[03] TRNC IS AN OFFICIAL MEMBER OF UNIDO

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is beginning to be recognized by international organizations. The UN Industrial Development Organization's (UNIDO) section devoted to promoting free trade has accepted the TRNC as an "official member" of the association. The trade section's guide book, consisting of general information on its 38 members and the latest data on them, also mentions the "TRNC" as well as Turkey as members. The guide suggests that Turkey has good economic potential and that the free trade zone in the TRNC promotes trade with Turkey, the US, Britain, Hong Kong and Germany. /Milliyet/

[04] WASHINGTON OKAYS TURKEY-TURKMENISTAN GAS PIPELINE VIA IRAN

The US administration reportedly will not move to block construction of a natural gas pipeline between Turkey and Turkmenistan via Iran. Spokeswoman for the US National Security Council, Anne Luzzatto, said: "The White House does not believe that the construction of a natural gas pipeline between Turkey-Turkmenistan via Iran will violate the ILSA (Iran Libya Sanctions Act)". Although the pipeline will serve Iranian interests on a minimal level, basically it is for the marketing of Central Asian energy resources, Luzzatto explained. /Hurriyet/

[05] UNDERGROUND ECONOMY TO BE REGISTERED

Turkey plans to form a free trade zone in order to legitimize the unregistered economy -called the suitcase trade-. The trade zone will include two of Istanbul's biggest open bazaars, Sali and Laleli, and will later include Turkish Cyprus. Under the new arrangement, a foreigner who buys goods in Turkey and wants to export the goods in his or her suitcase would have to declare the goods at bureaus that will be located in the bazaars. The goods would be delivered to the Sali bazaar shipping department and then to the person's address in his or her own country. /Hurriyet/
