  • [01] Italy's Foreign Ministry Secretary General arrives in Tirana on Sunday

    TIRANA, April 25 (ATA)-Italy's Foreign Ministry Secretary General, ambassador Vatani, arrives in Tirana today for a one-day visit, Foreign Ministry Press and Information department reports.

    Vatani will meet with Foreign Minister Paskal Milo, Parliament's speaker Skender Gjinushi and Chairman of the Parliament's Foreign Policy Commission, Sabri Godo.

    Vatani will also have a separate meeting with Albania's Prime Minister Fatos Nano.

    Relations between the two countries, especially the situation in Kosova, on the eve of the Contact Group's meeting in Rome on April 29, will be at the centre of the meetings. /s.s/mima/lm/

    [02] Guardia di Finanza's activity to extend to Albania's south

    DURRES, April 26 (ATA)-By G. Kabashi, A protocol-agreement will be signed between Albanian and Italian Public Order Ministries in few weeks to prolong the mandate of the INTERFORZE mission of Guardia di Finanza (Italian coastguard) in Albania and extend its activity to its south, authorized sources of Guardia di Finanza report.

    Colonel-Lieutenant Massimo Mocelli told ATA that besides Albanian police effective's sea and land training, importance will be devoted in the future to the coordination of the performance with the police commissariats of the coastal districts of Central and Southern Albania to prevent illegal trafficking.

    Since the beginning of November '97, the naval military forces of Guardia di finanza, in cooperation with the Albanian border police, have intercepted dozens of rubber dinghies and speedboats aiming illegal emigrants' trafficking towards Italian shores. /a.ke/mima/lm/

    [03] Yugoslav Army releases names of 10 Albanians killed in Koshare

    PRISHTINE, April 26 (ATA)-The Serbian news agency TANJUG yesterday, under the title "Bodies of 10 terrorists identified", issued a statement of the Nish Military tribunal which released the names of 10 Albanians killed in a Yugoslav army operation on April 23 near the border crossing 'Koshare', between Kosova and Albania, the Kosova Information Centre (QIK) reports.

    The statement says that "the judge of the above tribunal, Lieutenant- Colonel Radenko Miladinoviq saw ten bodies and a great amount of foreign made weapons, ammunition and military equipment in Koshare, where the incident took place on April 23.

    The statement says that "after the recognition of the killed by the persons arrested and also based on the identification papers, the killed result to be: Shefqet Selim Aliaj, Bekim Sali Aliaj, Hasan Bajram Tahiraj, Skender Qazim Hajdaraj, Gazmend Hasan Ramaj, Uke Misin Shabani, Sadik Lush Alijaj, Hasan Tahir Dinaj, Hajdar Ramadan Taçaj and Vehbi Asllan Hasanaj.

    It says that during the survey on the spot the identificaiton papers of the following persons were also found: Gezim Shefqet Haredinaj, Arben Bajram Hadergjonaj, Beqe Binak Lokaj, Imer Isuf Lokaj, Bekim Shefqet Mazrekaj and Xhemajl Sejdi Mazrekaj, who might have been killed in the above event.

    The identification process continues, the statement says adding that Gazmend Mustafe Tahiraj and Iber Sherif Metaj have been arrested and their cases have been referred to military tribunal of Nish.

    The statement does not mention Naim Maloku and several former Albanian military superiors in the former Yugoslav army who were reported dead by the Yugoslav media several days ago. /p.ta/mima/lm/

    [04] Situation in Drenica extremely aggravated

    PRISHTINE, April 26 - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reported that the situation in Drenica on Sunday was extremely aggravated with Serbian forces attacking the Albanian villages.

    Sources of the Council of the Human Rights in Kosova said that some Albanians were injured and it was thought that others were killed.

    A source of the Council from Klina reported that large reinforcements of Serbian army, police and civilians urgently armed were heading for Drenica.

    The reports added that villages of the commune of Klina, Siqevas, Jellovci, Ujëmire, Qabiqi and others next to the Drenica region were blocked by the Serbian forces.

    It was reported that the Albanians' houses came under grenade attack. Volleys of gunfire were heard from there. There was no report as the region was sealed off to the media. la/mima/ak/

    [05] Six Albanians injured in a grenade attack in Drenica

    PRISHTINE, April 26 - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reported on Sunday that the first reliable reports from the remote parts of Drenica spoke of Serbian forces' attack with heavy weapons in the last three days.

    Four people including a nine-year child, his mother and his brothers Besim, 30, and Avni Shala, 35, were injured in a grenade attack.

    Two other Albanians, a woman and a youth, were injured in Sicevë, a Klina commune. la/mima/ak/

    [06] Fights continue in Gjakova, Decan areas

    PRISHTINA, April 26 - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reported on Sunday that an aggravated situation prevailed in Kosova adding that skirmishes continued in regions of Gjakova and Decan, next to the border with Albania.

    On Saturday night, the Serbian military and police forces have attacked with grenades Suka and Natici of Cermjan and other villages of Dushkaja in Gjakova. Eldiana Tahiraj, 4, and her mother Xhemile, 35, were injured in a grenade attack in the Herec village.

    Roars of canon and heavy artillery were heard far away even in the Gjakova city, which was sealed off by Serb military and police forces.

    After taking positions in Radoniq, Serbs forced the Albanian guards of the hydro system to leave and replaced him with their guards.

    They have blocked access to Herag village, where the Yugoslav army sent the corpses of ten Albanians killed. Their funeral was planned for tomorrow.

    Kidnaping and arrests continue in Gjakova, Decan and their surroundings.

    Some men were arrested last night in Gjakova and their houses were raided as they had given shelter to war refugees from the hot spots. la/mima/ak/

    [07] Albanian Speaker meet with Italian senior diplomat

    TIRANA, April 26 (ATA) - Secretary-General of the Italian Foreign Ministry Umberto Vattani said on Sunday in Tirana that Kosova enjoyed the sympathy of the international community, which had intensified efforts to start a dialogue between Prishtina and Belgrade, press and information office at parliament said.

    Vattani, who said this in a meeting with the Albanian parliamentary Speaker Skender Gjinushi and head of the permanent foreign commission Sabri Godo, added that his visit in Tirana had a reporting character on the eve of the Contact Group meeting in Rome on the Kosova issue.

    Gjinushi said that the recent attacks on villages of Kosova clearly showed how Belgrade was praising the recommendations of the Contact Group.

    "Any delay in assessing the situation in Kosova from the Contact Group endangered not only further escalation of the situation there but also in the neighbouring countries and broader, in the Balkan region," Godo said.

    Gjinushi focused on the Albanian-Italian relations considering them important for Albania's developments and stability in the region.

    He said that the arrival of President of the Italian parliament Luciano Violante in Tirana soon would be another sign of interparliamentary cooperation. ake/mima/ak/

    [08] 20 Albanians killed by Serb forces buried in Kosova

    PRISHTINA, April 26 - ATA correspondent Behlul Jashari reported that 20 Albanians killed in recent military operations of the Serbian military and police forces in Gjakova, Deçan and Pej were buried on Sunday in Kosova.

    Nine people were buried in Sllup, Deçan and one in Klicine, Peja today. Ten others will be buried tomorrow, nine of them in Hereq and one in another village of the Gjakova commune.

    Over ten thousand Albanians braved today the Serb military-police curfew and the state of emergency to attend the funerals in Sllup, Deçan, where all the people paid last tributes to the nation's martyrs who were killed in defence of liberty, house, territory of Kosova. fh/ak/
