  • [01] ALBANIAN PRESIDENT HOLDS TALKS WITH ITALIAN DEFENCE MINISTER

    TIRANA, AUGUST 9 (ATA) - President of the Republic Prof Dr Rexhep Meidani had a meeting on Friday with the Italian Defence Minister Beniamino Andreata, who arrived in Albania to attend a ceremony marking the end of the mission of multinational defence forces.

    President Meidani thanked the Italian minister for the assistance of the Italian authorities to Albania to overcome the crisis and restore normality.

    Meidani considered bilateral support, Italian contribution to the Donors conference and arrival of special military units after the withdrawal of Alba forces an evident proof of closed and friendly relations between Albania and Italy. He also expressed understanding for the Italian people which bore the economic burden of this aid.

    President Meidani underlined Italy's role as a community country for the further integration of Albania in all Euro Atlantic structures.

    Assuring President on Italy's total support and especially in the military field, Andreata expressed belief that at the end of this year, the structures of the re-dimensioned armed forces will be totally able to control order and security in Albania, thus creating favourable conditions for a complete normalisation of the economic life.

    President Meidani and Minister Andreata praised as totally accomplished the creation of join multilateral military units according to known models in the framework of Partnership for Peace, which will add the elements of cooperation and security in the region. ake/kei/ak/k

    [02] ALBANIAN PRIME MINISTER MEETS ITALIAN DEFENCE MINISTER

    TIRANA, AUGUST 9 (ATA) - Albanian Prime Minister Fatos Nano had a meeting on Friday afternoon with the Italian Defence Minister Beniamino Andreatta, who attended the ceremony marking the end of the mission of multinational defence forces.

    Prime minister Nano and minister Andreatta considered this mission fulfilled and the lowering of their flag in Albania as the end of the emergency phase and start of cooperation.

    Nano stressed in the meeting that the Italian-Albanian cooperation includes a wide range issues, with defence occupying an important place. Your visit, he said, testifies that the Rome decisions are already being concrete. The international community, he said, will help not only Albania's revival but also giving it a place and role it merits.

    Italy has played and is playing an important role in this process, Nano said.

    The meeting stressed that Italy and Albania are developing and will develop their cooperation in a wider context of initiatives NATO has undertaken in the framework of Partnership for Peace to help the Albanian armed forces.

    This fact, Nano said, makes your visit in Albania more meaningful. It shows that Italy and Albania will put into practice the wide program of cooperation, with defence issues occupying an important place.

    Andreatta, expressing satisfaction for the reception and wishing Nano for his high post, underlined the fact that the Albanian government is asserting itself in its daily concrete and determined activity. He expressed Italy's determination to continue bilateral cooperation based on the agreements already reached.

    Andreatta underlined the fact that conditions are created for the Italian military mission to start the activity for technical-military cooperation and assistance for armed forces and that experts will start work on August 11.

    The meeting also dealt with other problems of Albanian-Italian cooperation and expressed their common will to fulfil it on the bases of decisions taken during the last visit in Rome of the Prime Minister Fatos Nano. ake/ak/k

    [03] ALBANIAN DEFENCE MINISTER MEETS HIS ITALIAN COUNTERPART

    TIRANA, AUGUST 8 (ATA) - Italian Defence minister Beniamino Andreatta, who attended the ceremony marking the end of the Alba mission in Albania, was received at the Albanian Defence Ministry with a military ceremony.

    Then, the two Defence Ministers Sabit Brokaj and Beniamino Andreatta had a special meeting attended by the Secretary of State for Defence Policy, Perikli Teta and chief of the General Staff, Major General Adem Copani. General Venturoni, chief of the Italian military headquarters was also present.

    The meeting focused on the importance of bilateral cooperation and its advantage in the framework of the multilateral relations with NATO.

    It stressed the need that groups of experts of both sides continue their work for the cooperation between Albania and Italy. pas/ak/k

    [04] ALBANIAN-AMERICAN BANK CORPORATION TO OPERATE IN ALBANIA

    TIRANA, AUGUST 9 (ATA) - By A. Keko: Supervising Council of the Bank of Albania decided in its meeting on Friday to give a preliminary approval to the Albanian-American Bank Corporation to act as a bank in the Republic of Albania.

    The press office of the Governor of the Bank of Albania said that this decision was based on a request of the Albanian-American Fund of Enterprises, as the only share holder of this bank. This Fund has been operating in Albania since 1995 as an independent fund of investments to back the economic development.

    The Albanian-American Fund of Enterprises started the application procedures to gain a licence for a bank in Albania in 1996. It will be a private bank with an initial capital three million dollars and 10 million dollars capital signed.

    The Albanian-American Corporation will have its center in Tirana and will operate as a universal bank, with a very selected leading staff and detailed and studied business plans. ake/pas/ak/k

    [05] MALTREATMENTS OF ALBANIAN CITIZENS CONTINUE IN KOSOVA

    PRISHTINE, AUG 9 (ATA-KCI) - With regard to the incident that occurred some days ago in the road Podujeve-Kerpimeh, the Serbian inspectors interrogated Albanian citizens, some of them were physically maltreated.

    The Serbian police interrogated Admir Kamberi from Metohia, who was physically maltreated in the police station of Podujeve, and the aid of the doctor was requested. The same thing also happened to Abdullah Ismajli, while the other persons were ordered to come again in the police station. /ag/mt/sh/

    [06] SP, THE MAIN POLITICAL FORCE WHICH WILL GENERATE AND SUPPORT THE INTEGRATION OF ALBANIA INTO EUROPE - from meeting of SP General Leading Council -

    TIRANA, AUG 9 (ATA) - By Eva Allushi: The meeting of the Leading Council of the Albanian Socialist Party, started on Saturday by midday, which will define the future position of this political force and will conclude its relations with the electorate.

    The SP chairman, Fatos Nano, said in the opening address that a further discipline is requested, clear and political functional of the SP activity. "Together, he continued, we will undertake institutional responsibilities, divided with the new opposition."

    Nano analysed the post electoral situation, opening way to the debate and discussion in the meeting, which continues.

    Further on, some procedures of elections and replacements will be carried out, which become necessary in this stage for the Socialist Party to move towards the National Conference of November, which is approved.

    Nano stressed that "we will keep our party alive, responsible and efficacious, in the most contemporary understanding of the word, as the main political force which will generate and support the process of Albania's integration in Europe." /a.ke/kled/mt/sh/

    [07] PRESIDENT OF ALBANIA DECORATES A COMMANDO BRIGADE WITH "GOLDEN MEDAL OF EAGLE"

    TIRANE, AUGUST 9 (ATA) - On occasion of the decoration by the President of Albania Prof Dr Rexhep Meidani with the "Golden Medal of Eagle" of a Commando Brigade, the Minister of Defence Sabit Brokaj, the State Secretary for Defence Policy, Perikli Teta, the chief of the Army General Staff, General Major Adem Copani, the military adviser of the Albanian President, Brigade General, Fiqiri Cenaj paid a visit to that unit. Guests in that ceremony were also former militaries in reserve and released who have made their contribution to that Special Unit.

    Minister Brokaj greeted the effective of the unit, stressing that the military unit of commandos was protected from ruin with bravery.

    For this reasonm, the President of Albania accorded the Commando Brigade "The Golden Medal of Eagle" with the inscription "For courageous activity and high alert in carrying out the tasks to protect the objects of special importance and its premises during the state of emergency." Minister Brokaj placed the Medal in the Flag of the Unit.

    The State Secretary, Teta, handed over the Golden Medal of Eagle to the parents and family of the officer of that brigade, first captain Nuredin Gorce, who fell while carrying out his duty. Brokaj and Teta placed a wreath on the Memorial in the spot where the officer died.

    High army authorities followed an exercise which demonstrated the possible aspects how to solve the tasks that these troops might be charged with for the defence of the homeland. ake/kled/xh/sh/

    [08] KOSOVA, THIRD REPUBLIC, INTERESTING POSSIBILITY AND WILL BE EXAMINED - HOLBROOKE - according to "Koha ditore" paper -

    PRISHTINE, AUG 9 (ATA) - In the meeting held Friday in Belgrade with the representatives of the Kosova Albanians, Richard Holbrook stressed that "Kosova is and will continue to be in the interest of the U.S. policy. On the other side, Gelbard, U.S. special envoy in former Yugoslavia, stressed during this meeting that "the Kosova question is followed attentively and will have priorities in the U.S. foreign policy."

    According to "Koha ditore" newspaper of Prishtine, the deputy chairman of the Kosova Democratic League, dr. Fehmi Agani told the senior representatives of USA that "the Albanians are encouraged by the U.S. engagement regarding the Kosova question."

    The chairman of the Kosova Committee of Helsinki, Gazmend Pula, has demanded the conduct of an international conference for the issue of Kosova. He has stressed the possibility to harmonize the requests of Albanians for self-reliance with the international stand not to change the borders through violence. "The request of Albanians for self-reliance could be harmonized with this stand, even in the meaning of the federalization of Yugoslavia, in the framework of which, along with Serbia and Monte Negro, Kosova would have the statute of the third republic," stressed Pula.

    With regard to this, Holbrooke confessed that "the last is an interesting possibility and will put it forward for examination." /b.j/p.ta/mp/kled/mt/sh/

    [09] ALBANIAN PRESIDENT MEETS WITH PRESIDENCY OF NATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE VETERANS ORGANIZATION OF LANC

    TIRANE, AUGUST 9 (ATA) - President of Albania Prof. Dr. Rexhep Meidani today met in his seat with the Presidency of the Organization of the LANC Veterans of the Albanian people, Albanian President's press and information office reports.

    In the name of about 50 thousand members of the organization, its chairman Piro Dodbiba handed over to the President a message of greeting, which wrote among others:

    "Your address to the parliament was a solemn pledge which aroused great hopes in everyone, because you will accomplish correctly the highest state function as a symbol of the unity of Albanian nation and that you will know to keep your position on the political parties, placing above everything the highest interests of the homeland and people, reconciliation and national unity, consensus and tolerance, understanding and cohabitation of our people, despite the political, religious and regional preferences."

    The spirit of the great national reconciliation expects the contribution of every Albanian, stressed Mr Meidani, who considered the national unity as a continuous integration and understanding all social groupings.

    Representatives of the veterans exchanged opinions with the President on problems of concern for the organization.

    The veterans promised Mr Meidani they would not stop their efforts to contribute to the great process of national reconciliation to the benefit of Albania. ake/kled/xh/sh/

    [10] MEETINGS OF ALBANIAN PRESIDENT

    TIRANA, AUG 9 (ATA) - The Ambassador of Egypt, Attia Karam, in the meeting with the Albanian President, Rexhep Meidani, conveyed to him the message of greetings from the president of Egypt Hosni Mubarak.

    President Meidani asked the Egyptian ambassador to convey to President Mubarak the thanks and the will of the Albanian authorities to strengthen the traditional relations and the cooperation in all the fields.

    Meidani appreciated as very important the economic cooperation and the aid to overcome the difficulties in the country, and asked support for the Albanian question in the international arena.

    Ambassador Karam assured President Meidani for the personal engagement and of his country to strengthen the relations and the economic, cultural and scientific exchanges, as well as to promote the parliamentary and governmental cooperation between both countries.

    President Meidani met on the same day with the charge d'affaires of Croatia in Albania, Romeo Deponte, who conveyed to Mr Meidani, along with the message, the warm wishes of the Croatian President, Tudjman.

    During the meeting President Meidani confirmed the will of the Albanian authorities for cooperation and was interested in the situation, regional cooperation, support for the solution of the Kosova issue and stressed the adoption of international obligations throughout the territory of former Yugoslavia for the creation of a new climate in the region.

    The President of the Republic met Friday with the Chairman of the Republican Party, Sabri Godo, who wished Meidani on behalf of his party and later they exc hanged thoughts regarding different issues of the situation in Albania.

    President Meidani met on Friday with the Minister of Education of Kosova, Muhamet Bicaj.

    Bicaj informed Meidani on the situation of education in Kosova.

    In the meeting they also discussed about the possibilities of exchanges and cooperation in this field. /a.ke/kled/mt/sh/

    [11] CHANGES IN THE PRESIDENCY OF THE LEADING COUNCIL OF SOCIALIST PARTY OF ALBANIA

    TIRANE, AUGUST 9 (ATA) - By Eva Allushi: Important changes have been made in the Presidency of the SP Leading Council due to the fact that some of the present leaders are engaged in Albania's governing duties.

    The new SP Secretary General will be Pandeli Majko, Secretary for Public Relations will be Musa Ulqini and Organizational Secretary will be Petro Koci, after the withdrawal Namik Dokle from this task.

    The post of Mr Rexhep Meidani as member of the Presidency was taken by Mr Bashkim Fino. The number of the Presidency members will also change from 15 to 21.

    In a meeting held today, referring to the philosophy of the SP governing, Nano stressed that after June 29 elections, SP has started and is realising a qualitative change.

    Nano stressed that the new powerholders will implement the philosophy of integration and not of exception, of political coexistence, understanding and national reconciliation.

    Referring to the DP governing in the past years, he said that the Albanian right wing as an old one, came to power and failed. Therefore, said Nano, "we have the chance not to repeat their mistakes." ake/kled/xh/sh/
