[04] MUTUAL CONFIDENCE ESTABLISHED BETWEEN ALBANIA AND GREECE - leader

TIRANA, SEPT. 3 (ATA) - The leader of the Human Rights Union party (HRUP) commenting on the visit of Foreign Minister of Greece Theodoros Pangalos to Albania said to the daily Rilindja Demokratike that mutual confidence has been established between Albania and Greece and any suspicion existing before has been dispersed.

HRUP is a political force which supports mainly the Greek minority in Albania. Its leader Melo has accompanied Pangalos in his first visit to the South of Albania.

The improvement of relations between Albania and Greece was noticed immediately after the visit of the Greek president Costis Stefanoupoulos to Albania in March this year. This visit was followed by the ratification of a treaty of friendship and cooperation by the Albanian parliament, visit to Athens of the former foreign minister Alfred Serreqi and the opening of three classes in Greek language in Gjirokastra, Delvina and Saranda a month ago.

Melo said that the good relations between Albanians and Greeks, two ancient peoples in the Balkans, have always been a peace and stability factor in the region.

"I am convinced that today there exists the wish and goodwill of both sides to promote friendship and cooperation. Our peoples and governments are totally conscious that the interests and motives which link them are of priority and determining character," Melo said.

Melo called the forthcoming visit of President Sali Berisha to Greece "an event of special importance." pas/ak/sh/
