[01] ERDOGAN CALLS ON WORLD TO PROMOTE SOCIAL JUSTICE TO FIGHT TERRORISMPrime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday made a call for the international community to ensure social justice in order to attain “the happiness and prosperity of nations.” Addressing the United Nations General Assembly in New York, Erdogan urged the UN to seek solutions for ending the suffering of humanity. Calling terrorism the “enemy of all humanity,” Erdogan proposed ending poverty and strengthening democracy and freedom to end the rise in global terrorism. /Sabah/[02] SEZER INVITES POPE TO VISIT TURKEY NEXT YEARA new invitation for Pope Benedict XVI to visit Turkey in 2006 has defused a potentially sticky situation. President Ahmet Necdet Sezer invited the pope to pay an official visit to Turkey next year. In this way, a planned visit for November, which had let to concern in Ankara over inflaming debates on the status of the Fener Greek Patriarchate, was postponed. Foreign Ministry spokesman Namik Tan said, “The invitation was forwarded to officials through the Turkish Embassy at the Vatican.” /Milliyet/[03] ERDOGAN TOUTS TURKEY TO UN INVESTORSWhile attending the UN World Summit and having bilateral meetings on political issues this week, economic issues have constituted the bulk of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s schedule. Erdogan and his delegation yesterday had breakfast with American investors at the office of UBS, one of the US’ most prominent investment banks. Erdogan invited the investors to put their money in Turkey. At a luncheon hosted by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, the economy was discussed and Erdogan, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and Russian President Vladimir Putin talked about the opening date of the Blue Stream Natural Gas Pipeline. The three leaders decided that an opening ceremony would be held in the first half of November. /Star/[04] EU DISCUSSIONS HELD DURING NEW YORK SUMMITForeign Minister Abdullah Gul, who has been attending the UN summit in New York along with the prime minister, is also having bilateral meetings. Gul is attending all of the premier’s meetings, but is also seeing his counterparts. Gul yesterday met with Netherlands Prime Minister Bernard Bot. Turkey’s bid for membership in the European Union was the main theme of the meeting. The two diplomats talked about Turkey’s upcoming negotiation process. In the meantime Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan met with Romanian President Traian Basescu. Gul and State Minister Mehmet Aydin accompanied Erdogan. /Star/[05] PARLIAMENT TO HOLD EXTRAORDINARY SESSION ON MONDAYParliament Speaker Bulent Arinc yesterday decided to convene Parliament for an extraordinary session on Monday at the request of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP). Parliament will gather on Monday afternoon to discuss the recent rise of uneasiness in the country. Speaking to reporters, CHP spokesman Kemal Anadol called on all parties to engage Turkey’s terrorism problem, adding that Parliament couldn’t wait even another hour to deal with the issue. On the other hand, rejecting the call for an extraordinary session, ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AKP) deputy group speaker Salih Kapusuz told reporters that the timing of the gathering was completely wrong. “Just one week before summer recess ends doesn’t make sense,” he added. /Turkiye/[06] US COMMITTEE APPROVES ARMENIAN RESOLUTIONSThe International Relations Committee of the US House of Representatives yesterday passed two resolutions affirming the so-called Armenian genocide allegations. The resolutions, which are expected to reach the House floor, urge commemoration of the anniversaries of the so-called genocide by the US and call on the president to take into consideration the Armenian genocide allegations in setting foreign policy. Supporting the resolutions, committee head Rep. Henry Hyde stated that he didn’t believe that the resolutions would harm relations with Turkey. /Turkiye/[07] EU MEDIA: “THE TURKISH VOTE MAY SAVE SCHROEDER”Three days before closely fought general elections in Germany, some 600,000 Turks in the country are expected to support Social Democratic Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder and his coalition partner the Greens. Recent articles in newspapers in Europe argued that the Turkish vote could decide the fate of the elections. /Turkiye/[08] RISING CHROUS: “TURKEY WILL BEGIN ITS EU TALKS”In the runup to Oct. 3, the date Turkey is scheduled to begin accession talks with the European Union, German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer in an opinion piece in German daily Bild yesterday defended his government’s policy on Turkey. He warned that excluding Turkey from the Union would be both reckless and irresponsible. In addition, in a piece written for German daily Die Welt, British Foreign Minister Jack Straw also lent support to Turkey’s EU membership. France’s Le Figaro daily also said yesterday that there was no technical problem remaining to begin talks with Turkey. /Aksam/[09] FROM THE COLUMNS… FROM THE COLUMNS… FROM THE COLUMNS…[10] A FAMILIAR STRATEGEM BY SAMI KOHEN (MILLIYET)Columnist Sami Kohen comments on the so-called Armenian genocide and a bill prepared by the Armenian lobby concerning the issue. A summary of his column is as follows:“The Armenian lobby has been doing this for years. The lobby and its supporters always wait for an opportunity to enact a law justifying the claims on the so-called Armenian genocide in the US Congress. First of all, it receives support and interest with a bill it presents to the relevant committees of the House of Representatives. However, when the bill is brought to the House floor, the White House and various branches of the administration become involved in the issue. Finally, the bill is never brought to the floor or fails to get approval. Then a period of silence follows until the lobby and its supporters find a new opportunity and go through the same process. The US House of Representatives International Relations Committee this week considered a bill holding the Ottoman Empire responsible for the Armenian genocide and requesting that the Turkish Republic accept this crime. Actually, it seems unlikely that this bill will be presented to the full House or even approved. However, even if the bill is discussed by the committee and gets great support and interest, this would be a success for the Armenian lobby. If Congress doesn’t make such a final decision, it will be necessary to evaluate the reasons for the Armenian lobby’s success on the US political platform. Generally, people’s reasons for supporting the claims on the so-called Armenian genocide in the US, as in other countries, depends on Turkey’s incompetence in promotion -- in conveying its ideas and influencing public opinion -- against the Armenian diaspora’s advantage of propaganda and influence. It’s a shame that for years we haven’t overcome this. Unfortunately, Turkey is still ineffectual against the propaganda of counter-lobbies in the US. We can’t say that the professional lobbyists working for Turkey are very successful. Likewise, promotion isn’t the only way of getting results in the US and the world generally. The political dimensions of this question are very important. The Armenian lobby’s success in the Congress is related with the atmosphere of the US public’s feelings concerning Turkey, in Turkish-US relations, and among politicians in Washington, and this atmosphere isn’t so bright. Actually, the US Congress has never really gotten over Turkey’s rejection of the deployment of US soldiers before the Iraq invasion in March 2003.
