  • [01] SHARON: "ISRAEL IS PROTECTING HERSELF"

Turkey could not persuade Israel to return to the negotiation table to discuss the halt of the usage of extreme violence inflicted on Palestinians. Visiting Ankara for an official daily visit, Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon met with Prime Minister Bulent Ecevit and Foreign Minister Ismail Cem yesterday. The President Ahmet Necdet Sezer also received him. While Ecevit proposed Sharon to return to the negotiation table, Sharon said, "Arafat must end violence and terror first." Sharon also refused the proposal on sending international observers to the region. Stating that Turkey sympathizes with Israel's sensitivity on the issue of security, Ecevit said, "However, we attach great importance to the peace to be sustained between Palestine and Israel." Meanwhile Sharon said, "No matter how much we want to return to the negotiations, we cannot do so if Palestine does not end violence in the region. We cannot make any concessions from the security of Israel. I believe Turkey would do the same thing under similar conditions." /Cumhuriyet/

    [05] ANAP EXECUTIVE COUNCIL'S STATEMENT

The Motherland Party (ANAP) Executive Council responded to the statement by the Office Of the Chief of the General Staff criticizing the ANAP Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz's statement arguing that national security constituted an obstacle against the democratization process in Turkey. Stating that who he addressed during his speech was the political parties, Yilmaz said in ANAP Executive Council meeting, "We have to discuss this issue. I personally believe that the democratization process can be accelerated and improved without making any concessions from the principle of secular and unitary state. ANAP Administration issued a written statement after the meeting stating that certain comments made by the press resulted in distorted interpretations of Yilmaz's statement. The statement said, "The ANAP Congress is a legal platform where all the problems of our country can be discussed. Our Chairman Yilmaz said in his opening speech of the Congress that wide interpretations of the concept of "national security" constitute an obstacle against Turkey's attempts to enter the EU. His statement did not have any expression targeting a group or people. However, some false interpretations in the press caused new false interpretations by the Turkish Armed Forces. ANAP believes that secularism and territorial integrity are inevitable for Turkey." ANAP members requested Yilmaz to continue to defend his statement by refraining to be offensive against other partners of the government. /Cumhuriyet/

    [06] TUSIAD SUPPORTS YILMAZ

Turkish Industrialists and Businessmen Association (TUSIAD) issued a statement supporting ANAP Chairman Mesut Yilmaz's statement on the concept of national security. Stating that democracy means having a maturity to discuss even the most sensitive issues without causing any crisis or instability in the country, TUSIAD said, "Mr. Yilmaz's statement is a proper attempt to discuss democratic practices in Turkey." TUSIAD stated that everybody was concerned over a new crisis, which might take place on the top of the ruling powers again just after the previous one emerged due to the debates among the state institutions. Stating the success of the economic program highly depended upon the political stability, TUSIAD said, "The stability would only be provided by not hiding the problems but by discussing them. In democratic regimes, every issue can be discussed in every platform." /Cumhuriyet/

Motherland Party (ANAP) made a slight revision within its structure.
