[01] "FIRST LAWS THEN ELECTIONS"
Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz, noting that elections will be held
following the promulgation of laws currently on the agenda of the
Turkish Parliament, said that the structure of the election government
will be determined following further meetings. Yilmaz stated that there
was no problem with the partners of the coalition government and added
that an election protocol agreed between himself and Republican People's
Party (CHP) Leader Deniz Baykal, although yet unsigned, was actually in

[02] ADVISER FOR THY'S SALE
The firm which will render internal and external advisory and
mediatory services for the privatization of the public share in Turkish
Airlines (THY) will be Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB). In order to
decide on the firm, letters of invitation were sent to eight firms on 11

[03] ERCEL IN LONDON
Head of the Central Bank Gazi Ercel delivered a speech in London
yesterday at a meeting on the "Euro effect on developing economies and
Turkey's situation". Ercel said: "I believe that Turkey will receive a
larger share from international capital flow with the globalization
trend in the world economy". Ercel recalled that Europe was the biggest
commercial partner of Turkey. /Hurriyet/
[04] INFORMATION CONFERENCE IN ISTANBUL
A conference on "Policies and strategies for a Europe-Mediterranean
information society" will be held in Istanbul on 15-16 June. The
conference is organized by the Turkish Informatics Foundation and
Bogazici University with the support of the European Commission.

[05] THREE-YEAR SWISS VISA FOR TURKS
The Swiss Chamber of Commerce has stated that new arrangements made
by the Swiss Federation Council for the entry of foreigners into
Switzerland will pave the way for three-year visa for Turkish citizens.
According to this, Turkish citizens, who pay regular commercial visits
to Switzerland, will be able to receive three-year visa within the
framework of certain conditions. /Hurriyet/
[06] "IF WAR EXPLODES, IT WILL NOT FAVOUR GREEK CYPRIOTS"
Britain's Independent newspaper said in its yesterday's issue that
the deployment of Russian-made S-300 missiles in southern Cyprus will
not adversely affect Turkey's strategic advantage in the region. The
newspaper added: "Turkey is only 40 miles away from Cyprus".

[07] S-300 MISSILES DELIVERY IN OCTOBER
The Greek Cypriot Administration announced yesterday that the
delivery of Russian-made S-300 missiles had been postponed to the end of
October. Officials explained that the reason for the postponement was
to protect the tourism season from negative effects. It is known that
important numbers of tourists have already cancelled their reservations
because of fears of the risk of a military confrontation on the island.

[08] BIDDING WARNING FOR FRANCE
It is reported that if the French Senate approves the so-called
Armenian genocide bill, Turkish Naval Forces will not invite French
firms to bid for Turkish military aircraft purchases. The decision as
to whether the French Thomson CSF aircraft producer, which is interested
in a $150 million contract, will be invited to bid or not, will be given
following the decision of the French Senate. Last week, Turkey
postponed an agreement according to which it was planning to purchase
Eryx tank destroyer missiles from the French Aerospatiale firm for $2.7
billion.
Meanwhile, Commander of the French Land Forces, Gen.Philippe
Lemercier will visit Ankara on June 14. Turkish representatives will
then convey their concern over the so-called Armenian genocide bill.

[09] DRAFT BILL ON ALLEGED ARMENIAN GENOCIDE TO BE POSTPONED
At the end of yesterday's session of the French Senate, it was
announced that a draft bill about an alleged Armenian genocide by the
Turks was not among topics to be discussed until the end of June.
Diplomatic sources noted that it could be said that French government
might be using tactics to delay voting on the draft bill in parliament.

[10] UYGUN RESIGNS FROM DTP
Afyon Deputy Kubilay Uygun resigned from the Democrat Turkey Party
(DTP) yesterday. Thus the number of DTP seats in Parliament has fallen

[11] DEMIREL AND YILMAZ AT EPHESUS '98
President Suleyman Demirel and Prime Minister Mesut Yilmaz will
today observe the 'Ephesus '98 Exercise', one of the planned exercises
carried out by the Turkish Armed Forces in Seferihisar, Doganbey Gulf,
Izmir. Chief of General Staff Gen.Ismail Hakki Karadayi and force

[12] WORLD BANK CREDIT FOR EIGHT-YEAR EDUCATION PROGRAMME
Although to date TL 105.854 trillion has been saved in public
donations for the new eight-year uninterrupted basic education
programme, National Education Minister Hikmet Ulugbay said yesterday
that the World Bank would send the first part of a $600 million in
credit for the programme to Turkey next month. /Cumhuriyet/
[13] TUSIAD MEETING IN DIYARBAKIR
Turkish industrialists and businessmen meet today in Diyarbakir
under the chairmanshio of the Turkish Industrialists' and Businessmen's
Association (TUSIAD). The current economic and political situations in
Turkey and regional development projects are among the topics on the

[14] MOODY'S LOOKS POSITIVELY AT TURKISH ECONOMY
After the positive statements of the deputy chairman of the
International Monetary Fund (IMF), Stanley Fischer at the end of his
visit to Turkey and also after the positive messages in a recent OECD
report about the Turkish economy, Moody's, one of the leading rating
establishments has also shown a constructive attitude towards the
economy. David Larson, responsible for the Turkish desk at Moody's said
that they shared parallel views with IMF about the Turkish economy, and
that they would up-grade Turkey's credit rating to 'positive' from
'stable'. He added: "There have been courageous developments in the
economy. Inflation is decreasing. We hope that the Turkish economy
rating will further improve very soon." /Milliyet/
[15] ITALIANS VISITING TRNC
A 24-member Italian delegation is today going to the Turkish
Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to discuss the Cyprus issue and
initial a dialogue process. The delegation will meet with President
Rauf Denktas, Prime Minister Dervis Eroglu and Foreign Minister Taner
Etkin between 12-15 June. It is announced that the delegation would
like to form a TRNC lobby in the Italian Parliament. /Sabah/
[16] IRELAND TO OPEN EMBASSY IN ANKARA
According to a statement by the Foreign Minister of Ireland, David
Andrew, yesterday, the Irish government has decided to open an embassy
in Ankara. The Turkish Foreign Ministry has welcomed Ireland's decision
by saying that Turkey has had an embassy in Dublin since 1973. /Sabah/
[17] ASPENDOS FESTIVAL BEGINS ON JUNE 13
The Fifth Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival
organized by the Culture Ministry General Directorate State Opera and
Ballet will be held on June 13-July 4. President Suleyman Demirel will
