  • [01] 8 million lek for the territory of church Saint Koll

    TIRANE, August 26 /ATA - By K.Shehu/ - The area in front of Church of Saint Koll, in Lezha town, where our national Hero Gjergj Kastrioti (Skanderbeg) is burried, is occupied by illegal buildings, which make impossible the surrounding of church with wall.

    "Ministry of Culture approved recently a fund of 8 million lek for the surrounding wall and restoration of Skanderbeg's memorial", specialists of Institute of Monuments told to ATA.

    Institute of Monuments of Culture has asked to local government in Lezha to intervene for the destruction of illegal kiosks surrounding the church.

    Lezha (Northwest Albania) is one of the most ancient towns in Albania and place where were put first foundation of the Albanian state, by Gjergj Kastrioti Skanerbeg, with creation of the League of Princes, in the XV century./mima/fh/

    [02] Over 1 million USD for cigarette factory in Gjirokastra

    GJIROKASTER, August 27 /ATA - H.Cani/ - The well-known Greek firm of cigarettes "Karelia" will offer a fund of 1 million USD for the reopening of the cigarette factory in Gjirokastra (South Albania), according a contract signed by both parties.

    According Arjan Spiri, member of the leading board of the Albanian factory, this aid will consist in the equipment of this factory with new modern machinery.

    Gjirokastra factory was closed some years ago because of the weak quality of production, as result of a long use of machinery. Reopening of this factory will enable employment of a considerable number of workers./mima/fh/

    [03] Gjakove: Supply of population with food paralysed

    PRISHTINE, August 27 (ATA)-There are no full reports about the consequences of yesterday's Serb attacks in the area of the Has village on the border belt with Albania as it is completely under the siege of the Serb military and police forces, according to the Kosova Information Centre (KIC).

    According to the above source the situation of the displaced population in the city of Gjakova, especially in the mountains of Dushkaja, is very grave.

    The Serb forces on Monday attacked 13 Albanian villages, for the first time since the outbreak of conflict in Kosova (90 per cent of the population is Albanian), killing at least six people and giving rise to a new influx of refugees.

    "The supply of the Albanian population of Kosova in Gjakova with food articles has been completely paralysed and the lack of bread supply is being felt.

    The social trade organisation "Metohija Promet" is supplying only the Serb population," says KIC. /mima/lm/

    [04] TNT explosion in Gjirokaster, no casualties

    GJIROKASTER, August 27 (ATA)-By H. Cani, A powerful TNT explosion shocked one of the quarters of Gjirokaster city (Southern Albania) on Wednesday after midnight, but it caused no casualties, only material damages, chief of the city police station, Islam Qibini, told ATA.

    According to the above source, a TNT amount was placed nearly 20 m near the city's upper quarters at around 24.05 on Thursday.

    "We have to do with a pure terrorist act. These are individual acts and not linked with political motives," said Qibini.

    He said that a "Benz" car had passed on the spot only few minutes before the blast.

    Over 20 explosions have occurred in Gjirokaster since December '97 and the responsible for them have not yet been brought to justice.

    The explosion of a large amount of explosive five days ago completely destroyed an enterprise of construction materials "Arginert", one of the biggest in Southern Albania. /mima/lm/

    [05] Medicines will be advertised in public media

    TIRANE, August 26 /ATA - By R.Xhuvani/ - A new law will come in force on September 1, '98, and will give lawful force to means of information of public media to advertise medicines available in Albanian pharmacies, told to ATA, Artur Rada, spokesman of Ministry of Health.

    "According a law, recently passed in the Albanian parliament, it is a right of Minister of Health to decide on the quantity and kind of medicines to be advertised," spokesman said./mima/fh/

    [06] Prize "On Human Rights" awarded to Women's Centre and "Reflections"

    TIRANA, August 27 (ATA)-By Rudina Xhuvani, The Women's Centre (QG) and the association "Reflections" were awarded the prize "On Human Rights" by the "Human Rights Defenders of Minnesota" (U.S.)

    The motivation for the prize was propaganda on women's human rights in Albania after 1990, a period characterised by vast economic, political and social changes.

    During this period the Women's centre has also offered technical assistance to women's organisations at home, while the association "Reflections" opened the first centre on sexual abuse in Albania, to offer assistance to women - victims of violence," the QG representative, Sonila Qirjaku, told ATA on Thursday. /mima/lm/

    [07] Austrian Embassy car robbed in Tirana

    TIRANE, August 27 /ATA - By Th. Thanasi/ - A car of Austrian Embassy in Tirana was robbed in the first hours of Thursday by unidentified persons, said to ATA spokesman of Police Department of Tirana prefecture.

    According to spokesman, cultural attache of Austria, Martin Garner declared that two unidentified people have ambushed him, at about 00:10 of Thursday, threatened him with arms and taken away his car, type "Nissan Terano."

    According to spokesman, Wednesday evening unidentified people have taken the car of German citizen, Rals Paul Fehling, an employee of the GTZ Foundation.

    "Police is investigating for the identification and to capture authors of these actions," said spokesman./mima/fh/

    [08] Julia Taft visits flesh points in Kosova, 11 Albanians massacred

    PRISHTINE, August 27/ATA correspondent in Kosova Behlul Jashari reports: U.S. assistant Secretary of State for Refugees, Julia Taft, arrived in Prishtine on Friday, and left for areas swept by fighting in Kosova.

    Serbian forces on Wednesday evening scorched the villages of Southwest Kosova, while this operation hit on Thursday the suburbs of Lipjan, Gllogoc, Shtimje, as well as those in the suburbs of Suhareke, Malisheve, Rahovec, Kline down to the border belt with Albania, in the suburbs of Decan and Gjakove.

    Meanwhile fighting between the Albanian and Serb defence forces has been carried on over the past 24 hours in many regions, while the fiercest fighting took place on Wednesday evening in the suburbs of Skenderaj, in Drenice, but so far there have been no reports on their aftermath.

    According to the sub-council for Human rights in Suhareke (Kosova) a shell from a Serb tank killed eight children and three women, members of the Asllani family, and seriously injured three brothers, all on a trailer of a tractor, which was transporting them to escape the Serbian attacks.

    The killed persons are Albiona Asllani, six months, Antigona Asllani, one year old, Xhafer Asllani, three years old, Shpend Asllani, 9 years old, Lumnie Asllani, 11 years old, Burim Asllani, 13 years old, Aishe Asllani, 27 years old, Halite Asllani, 37 years old and Jalldyze Asllani 69 years old. /mima/lm/

    [09] Meidani and Papaconstandinou praise relations between Albania and CE

    TIRANA, August 27(ATA)-President of the Republic Rexhep Meidani and the representative of the Council of Europe to Albania, Andreas Papaconstandinou met on Thursday and noticed a spirit of understanding between Albania and this organisation, according to the spokesman of the President of the Republic.

    The president praised the steps undertaken by this organisation regarding the assistance and expertise needed to improve Albanian legislation.

    The CE Secretary General, Tarchys, will visit Albania in September. /mima/lm/

    [10] A drug trafficker arrested in Saranda

    SARANDE, August 27 /ATA - By Sh. Hajno/ - Saranda police arrested Thursday a citizen, who was transporting in his car about 100 kg drug (Cannabis), said to ATA, Chief of Police Commissariat in Saranda, Saimir Hamiti.

    According him, the accused, Naim Uruçi, 33 years old, previously sentenced for clandestine trafficking, was arrested Thursday morning, as he was leaving in direction of Corfu.

    According the same source, Uruçi is part of a trafficking network acting in Vlore-Sarande-Corfu./mima/fh/

    [11] Serb tank kills eight Albanian children and three women

    PRISHTINE, August 27 (ata) - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reports:

    Eleven Albanians, 8 children and 3 women, all members of the same family, were shot dead yesterday afternoon by a tank of the Serb forces, while three other Albanians, all brothers, were gravely wounded.

    The shell of a tank fell on the trailer of a tractor on which were the members of Asllani family who were leaving to escape Serb attack in village Grapce of the commune of Shtimje. The sub-council for Defence of Human Rights in Suhareke reports that Albiona, 6 months, Antigona, 1 year, Xhaferi, 3, Shpendi, 5, Luljeta, 7, Ejupi, 9, Lumniu, 11, Burimi, 13, Ajsheja, 27, Halidja, 37 and Jalldyzja, 65, were all shot dead. /das/xh/

    [12] Cooperation between Free University of Berlin and Tirane Agricultural University

    TIRANE, August 26 (ata) - By E Xhajanka: As a result of a fruitful cooperation between the Free University of Berlin and the Tirane Agricultural University, different equipment from Germany have been donated to the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Tirane.

    The aid is estimated at 50 thousand dollars and is realised in addition to the project that the Agricultural University of Albania has with Germany. The aid consists of microscopes, contemporary literature, various equipment, etc. /xh/

    [13] First auction on Aug. 28 for assets of former pyramid schemes in Albania

    TIRANE, August 27 (ata) - By Lolita Thanasi: The first auction will be held on August 28 for the selling of the assets of the former fraudulent loan-taking companies.

    For this auction, to be held in the Centre of Auctions, three catalogues have been made available for the customers, which later were put on sale following the adoption of the law "On the way and procedure of the selling of the assets of nonbanking judicial persons who have taken loans from people." The first catalogue consisted of vehicles, cars, lorries, vans, equipment and office furniture, house appliances and tv sets. The second catalogue consisted of water tanks, tipping trucks, refrigerator lorries and tourist buses, while the third consisted of "Iliria" bar and restaurant in Durres, storehouses in "Uji i Ftohte" in Vlore, etc.

    The persons who will appear for the sale must first pay 20 per cent of the amount of the purchase in the running account in the Savings Bank. /xh/

    [14] Albania's President Meidani meets with president of Est-Liberte Forum

    TIRANE, August 27 (ata) - By Enkelejda Koraqi: The President of the Republic of Albania, Rexhep Meidani, highlighted the role of the French Est- Liberte Forum in the consolidation of the relations of friendship between France and Albania, the spokesman of the press office of the President's Office told ATA.

    During the meeting on Thursday of President Meidani with the president of Est-Liberte Yves Michalon, the two stressed the spirit of cooperation existing between the two friendly countries.

    Mr Michalon voiced the high appreciation of Est-Liberte and its political-intellectual circles for the role of the highest ranking institutions of the Albanian state in facing the sharp problems of the country and the correct stands regarding the developments in Kosove. The Forum Est-Liberte is working to promote democracy in former communist countries, in Albania as well, said Michalon during the meeting. He added that a special work is being made especially for the information on the economic reform.

    Albania has always felt the presence and aid of Est-Liberte, said President Meidani.

    At the end of the meeting, Mr Meidani hailed the new projects of Est Liberte Forum, assuring his support for their realisation. /das/xh/

    [15] Pangallos to inaugurate Greek Consulate in Korce on Sunday

    TIRANE, August 27 (ata) - By I Luto: Greek Foreign Minister, Theodoros Pangallos arrives in Korce on Sunday to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the Greek Consulate in that city.

    According to the press department in the Albanian Foreign Ministry, Pangallos will meet with his Albanian counterpart, Paskal Milo, who will accompany the Greek high diplomat over his visit to Korce.

    During his visit, which ends on Sunday afternoon, Pangallos is expected to take part in the inauguration ceremony of the Greek Consulate in Korce, to visit the University in Korce in which the Greek library will be inaugurated, he will meet Greek businessmen operating in the city of Korce and will visit the Greek Consulate. /das/xh/

    [16] Exercise "Drini '98" conducted in Albania

    HAS, August 27 (ata) - By Riza Hoxha: After 11 days of intensive training, the forces of the Second Infantry Division of the district of Kukes (North of Albania) had a demonstrating exercise named "Drini '98."

    The exercise started on Thuirsday at about 10 a.m. with the participation of 650 military troops, of whom 150 were reservists. The objective of the exercise was compact fighting defensive operations of the infantry battalion and increase of organizing, directing capabilities of the commands and staffs.

    Attending the exercise were also the Parliament Speaker, Skender Gjinushi, deputy Prime Minister, Kastriot Islami, deputy Parliament Speaker, Namik Dokle, Defence Minister, Luan Hajdaraga, Chief of the Army General Staff, Brigade General, Aleks Andoni, the chairman of the parliamentary foreign commission, Sabri Godo, the military attaches of the NATO countries and other states accredited in Tirane. /das/xh/

    [17] Albanian deputy minister of Justice meets director of Joint Kuwaiti Committee

    TIRANE, August 27 (ata) - By Enkeljeda Koraqi: Albanian Government will observe strictly and without discrimination the rights of foreign citizens who are in Albania, stressed last Thursday the Albanian deputy Minister of Justice, Artan Hajdari during a working meeting with the director of the Joint Kuwaiti Committee for Charity, El-Faki, the spokesman of the Ministry of Justice, Agim Neza told ATA.

    The director of the Kuwaiti Committee voiced the concerns of his committee over the situation created by the terrorist elements throughout the world. In his address, he assured Albanian deputy Minister of Justice that the Egyptian employees working in the Foundation of this Committee in Albania, are carrying out activities conformed to the Albanian legislation and are not involved in any terrorist activity.

    Referring to the situation created by the terrorist elements, Hajdari stressed that the Albanian state is resolute to fight every illegal and terrorist act carried out by foreign or Albanian nationals.

    We are for the development of relations of normal and mutual cooperation with all the countries we have diplomatic relations, said Mr Hajdari, adding that Albania has respected and continues to respect the charity foundations and committees operating in Albania in conformity with the Albanian laws and conventions this country has signed.

    At the end of the meeting, the Kuwaiti director voiced his readiness for cooperation and verification of the activity of the charity foundation El-Faki in Albania. /das/xh/

    [18] 30 Kosovars arrive in Has on Thursday

    HAS,August 27 (ata) - By Riza Hoxha: At about 1 a.m. on Thursday, more than 30 people from Kosove crossed the border in the zone of Vlane, Has district, the chief of the district police commissariat, Sali Gera told ATA.

    According to him, border police forces, in cooperation with the local government, helped take them to the town of Krume.

    The mayor of Krume, Zenel Kastrati, said that there are presently 350 Kosovars in Has and a good part of the Kosova refugees in that district keep going to lowland areas in Albania.

    Geraj added that the situation in that district is generally calm. During the last days, there have been no border incidents while border police have intensified their service along the 28.6 km border line. /das/xh/

    [19] Five world operas in Italy by Albanian opera artists

    TIRANE, August 27 (ata) - By K Shehu: Five renowned operas staged by the Opera and Theater Troupe of Albania will be presented in mid-September in Rome of Italy, at the invitation of the Manager of the Agency of Opera and Ballet activities Raffaelo Guera, the leader of the Opera Theater orchestra Bujar Llapi told ATA.

    Operas "Carmen," "Tosca," "Traviata," "Pagliaccio" and "Cavaleria Rusticana" will be performed for some days for the Italian public.

    Additionally, sources of the Opera and Ballet Theater say that the orchestra of this theater will perform three symphony concerts, conducted by Italian Luigi Fabri, in Como of Italy on October 13-16, 1998. /das/xh/
