TIRANA, DEC 11 (ATA) - Albanian Foreign Minister Tritan Shehu said in the regular meeting of the Council of Northern Atlantic Cooperation, in Brussels, that the Albanian government considers the Atlantic Alliance and the partnership with it a fundamental element for the strategy of national security.

Shehu stressed in his speech that "Albania considers the integration into NATO not simply a mean of improving its security for the moment, but also an epochal long term change which will definitely involve the Albanian country and society into the course of European integrating processes", the spokesman of the Foreign Ministry reports.

Shehu shared the thought that the enlargement of the Alliance in the Balkans is an important contribution to put strong basis of long term security in the region.

With regard to the political and security situation in the region, Albanian Foreign Minister said that Albania is trying to follow an active and resolute policy to guarantee peace, strengthen stability, consolidate democratic reforms, deepen human rights, and cooperate with people of the region.

[11] ONLY 2 PER CENT OF CRIMES IN GREECE COMMITTED BY ALBANIANS

TIRANA, DEC 12 (ATA) - The crimes by foreigners, concretely by Albanians, in Greece was only 2 per cent of the total, according to a study made this year by the Chair of Crime at the Athens University, cited by BBC.

About 1 500 Albanian nationals in Greece have been arrested in the recent years for various penal acts, a BBC commentary says, citing Greek official sources. But there are scores of Albanians among 250-300 thousand Albanian emigrants presently in Greece, who are victims of killings and theft and the authors are not in every case their compatriots, as the local press frequently claims, the BBC said.

According to it, four employees of a private security company who were guarding a villa in Athens' suburbs, recently rushed into the home of 6 Albanian emigrants, took from there 180 thousand drachmas, then tied and took them to the villa they had to guard, and called police saying that they had caught the Albanians while trying to steal the villa. Police were not convinced by the claim of the Greek security workers, who later accepted their guiltiness. Now they are arrested and expected to be tried.

The unbridled propaganda initialled by the government of the New Democracy by mid-1993 was zealously amplified by the Greek media, and every theft or killing in Greece was attributed to the so-called Albanian mafia.

Two days ago too, the news for a villa of a local businessmen which was stolen was transmitted by some TV channels which also named the authors by their nationality. This fact caused the indignation of the victim of the theft, who immediately protested to these reports. "We do not know and did not say that the theft was made by Albanians," stressed in his written protest the Greek citizen, cited by BBC. kled/xh/sh/

In this context, Arbnori thanked the Egyptian senior authorities for the support for Albania in the international arena.
