  • [01] Tense situation in Decan, Gjakova regions

PRISHTINE, March 25 - ATA correspondent in Prishtina Behlul Jashari reported that the situation in Decan region, a commune near the Northern border with Albania, which was attacked on Monday by the Serbian forces, was increasingly worsened though the shootings were sporadically heard early on Wednesday.

Reports from Gjakova said that other Serb forces had arrived in Decan early on Wednesday. Almost seven houses in Glogjan were destroyed by a grenade launcher attack.

There is no report on the death toll because the regions are sealed off by Serbian forces.

A spokesman of the Democratic League of Kosova (LDK) in Gjakova Besa Orllati, said that the situation in the city and the surrounding areas was increasingly tensed after the artillery bombing and volleys of fire weapons, which continued until midnight.

Movements of troops were seen in the city early today and large forces were deployed in Ponoshec village.

The Serbian media informed that on Wednesday evening at 20.40 a bomb exploded in a Serb house, but the Albanian sources had no report on such a blast.

The Serbian agency Beta said that "armed confrontations between the police and Albanians in the Gjakova region have continued until midnight," while other reports said that many wounded people were sent to Peja and Prishtina hospital. pta/das/ak/

[05] France favours status of real autonomy for Kosova Albanians

TIRANA, March 25 (ATA) - President of France Jacques Chirac in a letter to his Albanian counterpart Rexhep Meidani said that with France's full support, the Contact Group, European Union and Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) have adopted tight measures to use pressure on Belgrade authorities denouncing all terrorist activities.

The French ambassador Patrick Christmant on Wednesday handed a letter of Chirac to Meidani in response to a letter sent by the Albanian president on March 12, which expressed the deep concern for the increasing tense situation in Kosova.

The letter said "today there exists a wide consensus of the international community that neither the status quo nor the independence of Kosova do not represent realist options and all our efforts should aim at finding a political solution based on a status for a real autonomy for the Albanians of Kosova, within the existing international borders."

"France is satisfied with the general position Albania has adopted during all the crisis and encouraged it to continue this way and back dialogue and negotiations, which should be followed by the leadership of the Albanians of Kosova," the French president said.

Chirac said that he was satisfied with "the almost similar stands and confidence existed between the two states on the Kosova issue and the necessity to coordinate the action between the Contact Group, European Union and regional states, which would be clearly expressed during a joint meeting of their representatives on March 25 in Bonn." ake/mima/ak/

[06] Albania,FYROM relations a model of cooperation for whole region

TIRANA, March 25 (ATA) - Albania's president Rexhep Meidani praised the improved climate of bilateral relations, which will serve as a model of cooperation for the whole region, in a meeting on Wednesday with the FYROM Defence minister Kitanovski, press and information office at the presidency said.

Meidani evaluated the cooperation between the defence ministries of the two countries both in bilateral and Euro Atlantic partnership. He pointed out that the region's integrating policy should include inter regional cooperation in the fight against contraband.

Regarding the Kosova problem, president Meidani said that long-term and perspective solutions should represent a new balance established after Yugoslavia's dissolution.

"Present reality and balance cannot be that of 1974 when the republics of Slovenia, Croatia, Macedonia and Bosnia-Herzegovina were part of the Yugoslav Federation," Meidani said.

He said that a full self-rule within the Yugoslav Federation would have been a realistic resolution to a concept of long-term democratic solution.

Meidani appreciated the existence of a possibility between the Albanian and Macedonian states for a further progress and an emancipated concept in resolving regional problems.

Minister Kitanovski conveyed the evaluation of the Macedonian government for very good relations between the two countries and added that the future visit of president Meidani in Skopje would further complete this framework. ake/mima/ak/

[07] Albania denies infiltration of people, armaments into FRY

TIRANA, March 25 (ATA) - By A. Haxhiu: Albania's Foreign Ministry issued a statement on Wednesday calling untrue a statement of the Serbian Interior Ministry that said that 30 armed terrorists coming from Albania had provoked the war in Decan.

"We repeat the Albanian government's commitment not to allow any kind of people or arms traffic from Albania to the Federation Republic of Yugoslavia (FRY)," the statement said.

"The Albanian-Yugoslav border has been monitored by international organisations such as the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which has not noted any illegal border crossing. Albania has been and is still open to any kind of international cooperation on that," it said.

The statement, expressing Albania's concern on the escalation of Serbian military actions in other regions of Kosova, said that the Albanian government was for a peaceful solution to the Albanian issue in Kosova through a dialogue between Belgrade and Prishtina with the mediation of an international side.

"Senior officials of the Albanian government are invited as a side on Wednesday's meeting of the Contact Group in Bonn, which is expected to adopt important decisions on Kosova, precisely for the European right, constructive and civilised stands," the statement said. ake/mima/ak/

[08] Parliamentary foreign commission asks to be informed on Kosova

TIRANA, March 25 (ATA) - By Keida Kostreci: Foreign commission of the Albanian parliament asked on Wednesday the Albanian prime minister Fatos Nano that they wanted to be informed on the diplomatic efforts of the Albanian government concerning the situation in Kosova and the Contact Group meeting, which was underway in Bonn.

Albania' prime minister was invited to attend the Bonn meeting.

Sabri Godo, head of the commission expressed his remarks for the fact that Nano did not consult the commission on Albania's stand concerning Kosova.

Referring to the remarks, head of the Socialist parliamentary group Pandeli Majko said to ATA on Wednesday that the parliament had approved a resolution on Kosova and the government's stand was often expressed in parliament.

"I do not see any divergence of views between the government and the political parties on the Kosova issue and even the Democratic leader Sali Berisha has agreed with the actions of the Albanian government," Majko said.

He said that Nano's presence in Bonn marked Albania's turn from a passive into an active factor on the Kosova issue. mima/ak/
