cooperation with the western missions active in Albania, such as the Interforce mission between Italy and Albania and MAPE.

    The public order officers making evident the aid provided so far for the Albanian police also set forward the urgent needs of the public order forces in Albania.

    The ambassador at the meeting reconfirmed the readiness and constant aid of the nations they represent. /lm/

    [05] Conditions put by WB for Durres port met

    DURRES, Oct 14 (ATA)-By S. Gjorderni, Some 600 jobs have been cut at the Durres seaport recently. This was one of the most difficult conditions put by the World Bank (WB) for the release of $ 23 million to modernise this port.

    The vice-director of the port, Zamir Ramadani, told ATA that the job cut is carried out conform the law, according to which the workers will receive payment for one year while on the second year they will be provided with social benefits.

    The ferry site has been emptied of the unauthorised buildings, which have been dismantled to pave the way for the release of $ 11 million to expand and modernise this site.

    Fulfilment of these conditions put by the World Bank enables the beginning of work in all the territory of the port based on the projects, with the aim to turn it in one of the most significant ports of the Adriatic. /s.s/lm/

    [06] Contemporary methods for pre-university education

    TIRANE, Oct 14 (ATA) By P.Shuteriqi Upgrading teaching process at all the levels remains one of the priorities in the pre-university education system, sources from Ministry of Education and Science (MES) say.

    "The beginning of educational teaching process in the pre-university education system is followed by an intensive work to meet the needs of this system in infrastructure, physic rehabilitation of the schools, building of new teaching environments and their supply with didactic and laboratory means," Andrea Marto, deputy Minister of Education said to ATA.

    In all the country lessons are continuing as normal in over 4 610 education institutions of this system, in which more than 100 000 attend eight-year and secondary schools alone.

    "The identification and intrudaction of contemporary educational models along with their application beginning from the preschool education institutions, based on the excisting conditions, is one of the prior objectives aimed to be reached by year 2 000," Dr.Marto said.

    "Changes being carried out in the secondary education level are applied in the structure, subject and the organisation of this system upgrading pupils'education, in order to face the demands set forth for the present and the future by labour market and high schools in and out the country," Rexhep Cuko, director at MES said.

    A special attention is also paid to strengthen school's cooperation with community, organising activities in the interest of the pupils and development of the region and broader. /lola/

    [07] Some 40 million lek damage caused by fire in Shishtufine, Tirana

    TIRANA, Oct 14 (ATA)-By Th.Thanasi, The damage caused by the fire engulfing the warehouses of the Turbo-Model company in Shishtufine of Tirana is estimated at approximately 40 million leks.

    The spokesman of the Tirana Police department told ATA on Wednesday that the fire has damaged large quantities of boots, shoes and raw material for shoe production.

    According to initial investigations the cause of the fire is thought to have been a careless act on the part of the workers of this firm who, using candles for power cut, have left them lit when leaving the work. /s.s/lm/

    [08] Bodies of four Albanians found in Carrabreg of Decan

    PRISHTINE, Oct 14 (ATA)-The bodies of four killed Albanians, of whom three over 70, were found in Carrabreg of Decan yesterday, while reports from the Decan commune say that Serb forces continue to be located in Suke of Bitesh, in Baballoq and in the Voksh village, according to the Kosova Information Centre (KIC).

    KIC says these villages continue to be under siege and the population are not allowed to move. In the Gjakove commune the Serb military and police forces are camouflaging their positions, while truckloads of troops and armaments are seen to move along the road leading towards the border belt. /p.ta/lm/

    [09] Democratic Union Movement of Kosova hails creation of Albania's new government

    TIRANA, Oct 14 (ATA)-The Kosova Democratic Union Movement, formed recently as a political union of the Albanian National Union Party, Albanian Democratic Movement, Kosova Parliamentary Party and Albanian Liberal Party, hails the creation of the new government of Albania.

    A report of the Albanian Information Department says that the Democratic Union Party regards cooperation between Albania and Kosova as an important process for the solution to the Kosova issue.

    It is also convinced that this government will continue to be effectively engaged in national reconciliation, stabilisation and general progress of Albania for the solution of the national issue. /a.ke/lm/

    [10] Albania's Football Juniors (21-year-old) beaten by Norway 4-1

    TIRANE, Oct 13 (ATA) By A.Keko

    On Tuesday afternoon in Drammen, Norway the match between Albania and Norway juniors was played for the Group 2, European Championship 2000.

    The Norwegian team won 4-1.

    The goals were scored by Carew John (26', 47' and 76') and Gullerud Marius (82'). While for Albanian team, the only goal was scored by Albert Duro (42').

    A small number of fans, about 1 700, attended the match.

    That was the second match for the Albania's juniors inside the Group following the match with Georgia, where Albania won 1-0, with the goal scored by the defender Albert Duro.

    Greece won 3-2 the match played on Tuesday with Georgia. After these two matches, standings for the Group 2 is as follow: 1. Norway 9 3 3 0 0 (9-2) 2. Greece 4 2 1 1 0 (5- 4) 3. Georgia 3 3 1 0 2 (4-5) 4. Albania 3 2 1 0 1 (2-4) 5. Slovenia 1 2 0 1 1 (3- 5) 6. Latvia 0 2 0 0 2 (1-4)

    [11] The attack against military unit in Shkodra district fails

    SHKODER, Oct.14 (ATA) - By M.Malja The armed attack of a group of persons against a military unit in Shkodra district failed. The guards and the service officers have react courageously causing the failure of the tentatives on the attack.

    The spokesmen of Shkodra division told ATA that, at about 23.00 on Tuesday a group of armed persons have attacked the military unit of Kukel village, situated 25 kilometers away from the city.

    In the help of the guards and service officers came immediately the police mobile forces. Afterwards the aggressors left the spot through the darkness and wild ground.

    The motives of the attack, according to the police forces, are thought to be the robbing of weapons.

    The inquiry group, which immediately went to the spot,is working to throw light on the circumstances and to identify the authors of this act. /s.s/A.A/

    [12] Brojka greets reelection of Mayor in Athens

    TIRANA, Oct. 14 (ATA) - By G. Dilaveri: The Mayor of Tirana, Albert Brojka, sent a message of greetings to Dimitris Avramopoulos, mayor of the town-hall in Athens, on the occasion of his election for a second four-year mandate in the local polls of October 11, the Secretary General of the Association of the Albanian Mayors, Valter Gjoni, told ATA on Tuesday.

    "The cooperation between the two mayors is intensive and includes the cooperation between the two cities and two associations of respective countries," Gjoni.

    The mayor of Athens has given a great contribution by helping the Albanian emigrants in Athens, because he has taken several initiatives to assist Albania and support the Albanians. This reelection offers the possibility to further continue the cooperation of the above levels, stressed Gjoni. /dast/mt/

    [14] Agreement on two Dutch projects in field of agriculture in Albania to be implemented

    TIRANE, OCT.14 (ATA) - By E Xhajanka: An agreement between the Albanian Government and the Dutch Government has been signed on the Project of the Agricultural National Advisory Service and Consolidation of the Plants Protection.

    The agreement covers the institutionalization of these projects for bilateral cooperation in the field of agriculture and food.

    The two projects have been operating in Albania since 1997, but the agreement, according to the Ministry of Agriculture of Albania, will create new possibilities to improve the legal framework in the adoption of the practices of phytosanitary control, according to the set norms.

    The national agricultural advisory service is a continuation of the work made by PHARE and other donors in the focus of which is the increase of the quality of this service.

    The finance for the project will be 4.1 million dollars and for the plants protection 1.4 million dollars with an important contribution, along with the Dutch Government, also by the Albanian party. /xh/

    [15] Albanians soon to use International Diners Club credit cards

    TIRANE, Oct.14 (ATA) - By L.Thanasi Diners Club Albania and the Italian- Albanian Bank signed on Tuesday a contract to issue in Albania the International Diners Club credit cards.

    There will be two kinds of credit cards: the Corporation Credit Cards, destined to be used by Albanian business men, and the Personal Credit Card that are to be used by the Albanian citizens with financial possibilities and security. /A.A/

    [16] Construction of health center in Qesarat village ends

    SARANDE, Oct. 14 (ATA) - By Sh. Hajno: The construction of the health center in the village of Qesarat, the region of the Greek minority in the district of Saranda (Southern Albania) ended on Wednesday.

    The fund worth 3 million lek for the construction of this institution was enabled by the World Bank, the chairman of the commune of Livadhja, Vangjel Anagnosti, told ATA. According to him, the new health center would serve the six villages of this area.

    According to sources from the district public health department, most of the health centers in communes faced grave damages during last year's turmoil. Some 30% of these institutions were put to operation after the reconstructions carried out during this year with the funds allocated mainly by the World Bank. /dast/mt/

    [17] Two Albanians killed by Serb mines in border line with Albania

    PRISHTINA, Oct. 14 (ATA) - By Belul Jashari: Two Albanian young men were killed Tuesday in the village of Ponoshec, in Gjakova due to the explosion of mines placed by the Yugoslav Army in the border line of Kosova with Albania.

    Too many Serb forces continue to be deployed in this border line, according to sources from the Kosova Democratic League. The Serb police set up today another roadblock between Gjakova and Prizeren in the main axe of the road which leads to the border region of Has.

    The movements of the Serb military forces have continued even in the city of Gjakova.

    Four Albanians, members of Lleshaj family, were arrested on Tuesday during an intervention of the Serb military forces in Osek Hyle village. /dast/mt/

    [18] Grants of Dutch government allocated for Albania's agriculture

    TIRANE, Oct. 14 (ATA) - The different projects that are being implemented in Albania in the field of agriculture are financed and continue to be supported by the Dutch government, said the Dutch ambassador to Albania, Henk Heijnen, after signing an agreement between the Albanian government and the Duch kingdom.

    In the first project of the World Bank for irrigate rehabilitation Dutch government released $ 7millions and according to their promise they are expected to contribute in the second irrigation project, which is expected to begin in January 1999.

    In Word Bank project for agroprocess Holland is to allocate 1 million USD for tecnical assistance and rehabilitation of nutritive control labs. /A.A/

    [19] Serb road blocks set up in 14 villages of Skenderaj

    PRISHTINA, Oct. 14 - ATA correspondent in Prishtina, Belul Jashari, reports:

    The Serb forces, deployed in Drenice, continue to keep the village under an iron surrounding.

    The roadblocks of the Serb forces have been set up in 14 villages in the commune of Skenderaj, sources from the Human Rights Council in Kosova reported.

    According to these sources, five roadblocks have been set up in Llaushe village and three in Lokofo village. Many of these Serb forces were also deployed in the houses of Albanians. Too many roadblocks were established in the villages of Polac, Makermal, Polluzhe, Ternafc, Cubrel, Vitak, Funike, Suhogerll, Padalishte, Lacine and Citak, while a base of the Yugoslav army is deployed in the village of Acareve.

    Other Serb forces have been deployed in several places of Skenderaj. /dast/mt/

    [20] Pressure by international community to Belgrade must continue - envoy

    PRISHTINE, Oct.14 (ATA) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports: The special envoy of the European Union for Kosove, Volfgang Petric, Austria's Ambassador in Belgrade, arrived in Prishtine today and had a closed-door meeting with Kosova President Dr Ibrahim Rugova.

    Rugova and Ambassador Petric reportedly talked extensively on the situation in Kosove and the efforts of the international community to ease the humanitarian catastrophe, as well as to create the premises for the beginning of negotiations between Prishtine and Belgrade on the political solution to the question of Kosove.

    President Rugova highlighted the important ultimatum of NATO for the implementation of the Resolution 1199 of the U.N Security Council on Kosove and the defence of its people. He considered a positive step the efforts by Ambassador Holbrooke for the establishment of a broad OSCE verification mission on the ground and of a NATO mission to monitor from the air in Kosove.

    President Rugova stressed that international pressure towards Belgrade must continue along with efforts to create the premises for a negotiated solution to the question of Kosove, in conformity with the will of the people of Kosove. /dast/xh/

    [21] SP launches campaign for constitutional referendum

    TIRANA, Oct. 14 (ATA) - By Ylli Pata: The Albanian Socialist Party declared Wednesday the beginning of the political action of this party to positively finish the constitutional referendum, likely to be held by the end of November.

    The General Leading Committee of the Socialist Party held a regular meeting on Wednesday afternoon and took many decisions in order to be successful in the people's referendum for the new constitution. The General Leading Committee of the Socialist Party elected a central commission which will lead the campaign of this party in support the constitution approval. The SP leader, Fatos Nano, was elected chairman of this commission.

    The Socialist Leader, in the opening address held in the meeting of the General Leading Committee, said that "The Constitution is the big proof which will show the force of the Socialist Party as a progressive force." Nano stretched the hand of cooperation to the Democratic Party regarding the constitution, but on the conditions that it should respect the institutions.

    The SP Leading Committee also voted for the elections of three secretaries of these parties after the resignation of Koci, Ulqini and Lakrori, who were elected in the new government of Premier Majko. /dast/mt/

    [22] Work to recover ancient Archaeological Park in Durres start

    DURRES, Oct.14 (ata) - By Gezim Kabashi: Soon Durres will have its ancient Archaeological Park, with some of the most important monuments of the ancient and mediaeval periods of that city.

    The excavations for the recovery of this park started Wednesday afternoon with a symbolic ceremony attended by representatives of local government and cultural institutions.

    For the first phase of the excavation work, the Durres town-hall has allocated a fund of 500 thousand lek.

    According to the leader of the work there, archaeologist Afrim Hoti, the park is presumed to cover an area of nearly 2 500 square meters and will display on the ground objects of the Roman period, uncovered in 1964 and of the Byzantium period recovered in 1987, and which date back to the 1st-2nd centuries and 6th-7th centuries before Christ, and the mosaic of the "Durres Beauty Lass," a work of Illyrian artists of the 6th-3d centuries, proving that the centre of the ancient city of Durres has been reconstructed in the same place over a period of over 2 300 years. /dast/xh/

    [23] Greece hails agreement on Kosova

    TIRANA, Oct. 14 (ATA) - Greece greeted the agreement achieved for the solution of the Kosova crisis and urged the Kosova leadership to adhere to the peace procedures, press and information office close to the Greek Embassy in Tirana reported through a press release.

    "Greece, feeling relieved like the other countries of the region..., hails the agreement achieved Tuesday between Holbrooke and Milosevic to put an end to the crisis in Kosova. In this framework, Greece invites the Kosovar leadership, headed by Rugova, to adhere to the peace procedures, invites UÇK to demonstrate now the maturity that peace requests, says the statement of the Greek Minister of Press and Massive Media and spokesman of the Greek government, Dimitris Repas.

    Promising that the Greek party will make all the efforts so that the peace procedures are successful, Repas confirmed in his statement that "Greece, like in the past, will take part with forces and means ...particularly in the verification mission of OSCE, which is expression of the initiative of last June taken by the Greek PM Kostas Simitis."

    Repas also said that Greece trusts in a good ending of this process.

    "Greece invited its friends and partners in Europe and mainly the neighbouring countries to offer common assistance in this big effort," said Repas. /dast/mt/

    [24] European Parliament hails Albania PM

    TIRANA, Oct. 14 (ATA) - The deputy chairman of the European Parliament, Renzo Imbeni, has sent a message to the Albanian Prime Minister, Pandeli Majko, which says: "We were informed that the Albanian Parliament gave the vote of confidence for the government you head. We are sure that this decision represents a positive change for a country which we all find it very sympathetic.

    The renovation of the Albanian leaders, both in the government and in the opposition, would favour a real cooperation in the Albanian Parliament and society, to the interest of the country," ends the message of the deputy chairman of the European Parliament, Renzo Imbeni, addressed to Albania PM Pandeli Majko. /dast/mt/

    [25] First Lady takes part in Conference "Women of 21-st century"

    TIRANA, Oct. 14 (ATA) - The first lady of Albania, Lidra Meidani, was guest of honor in the conference "The Women of the 21-st century" together with the wives of the presidents of USA, Macedonia, Rumania and Slovenia, as well as the Premiers of Greece and Turkey, which was held on October 10-12 in Sofia, Bulgaria.

    Mrs. Meidani took part in all the activities and held different talks with senior personalities of Bulgaria and guests from other countries of the region.

    The wife of the Albanian President held warm meetings even with compatriots from Kosova and Macedonia. /dast/mt/
