  • [01] CLASSICAL WRESTLING (JUNIORS) CHAMPIONSHIP HELD

    VLORE, SEPT. 19 (ATA) - By H Koci: The national championship of classical wrestling for ages 17-21 was held last Thursday and Friday in Vlore.

    The first place in the 17 year age group was taken by Flamurtari with 24 points.

    In the events of the age group up to 21 took part six teams, Olimpic, Partizani, Beslidhja, Perparimi, Flamurtari and Tomorri and the team of Tomorri was declared champion with 19 points.

    Vlora is the city which was mostly affected by the unrest following the failure of the pyramid investment schemes at the beginning of this year. This championship is one of the first sport events after the earlier parliamentary elections of June 29, in which SP won the majority of votes. kei/xh/sh/

    TIRANE, SEPT. 20 (ATA) - "We will allow nobody to bring the country back to chaos and anarchy," writes Zeri i Popullit today regarding the extraordinary meeting of Prime Minister Fatos Nano with socialist deputies and ministers. The newspaper writes about the news conference of the World Bank representative in Tirane, Carlos Elbirt, under the title "We see with sympathy the measures the new government is adopting." "The most dramatic event in the Parliament must not serve to divide the Albanians further, but on the contrary it is a signal of alarm that we must unite in front of the antinational plans of Berisha to destabilize the country," stresses the newspaper under the title "To whom do the calls of Berisha serve?" "Nano meets Austrian former Chancellor Franz Vranitzky in Zurich," writes this paper.

    "Strong protests in many cities of Albania against the attempted assassination of deputy Azem Hajdari, a clear work of the power of violence and the bands," writes Rilindja Demokratike under the title "The criminal powerholders must leave!" "Through civic protests and our resistance we shall win soon. We shall bring democracy again in Albania along with the freedoms violated by the present government. We shall govern Albania without gangs and committees and will restore calm to the country," cites the newspaper the democrat leader Berisha, under the title "Resignation of the Nano-Gjinushi-Dokle clique demanded." The editor-in-chief of the newspaper Bulevard, Bejdo Malaj barbarously beaten, writes the paper in the third page. The newspaper carries a declaration of the Journalist League of Albania under the title "Stop to violence against reporters."

    "The right wing in face of neocommunist agony," writes newspaper Republika in its editorial entitled "Political process blocked." "Charges for Berisha in the Prosecutor's office," writes the newspaper in its second page. Referring to sources of the Prosecutor's office the newspaper reports that "the indictment was ready yesterday to be sent to Prosecutor's Office against the leaders of the rally in the Scanderbeg square motivated as support for deputy Hajdari." "Albanian coalition and the opposition in the lead of DP have rapidly embraced the extremes," writes the newspaper under the title "A Political or Ordinary Crime?" In the economic page, the paper carries an article "WB: Urgently the law on the money-laundering."

    Under the title "Berisha: We do not want new elections!" newspaper Koha Jone covers yesterday's news conference of the Union for Democracy.

    "The developments in the recent months are showing that Berisha is unable to orientate his party towards becoming a modern and above all efficient opposition," writes the paper in an editorial entitled "Berisha, a grave stone on DP."

    "Albanian Prime Minister uses strong tones in the parliamentary group meeting," writes the paper under the title "Nano: the irresponsible out of SP." "The oriental Berisha and the occidental Nano," writes the paper in its fourth page. "What does definitively compromises the political archaism of Berisha is the 'Nano' phenomenon," writes the paper. "The World Bank keeps silence about loan taking phenomenon," writes the newspaper in its economic page.

    "The state hurries to hide out political crime" is the title of an editorial in newspaper Albania. "The state of crime runs crazily to manipulate the process of crime towards the deputy symbol of Albanian democracy," writes the editorial. "Hajdari tells about the attempt on his life," writes the newspaper in its third page. "In the last moment I challenged death," the paper cites Hajdari.

    "Albania is again on foot, against criminal Prime Minister Fatos Nano," writes the newspaper under the title, "Albania on foot: Nano step down!" "Albania in the tentacles of political crime," writes the newspaper in its fourth page under the headline "A state power which comes through blood can be held only through blood."

    "Resignation of Prime Minister Nano demanded," writes the newspaper with regard to yesterday's news conference of the "Union for Democracy." "Reactions continue in Macedonia after the completion of the political trial of Gostivar," writes the newspaper under the title "Attempt to prevent demands of Albanians." "Criminals to be ousted from SP," writes the newspaper in its third page regarding the meeting of the SP parliamentary group yesterday.

    "Berisha quarrels with U.S. Ambassador," writes the newspaper Dita. "Berisha quarrels with Lino, while DP crowd whistles the Ambassador as she leaves," writes the newspaper. "Socialists criticize the president," writes the paper concerning the meeting of the SP parliamentary group held Friday. "New trade bank created" this paper writes in its economic page.

    Gazeta Shqiptare carries an interview with the President of VEFA company, Vehbi Alimucaj, under the title "Alimucaj: Pension for 50 thousand people." "Mazreku upsets SP leader," writes the paper referring to the SP parliamentary group meeting yesterday. "DP protests for the second day," writes this paper. kled/xh/sh/

    [03] FIRST WINNERS OF OXFORD DIPLOMA ANNOUNCED IN ALBANIA

    TIRANE, SEPT. 20 (ATA) - By Flora Nikolla: The first winners of the Oxford University diploma for English language were announced for the first time in Albania during a ceremony on Friday held in the International Centre of Culture in Tirane. "Twenty out of 29 registered for the final course won the diplomas," Jorgji Kote, director of the Oxford Centre in Tirane said to ATA.

    The Oxford Centre in Tirane was inaugurated in October 1996. According to Kote, it publishes about 3000 book titles each year, mainly for English learning.

    The publications in this centre are for all ages and editions of the recent years. The books are offered to state or private schools, together with cassettes and other audio-visual instruments, with exercise books and supplementary editions according to levels.

    The centre has about 10 000 books of this character, of which nearly 50 teaching methods./kled/xh/sh/

    [04] ALBANIANS IN MACEDONIA MUST HAVE THE STATUS THEY DESERVE - Milo

    TIRANE, SEPT. 20 (ATA) - In the context of the Macedonian state, the Albanians must have the status they deserve, said Albanian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paskal Milo, in a meeting he had Friday afternoon with the delegation of the Albanian Democratic Party of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, led by Arber Xhaferri.

    "Albania is interested in an improvement of the relations and we are interested in the opening of border passing points, increase of cooperation between border areas and other steps," said Milo, stressing that the inter-state relations with Macedonia are not separated from the treatment of the Albanians in that republic.

    Minister Milo spoke in the meeting about the need of dialogue and national understanding and for the institutionalisation of bilateral contacts. We may have differences on the road of the country's development but in the national question we aim to be of the same opinion," said Milo. Mr Xhaferri stressed that Albanians in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia are blocked and repressed, a phenomenon which is fraught with the danger of explosions in the future.

    We demand to reopen Albanian-Macedonia dialogue and we are interested to find that mechanism which defends the interests of the Albanians in Macedonia, said Xhaferri. kled/xh/sh/

    [05] PROTOCOL OF COOPERATION BETWEEN ALBANIA AND SPAIN IN JUDICIARY FIELD TO BE SIGNED SOON

    TIRANE, SEPT. 20 (ATA) - A bilateral protocol of cooperation in the field of judiciary between analogous ministries of Spain and France will be signed soon. The protocol will be signed during the coming visit to Albania of the Spanish Minister of Justice, Margarita Mariscal de Gante.

    The protocol was discussed in a meeting of the Albanian Minister of Justice Thimio Kondi with his Spanish counterpart during his two-day-visit to Spain.

    Mr Kondi had also a meeting with the deputy-chairman of the Council of Judiciaries of Spain and with highest ranking authorities of the Spanish prisons.

    The Spanish party expressed its readiness to apply the agreement in the penitentiary field, signed in 1996, concerning the Spanish assistance for Albanian system of prisons. ake/kled/xh/sh/

    [06] AN ALBANIAN PEACE-KEEPING UNIT LEAVES FOR GERMANY

    TIRANA, SEPT. 20 (ATA) - By Th. Thanasi: A contingent of the peacekeeping unit of the Albanian army for Bosnia-Herzegovina will leave on Saturday for Germany.

    The ceremony organised early today in the premises of the Army's Culture Center was attended by General Chief of Staff Brigadier General Aleks Andoni, presidency's adviser for the army Brigadier General Fiqiri Canaj, ambassador of Bosnia-Herzegovina to Tirana Muharrem Zejnullahu and the military attaches of Italy and China.

    This is the third mission for the peace-keeping company, which will participate in peacekeeping operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina in cooperation with Euro Atlantic structures.

    The company includes 35 military staffs, 20 of whose are soldiers, the unit's commander Lieutenant colonel Vladimir Qiriasi said.

    Forty percent of the new Albanian peacekeeping unit incorporated in the Sfor company for German security are new soldiers and the company will go to Germany for a month to be familiarised with the character of the mission and then leave for Bosnia-Herzegovina. kled/ak/

    [07] SME'S PAID OFF CREDITS ARE RECYCLED

    The are 2,6 million ECU in stored by PHARE program for Small and Medium Enterprises (SME), at the Savings Bank credits' sector, which awaits the green light to assist these activities, for 1997-98 period.

    Some 60 new business projects will profit from the fund," told Albanian Telegraphic Agency, a specialist from the Savings Bank.

    Though the work was suspended due to the unrest in Albania during March period, SME staff has constantly examined citizens' project plans.

    "Positive signs on the part of business projects, we notice at the normal pace of many production activities, supported by the PHARE program second credit installment, worth one million ECU," said Ilir Rembeci, manager of SME for Tirana city.

    Among successful projects is milk processing factory, in Sukth, which besides the turn out of 4000 litres per day, is planning to expand its activity.

    Alongside the amount of 2,6 million ECU, SME business progress will be boosted due to the increase of the fund from the first credit phase pay off. The recycling of this fund will promote other businesses.

    [08] ALBANIAN ISSUE BE RESOLVED IN ACCORDANCE WITH STANDARDS OF PEOPLES' RIGHTS - Albanian president

    TIRANA, SEPT. 20 (ATA) - President of Albania Rexhep Meidani presented on Saturday to a group of officials from the Democratic party of Albanians in Macedonia the views of the new Albanian state saying that the Albanian issue should be solved in accordance with the European and international standards of the peoples' rights.

    The visiting delegation, headed by the party leader Arben Xhaferri praised the idea "of a national assembly under the supervision of the Albanian Academy of Science," as an option to bring closer the politics of the Albanian parties in and out of Albania for a right solution to the Albanian issue. ssh/kei/ak/k

    [09] ONE SIXTH OF ARMS COLLECTED SINCE OPERATION FOR DISARMAMENT BEGAN

    ELBASAN, SEPT. 20 (ATA)-By P. Zekthi, One sixth of the total number of weapons in the hands of the population has been collected since the police began the disarmament operation, after the formation of the new government.

    This was confirmed Saturday by Interior Minister Ceka at a meeting of the Elbasan Prefecture Administrative Council, where he was invited by Prefect Durim Hushi, to discuss problems of public order.

    "Despite the latest achievements, the situation is still serious in the districts of Elbasan and Gramsh," said the prefecture inspector, Fatos Suveria, speaking of the situation of public order in the districts of the Elbasan prefecture.

    After the collapse of pyramid schemes in Albania in which many Albanians lost their life savings, angry people raided army depots and seized weapons.

    Many people, also including children, have been killed because of mishandling these weapons and because of revenge. s.sh/kei/lm/k

    [10] FOREIGN MINISTER TO ATTEND U.N. SESSION

    TIRANA, SEPT. 20 (ATA)- Albanian Foreign Minister Paskal Milo left for New York today to take part in the proceedings of the 52nd Session of the United Nations.

    The spokesman of this ministry reports that during the proceedings of this session Milo will hold a series of meetings with his counterparts and senior authorities of various states. s.sh/lm/k

    [11] ARREST ORDER ISSUED FOR FORMER DEPUTY MAZREKU

    TIRANA, SEPT 20 (ATA)- By M. Hodo, The Tirana court on Saturday issued the arrest order for former socialist deputy Gafurr Mazreku, who shot and injured with a pistol the deputy of Democratic Party, Azem Hajdari, on Thursday.

    Mazreku is accused of "attempted murder".

    The defendant accepted the accusation leveled at him by Prosecutor Pirro Kozo.

    On Thursday, at around 12.00, Azem Hajdari, deputy of the Democratic Party, was shot five times with a pistol by Mazreku just inside the assembly building, causing him four bullet wounds.

    On the same day, at a special session, the Albanian parliament unanimously lifted Mazreku's Parliamentary immunity.

    Hajdari is out of life-threatening danger. kei/lm/k

    [12] PROSECUTOR SAYS MAZREKU ENTERED ATA AS HE DID NOT KNOW WHEREABOUTS OF COMMISSARIATS

    TIRANA, SEPT 20 (ATA)- By M. Hodo, Former deputy Gafurr Mazreku entered ATA, after shooting Democratic Party deputy Azem Hajdari, as he did not know the whereabouts of the Tirana Police Commissariats, Prosecutor Pirro Koco told ATA.

    Mazreku, who is from Has, a Northern town of Albania, has confessed he does not know Tirana, Central Albania.

    After running away from Parliament, where he shot Hajdari, Mazreku stopped first at the building of the Formerly Persecuted Association, very near the People's Assembly building.

    Afterwards, he saw the policeman on guard at ATA's entrance (less than 400 metres from parliament" and entered inside the building showing his deputy card.

    After the announcement of the ATA workers, the Police Commissariat 1 rushed to ATA and arrested Mazreku.

    Leaders of the Democratic Party have politically motivated Mazreku's entering ATA.
