[14] System of Venetian castles in focus of a joint Italian-Greek program soon

TIRANE, August 24 (ata) - By K Shehu: The system of Mediaeval castles, which have been named "The Venetian Castles," along the Albanian, Dalmatian and Greek coasts will be soon restored under a joint program between Greece and Italy to be funded by the European Union.

Artan Shkreli, director of the Institute of Monuments of Culture, told ATA that "the program, which will start simultaneously in other zones, will initially consist of the work to prepare the catalogues for the Venetian castles in every zone."

As for the Albanian coast to be presented in the catalogue, besides the number of the Venetian coasts on this coast to be determined also the term Venetian castle will be explained. This meaning may be related with the facts that they have been castles under the Venetian jurisdiction, have been constructed by Venetians or have been Albanian castles which have served the Venetians as well.

Most of the castles found on the Albanian coast, says Shkreli, are Venetian, which, according to him, "might have been built by Albanian or Venetian princes, but which have always been under Venetian control."

According to specialists, the aforesaid castles had been under the control of the Venice Republic until the 17th century and later after the fall of this republic the castles fell in the hands of the Turks.

For Albania they have been of great values as they have served as customs points and contact between Albania and the West. /das/xh/lm/
