  • [01] YILMAZ'S STATEMENT ON THE KHK

    During his visit to Marshall Campus in the earthquake-hit region in Izmit, Deputy Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz commented on the decree in the force of law (KHK) about dismissal of civil servants which has been re-sent to the Presidential Palace yesterday. He said: "We expect President Sezer to sign the KHK and as a government, we suggest him to do so". Besides, Yilmaz said the services and efforts that the government rendered in the earthquake area region would be made public and that they would publish a book concerning the issue. /Sabah/

    [02] WALKER IN TURKEY

    The US Deputy Secretary of State responsible for the Middle East Edward Walker came to Turkey yesterday to discuss the Middle East peace process with the Turkish officials. Walker met with yesterday Foreign Ministry Deputy Undersecretary in charge of the Middle East desk Ugur Ziyal and other high-level ministry officials, and briefed them on the outcome of the Camp David meetings. During the talks, Palestinian leader Arafat's and Israeli Public Order Minister Ben-Ami's views on the results of the Camp David meetings were evaluated. In addition, United States's mediation role in the peace process was emphasized and the ways towards strenghtening Turkey's role in the Middle East were discussed. Walker will meet with Foreign Minister Ismail Cem today. /Cumhuriyet/

    [03] TURKEY SIGNS THE UN ACCORDS TODAY

    Turkey will sign the United Nations (UN) Individual and Political Rights Accord and UN Social and Cultural Rights Accord today. Turkey's permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Volkan Vural will sign the accords without reservation. By signing these accords, Turkey will recognize the political and cultural rights of the minorities and also accept the right of self-determination. Turkey's signature is interpreted as an important step toward the full European Union membership. /Cumhuriyet/

    [04] MIRZAOGLU IN LONDON

    State Minister Ramazan Mirzaoglu travelled to London to hold talks on the maritime issues with the British officials. Mirzaoglu said that he would will meet with British Minister of Maritime Affairs in London and that they would negotiate on improving the mutual current maritime activities. /Cumhuriyet/

    [05] TURKEY OFFERS COOPERATION TO CENTRAL ASIAN REPUBLICS ON TERRORISM

    In reaction to the spreading violence in the region, defence, interior, and national security ministers from Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan held an emergency meeting in Batken on Saturday. They agreed to cooperate against the threat of terrorism. Meanwhile, diplomatic sources close to the Turkish Foreign Ministry said Turkey shares the same concerns of the Central Asian Republics who have been pressed heavily under the threat of extreme religious terrorism. Diplomatic sources reminded that Turkish Foreign Minister Ysmail Cem offered to increase cooperation with these countries regarding security issues. /Turkish Daily News/

    [06] BAKU-CEYHAN'S CAPACITY TO BE INCREASED

    Baku-Ceyhan oil pipeline's capacity, which has been planned as 50 million tons annually, will be increased two folds thanks to the new petroleum found in Kazakhstan. Director of Baku-Ceyhan Project Gokhan Bildaci said there are rich and vast reserves in Kazakhstan and added: "The Kazakhstan government is willing to transport its oil through Baku-Ceyhan pipeline.Our intention is to hold talks with Kazakh officials to increase the capacity of the pipeline from 50 million tons to 100 million tons." /Aksam/

    [07] POLICE SEIZE 229 KGS OF MORPHINE IN HAKKARI

    A police operation launched against drug smugglers in the eastern province of Hakkari resulted in the detention of five people and seizure of 229 kilograms of base morphine. Officials stated that market value of the seized base morphine was TL 2 trillion. Moreover, Hakkari Governor Orhan Isin stated that since the beginning of the year, police forces had seized approximately 870 kgs of heroin, 1615 metric tons of narcotics,442 kgs of base morphine and 303 kgs of hashish. /Turkish Daily News/

    [08] INTERNET USAGE SNOWBALLING

    Results of a survey by an American strategic research company on 30 countries show that Internet usage in Turkey has increased faster than any other country in the last two years. The United States ranks a close second to Turkey. On the subject of using the Web to make money, Turkey ranks second behind Japan and is followed by Saudi Arabia, Germany and Taiwan. /Turkish Daily News/

    [09] HAGIA SOFIA CANDIDATE FOR "NEW SEVEN WONDERS OF THE WORLD"

    The World Cultural Heritage Center, affiliated with the UNESCO, organized a poll in the internet to elect the new seven wonders of the world. Hagia Sofia in Istanbul is one of the candidates for the wonders. Others include Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal in India, Potala Place in Tibet, the town of Timbuktu in Mali, the Collesseum in Rome, the Kremlin and Red Square in Moscow, the Mayan Pyramids in Mexico, Eiffel Tower in Paris and Pisa Tower in Italy. /Hurriyet/

    [10] TURKISH FASHION FAIR IN MOSCOW

    Turkish textile and leather firms have speeded up their activities to strenghten their position in Russian market again. 50 textile and 50 leather firms participated in the Turkish Fashion Fair which was organized by the Turkish businessmen in Moscow on Aug. 10-12. /Turkiye/

    [11] CHESS OLYMPICS TO BE HELD IN ISTANBUL

    Istanbul will host the 34th World Chess Olympics between October 28 and November 12, 2000, at Lutfi Kirdar Congress and Exhibition Centre. 200 chess masters from 120 countries will participate in the Chess Olympics. The organization was introduced at the Olympics House in Atakoy yesterday, which was attended by the State Minister Responsible for Sports Fikret Unlu, Chairman of the Turkish Committee of Olympics Sinan Erdem, Chairman of the International Chess Federation Emrehan Halici and a chess player from the national team, Betul Ceren Yildiz. /Aksam/
