[01] CONSUMER PROTECTION FOR TOURISTSIn a move to protect tourists from being ripped-off by opportunist vendors of all kinds, the Tourism Ministry has published a small booklet in four languages that explains consumer rights in Turkey.The Ministry hopes to thus do away with bad impressions about Turkey generated by dishonest shopkeepers and street sellers who see tourists as an easy way to make money. Printed in English, French, Russian and German the booklet targets the major groups of tourists who come to Turkey. It gives details about what can be done to recover losses, legal action and mediatory commissions to resolve disagreements. /Sabah/ [02] PKK PLANNING NEW ACTIONIn the wake of a severe mauling by Turkish military units in the border regions and northern Iraq, the PKK terrorist organization is rebuilding and planning new action to sabotage security throughout Turkey. According to security forces representatives, the PKK is clearing out what it sees as internal friction prior to beginning a new terror campaign, which sources claim is being supported by Greece.Reports suggest that the PKK plans to use better trained and educated terrorists to avoid the complications that come from deploying fanatics and individuals with social and other problems. /Sabah/ [03] "TURKEY, AN ECONOMIC GIANT"Noting that he saw Turkey as a dynamic economic giant, Honorary Director of the Information Office of the European Union (EU), Guy Vanhaeverbeke, said that Turkey was not only the economic but also the political giant of the Eastern Mediterranean. Speaking at a seminar organized by the EU at the Bursa Chamber of Industry and Trade, on "Europe-Mediterranean Partnership and Turkey's role in this Partnership", Vanhaeverbeke said that with its human, agricultural and water resources Turkey played a catalyst role in its region. /Milliyet/[04] "WE ARE IN FRONT OF EUROPE IN GLOBALIZATION"The Turkish Young Businessmen's Association (TUGIAD) represented Turkey at the 7th European Young Businessmen's Associations Confederation between 27-29 November in Vienna. Developments supporting globalization, the information society, business organization, the role of regional markets in globalization and determining the legal framework for new economic and social realities were discussed at the forum.Murat Bekdik, Chairman of TUGIAD, said that Turkey was in front of Europe in the globalization process. He added that Turkey had already met its reponsibilities as called for by EU membership and that members of the European Parliament, who had cast "yes" votes for customs union agreement, should not now use "no" votes against the full membership. /Milliyet/ [05] DEMIREL TO GULF REGIONPresident Suleyman Demirel will visit Oman and the United Arab Emirates on 1-14 December upon official invitations of Oman Sultan Qaboos bin Said and Head of the United Arab Emirates Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahayan. According to an official statement by the presidential press office, Demirel will be accompanied by State Ministes Metin Gurdere and Mehmet Battali. /Milliyet/Cumhuriyet_[06] NEW ATHENS FORMULAAthens, determined to veto Turkey's invitation to attend the upcoming European Conference, has put forward a new formula under pressure from the European Union (EU). Accordingly, Athens has sent a message to the other EU member countries through Luxembourg saying that it would accept a "European Conference" to be formed on condition that Turkey's attendence in the Conference is determined at the EU summit to be held in June in Britain. Besides the postponement formula, Athens also announced that it would accept a meeting of the Turkish-Greek Wise Men Committee to be held immediately after the EU summit in order to discuss problems between the two countries. /Milliyet/[07] DAGDAS RESIGNS FROM DTPDemocratic Turkey Party (DTP) Deputy Chairman Gurcan Dagdas has resigned from his party, the Anatolia news agency reported over the weekend. With Dagdas' resignation the number of seats held by the DTP has dropped to 20.[08] 33 DEATH PENALTIES IN SIVAS ARSON TRIALOn Friday, the Ankara court rendered its final decision in the Sivas arson case. 33 of the suspects responsible for killing 37 people by setting to fire a hotel in Sivas in 1993, have been sentenced to capital punishment. 14 of the 127 suspects have been cleared, and the others have been sentenced to 20-22 years imprisonment.[09] NATIONAL CENSUS HELD YESTERDAYStreet life in Turkey ground to a halt yesterday as a daytime curfew imposed for a census kept people cooped-up in their houses. Papers report that this will be the last time such a curfew is imposed. People were asked questions on their education, age and place of residence. Along with the census, a voter registration was held.State Statistics Institute officials said that the results will come in 40-50 days. The last census revealed that the Turkish population numbered 56.5 million. With an annual population growth rate of 2 percent, the present population of the country is estimated as 64 million. /All papers/ [10] TURCO-RUSSIAN ECONOMIC COOPERATION DRIVEState Minister Gunes Taner is paying an official visit to Moscow on the eve of Russian Prime Minister Victor Chermomirdin's visit to Turkey scheduled for December 14-16. Taner stressed that they were targeting to increase the volume of bilateral trade from $12 million to $50 million. During his contacts with Russian officials, Taner took in hand five agreements for improving bilateral cooperation that will be signed during Chernomirdin's visit to Ankara.Over the weekend, the papers gave extensive coverage to a giant super market jointly set up in Moscow by Koc Holding and Enka Construction Compny. Russians were flowing to the market, and on the very first day huge amounts of goods were sold.
