  • [01] TERROR STRIKES LONDON

Four terrorist bomb explosions hit three underground trains and a double-decker bus in London yesterday, killing at least 33 people and injuring more than 360. British Prime Minister Tony Blair, who was in Scotland for the G-8 summit, returned to Britain following the attacks. A group calling itself al Qaeda Jihad in Europe claimed responsibility for the attacks and threatened to carry out similar attacks in Italy, Denmark and other states which have troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Speaking to journalists with the leaders of the G-8 countries standing behind him, Blair said, "It is through terrorism that the people that have committed these terrible acts express their values and it is right at this moment that we demonstrate ours… We know that these people act in the name of Islam but we also know that the vast and overwhelming majority of Muslims here and abroad are decent and law-abiding people who abhor those who do this every bit as much as we do.” /All papers/

    [02] ERDOGAN CONDEMNS TERRORIST ATTACKS

Following yesterday’s deadly terrorist attacks in London, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is currently attending a conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, in the US, stated that he condemned the attacks. “I would like to express my great sorrow over these attacks,” Erdogan told a press conference. “As you may recall, I emphasized global terrorism on Wednesday and made warnings. These attacks are an offense against all of humanity. As the prime minister and son of a country which has lost 40,000 citizens to terrorism, this is deeply saddening.” Erdogan stated that Turkey had long stressed how terrorism has no particular religion, language, race or nation and that it would continue to point this out. He added that the entire world should come together to work to eradicate the roots of terrorism. /Turkiye/

[03] ERDOGAN URGES MULTINATIONALS TO INVEST IN TURKEY

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan yesterday met with owners and CEOs of companies playing leading roles in the world economy in Sun Valley, Idaho, in the US, during the Sun Valley Conference. During one-on-one meetings, Erdogan called on large multinationals to invest in Turkey. Erdogan spoke about investment opportunities and the advantages of facilities and regions in Turkey for foreigners and invited foreign investors to come. Stating that there were great opportunities for foreign investors, Erdogan said, “Turkey is the right destination for investment. It’s a bridge between Europe and the Balkans, and the Middle East and Asia, and this situation presents attractive opportunities for investors.” Erdogan also requested help in promoting Turkey worldwide. Reportedly, the owners and managers of companies said they were impressed by Erdogan’s presentation and agreed that Turkey was playing an important role in its region. /Turkiye/

[04] GUL DENOUNCES TERRORIST ATTACKS IN LONDON

Speaking on yesterday’s terrorist bombing attacks in London, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, “Before, when we tried to explain how truly dangerous this threat is, the world didn’t show much interest. However, following the Sept. 11 attacks in the US, the world came to understand how dangerous terrorism is.” Stating that no one knows where and how terrorism might strike next and that the threat of terrorism hangs over the entire world, Gul added, “Turkey condemns all terrorism. Turkey always cooperates in the fight against terrorism, because we have suffered enormously from it.” /Turkiye/

    [05] KRETSCHMER: “TERRORISM SHOULD END”

The European Union Joint Consultancy Committee’s 19th meeting started yesterday at the Conrad Hotel. During the meeting also attended by Labor and Social Security Minister Murat Basesgioglu, European Commission Representative to Turkey Hansjoerg Kretschmer said that Turkey should develop a strategy and implement social and economic improvements in the southeastern Anatolia region with the help of the European Union. “Of course, there are increasing problems and terrorist activities, which should certainly be ended,” he said. Kretschmer said that decisions taken concerning the EU’s enlargement should be implemented fully and that Turkey could become a full EU member in 2014. “Considering the work that needs to be done, the date we envisage is between 2014 and 2021. It’s out of the question for Turkey to become an EU member before 2014.” /Milliyet/

[06] AGAR BLAMES AKP GOVERNMENT FOR CONTINUED POVERTY

True Path Party (DYP) leader Mehmet Agar yesterday criticized the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), saying that as a result of the AKP’s government, poverty was on the rise. “If we took poverty to be the result of belt tightening or other problems, we would be mistaken,” added Agar. “Poverty is a problem that has economic and social roots.” Agar also touted a “white tape” campaign to combat poverty organized by the DYP Women’s Branches. /Cumhuriyet/

[07] IMF: “NO BOARD MEETING BEFORE SOCIAL SECURITY LAW IS PASSED”

Stressing that the short-term priorities of the Turkish government should include a social security reform bill, International Monetary Fund First Managing Director Anne Krueger yesterday said that the bill should be passed as soon as Parliament reconvenes on Oct. 1. Krueger added that the IMF had decided to delay the meeting of its Executive Board, which was expected to be held this month, because the social security reform has yet to be approved by the Turkish Parliament. “The IMF expects the bill to be approved as soon as the summer recess ends,” she said. “The social security bill should be passed by the Parliament to complete the first review of the new standby deal covering the total $10 billion loan.” In related news, IMF External Affairs Director Tom Dawson said that a new date would not be set for the board’s Turkey meeting until Parliament approves the social security bill. Concerning the postponement, State Minister Responsible for the Treasury Ali Babacan said, “When Parliament went on recess, we were unable to pass this bill. Our work from now on will focus on goals concerning the next period, when we reach targets as part of the first review, excluding social security reform.” /Sabah/

[08] TOBB CHAIRMAN TOUTS TURKEY’S ECONOMIC SUCCESS

Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodities Exchanges (TOBB) Chairman Rifat Hisarciklioglu yesterday stated that Turkey has seen 25.5% growth over the last three years and that the Turkish private sector made $45 billion in investments last year. “The Turkish private sector caused these three years of continuous growth,” added Hisarciklioglu. “Immediately after the economic crisis in 2001, things began to move. Although all economists expected a period of stagnation, Turkey surprised everybody with its success story.” He added that political stability should be maintained in order not to spoil this success. “Political stability brings economic stability,” added Hisarciklioglu. “During politically stable periods, Turkey has always seen economic growth. In order to focus on early elections, we should focus on Turkey’s economy. Our first item of business should be economic stability.” Hisarcikoglu also recommended that in order to bring down unemployment, government should cut taxes. He added that nearly 40 million people living in Turkey face poverty. /Star/

[09] FROM THE COLUMNS… FROM THE COLUMNS… FROM THE COLUMNS…

[10] NEVER-ENDING WAR BY SAMI KOHEN (MILLIYET)

Columnist Sami Kohen comments on yesterday’s terrorist attacks in London. A summary of his column is as follows:

“Yesterday’s terrorist attacks in London were as frightening as the Sept. 11 attacks or last year’s Madrid attacks. The London incidents showed that no matter how well prepared a country is for possible terrorist attacks, terrorists still might manage to accomplish their evil ends.

Britain has long taken effective measures against terrorism. The British people, who battled the IRA for years, took measures against possible radical Islamic attacks in the wake of Sept. 11. However, even these protective measures failed to prevent yesterday’s incidents. As a matter of fact, it was quite impossible to do so. How could one possibly control thousands of people using the underground in such a huge city as London?

Yesterday’s simultaneous, multi-target explosions may not have been as devastating as those in New York and Madrid. But they still terrorized and caused panic throughout Europe and worldwide.

It is of course no coincidence that the London attacks took place when British Prime Minister Tony Blair was hosting the G-8 summit. The terrorists were trying to punish Blair for cooperating with Bush in the invasion of Iraq. We all know that Al Qaeda and affiliated terrorist groups see both Britain and the US as their enemies, vowing to take revenge for what has happened in Iraq.

The London attacks have shown that terrorists are capable of reaching wherever they want. These groups can organize acts of terrorism anywhere in the world. The question is whether such incidents could change the policies of the governments. In other words, could terrorists reach their goals? They should have learned that this is impossible… On the contrary, these attacks usually incite abhorrence in people and lead governments to take more effective measures and pursue more determined policies.

Of course, the international community cannot consider these attacks justifiable. On the other hand, it is no secret that the latest developments in the Middle East have sparked enmities in the region, creating large frustrated and angry masses which tend to resort to acts of violence. This can only create a deadly spiral of violence, nothing more…

Therefore, the London attacks cannot result in a different path in the days to come. However, terrorists don’t seem to learn lessons from the past. I guess how they’re happy with their victory in London. So things are getting worse… Unfortunately, the world should gird itself for more violence…”
