[01] ERDOGAN TRAVELING TO NEW YORK FOR UN SUMMITPrime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to travel to the US today to attend a United Nations World Summit. The meeting of the heads of state and government is scheduled to begin tomorrow and last for four days. Erdogan is also expected to deliver a speech on Thursday before the UN General Assembly and to hold bilateral meetings during his stay. /Aksam/[02] ERTUGRUL GAZI COMMEMORATEDA festival marking the 724th anniversary of the death of Ertugrul Gazi, father of the first Ottoman sultan, Osman I, was held yesterday in Sogut, Bilecik. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Nationalist Action Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli and Great Unity Party (BBP) leader Muhsin Yazicioglu attended the festival. /Sabah/[03] FM GUL VISITS USTurkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul yesterday went to New York in order to attend the 60th Session of the General Assembly. Gul said that he would meet with foreign ministers of 40 countries and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan during the summit. Gul said that he would express Ankara’s views on recent developments in Iraq, the Middle East and the Cyprus issue. Gul also stated that he would meet with UN Development Program head and former Economy Minister Kemal Dervis. Gul added that as part of his bilateral contacts, he would meet with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. /Star/[04] GUL: “THE VATICAN IS NOT AN EU MEMBER”Asked in a question motion from a deputy how Pope Benedict XVI could influence Turkey’s EU bid and a Muslim country could become an EU member, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, “Pope Benedict’s views expressed before he rose to the papacy do not bind the Vatican. The Vatican is not an EU member. He has taken a more balanced attitude since becoming pope. The pontiff also said that he would contribute to a dialogue between religions.” Recent press reports have said the Benedict wants to visit Turkey. Before becoming pope, then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger expressed negative views on Turkey’s EU bid. /Star/[05] NEW EDUCATION YEAR BEGINS TODAYSome 13.5 million students and 575,000 teachers are taking their places in elementary and high school classrooms today throughout the country after the three-month summer holiday. The first term is scheduled to end on Jan. 9, 2006, and the second on June 12. In related news, in a message issued to mark the beginning of the new education year, President Ahmet Necdet Sezer pointed to the importance of a good education for a healthy society. /Hurriyet/[06] EUROPEAN REFORM CENTER: “TURKEY WILL STRENGTHEN THE EU”Turkey has good relations with the countries in the Balkans, Caucasus, the Middle East and the Central Asia, and will serve not only the military but also the economic interests of the Union, says the European Reform Center, one of the European Union’s leading think-tanks, in a new report on Turkey’s EU membership bid. The report underlines the falsity of claims that membership would harm the EU’s common foreign policy and security. In addition, the report states that Turkey’s growing consumption demand would also contribute to reviving the Union’s economy. /Turkiye/[07] PARLIAMENT SPEAKER ARINC RETURNS TO TURKEYParliament Speaker Bulent Arinc, fresh from attending the Second World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in New York, returned to Turkey yesterday. At Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport, Arinc spoke about his meetings in New York, and added, “Recent street demonstrations in various cities in Turkey have disturbed our citizens, but the government is taking care of these incidents. Revisions to the Anti-Terror Law will not lead to any retreat in terms of freedom.” He added, “The demonstrations which took place in front of the Fatih and Hacibayram mosques are not supported by the people.” /Star/[08] TURKISH RED CRESCENT SENDS AID TO TAL AFARThe Turkish Red Crescent (Kizilay) yesterday sent five trucks of humanitarian aid and communications equipment with 16 personnel to the Iraqi city of Tal Afar. During a ceremony in Ankara before the departure, Red Crescent head Omer Tasli called on all international institutions to aid the people living in the region. Meanwhile, the US operation in Tal Afar aimed at clearing the city of terrorist groups is expected to end before this Thursday. /Turkiye/[09] PKK KILLS FIVE SOLDIERSFive soldiers were killed yesterday during an attack by the militants of the terrorist organization PKK in the southeastern Anatolian cities of Sirnak and Bingol. A large-scale military operation has begun to apprehend the terrorists. The PKK had previously announced a one-month cease-fire on Aug. 20. /Aksam/[10] US’ MCELDOWNEY: “THE US CONDEMNS ALL TERRORISM”In the Kecioren district of Ankara yesterday, a ceremony was held to remember victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the US. Speaking at the gathering US Charge d’Affaires Nancy McEldowney, currently the top diplomat at the US Embassy, pointed to the importance of cooperation against terrorism. “Whether it’s bin Laden or Ocalan, we are here today to send a message to terrorists that Turks and Americans are united against terror,” said McEldowney. /Sabah/[11] FROM THE COLUMNS... FROM THE COLUMNS... FROM THE COLUMNS...[12] US WRIGGLES OUT OF DEALING WITH THE PKK BY TUFAN TURENC (HURRIYET)Columnist Tufan Turenc comments on the US’ stance on the terrorist PKK. A summary of his column is as follows:“Obviously, the US wants to hold the terrorist PKK card in its hands. Therefore, it isn’t willing to be involved in an operation against the PKK, in spite of all the efforts of Turkey. It doesn’t want Turkey to organize an operation either. The US is in a tight spot in Iraq. Whatever you call them, insurgents or terrorists, Washington is in trouble. That’s why it doesn’t want to run the risk of getting involved in the PKK problem. Kurds are opposed to Turkish soldiers’ entering northern Iraq and conducting an operation there. Meanwhile, the US won’t give Turkey a green light in order not to lose its strongest ally in Iraq. Finally, Washington’s negative stance concerning Turkey comes from our Parliament rejecting a US-supported motion before the invasion of Iraq in March 2003. In other words, Washington is taking revenge for this incident. The Bush administration can’t understand the trauma felt by Turkey due to this situation. Therefore, Washington doesn’t understand how criticisms coming from the nation’s anger became enmity towards the US. How long will the anti-US stance last and what will its consequences be? It’s hard to say. However, there is a drift in Turkey towards unwelcome developments. The nation is deeply concerned. Reasonable people living in the southeast who believe that Kurdish nationalism supporting terrorism is terribly misguided are concerned with the developments as well. However, unfortunately, the voice of fanatics is drowning out the voice of the reasonable people, who actually outnumber them. US European Forces Commander Gen. James Jones visited Turkey last week. Listening to his remarks after meetings at the General Staff, one can see that his sole aim is to distract Turkey. Gen. Jones says that the Iraqi government is who Turkey should talk to about a PKK operation. However, that is pure fiction, as Baghdad can’t act outside the US’ directives. The entire world knows that Iraq lacks such power. So, why did the commander visit Turkey? Did he come in order to throw Ankara a bone? However, Turkey already knows terrorism and how to end it. Ankara knows that such distractions are pointless. The US somehow thinks that it can end terrorism by letting terrorist groups in the Middle East survive. This is not a way out, but a grave mistake.” ARCHIVE <script type="text/javascript" language="JavaScript" src="http:/_www.byegm.gov.tr_statistic/countcode.js"> </script> Turkish Press Review Directory - Previous Article - Next Article |
