TIRANA, AUGUST 4 (ATA) - By S Sharrexhi: The clock tower in Tirana, a cultural monument for its construction, architectural and historical values, upon a special decision by the Tirana municipality, is now on also a center to be visited by local and foreign people.

This important step for the Tirana tradition was marked with a ceremony held yesterday near the tower. The address on the occasion was submitted by the director of museums of Tirana, Ramiz Xhani. The door of this historical monument, closed for years, was opened due to the valuation by democracy of the history of the clock tower, of the history with rich traditions of the territory and the patriotism of Tirana, he said.

Those present in the ceremony, among whom deputy of DP Fadil Kepi, the director of culture of the Municipality Burhan Kaceli, the chairman of honour of Tirana Association Dr Shefqet Ndroqi, and others visited the Clock Tower.

The tower, 40 meters high, which started to be constructed in 1822 by the best Tirana and Golloborda builders, upon the initiative of Haxhi Et'hem Beu and also helped by Tirana citizens, was completed in 1830.

Along its height the tower has small windows for protection, airing and light to go inside. The foundation of the tower is 4.7 x 4.7 meters, so going into its interior is quite easy. kled/xh/sh/
