TURKISH PRESS REVIEWTUESDAY NOVEMBER 26, 1996Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] DEMIREL GOING TO LISBONPresident Demirel will set off this coming Sunday on a three day trip to Lisbon. During his visit Demirel will talk with a large number of officials there and participate in a number of meetings. It is anticipated that Demirel will also sign a number of new agreements. The president also hopes to speak with most of the top officials attending a WEU conference in Lisbon. /Hurriyet/[02] EU INVITES ERBAKANAt a meeting of EU Foreign Ministers, it was decided that Turkish Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan should be invited to a banquet at the EU Summit to be held at the heads of state and government level on 13-14 December in Dublin, Ireland. On the other hand, EU Foreign Ministers gave no response to the request of Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller for a gathering of the Turkey-EU Association Council supposed to be held on 6 December and postponed it to next year. Foreign Minister of Ireland, EU Term-President, Dick Spring, said at a press conference that the Association Council would convene next year as soon as possible. /Milliyet/[03] NEW REVENUE RASING PACKAGE RELEASEDAt a press conference yesterday, Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan released the third Economic Revenues Package of the Refahyol coalition government. The package promising a revenue of $10 billion, includes measures such as the renting of energy power plants, pension opportunities for Turkish workers abroad and a 50 percent reduction in entrepreneurs' past debts to the state. /Milliyet/[04] CILLER TO VISIT RUSSIAForeign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Tansu Ciller will visit Moscow on December 18-19. This visit has gained importance in the light of increasing tension in Turkey-EU relations. Diplomatic sources evaluate this visit as a third message to the EU after Turkey declared her decision to block the use of NATO facilities in WEU operations and rejected the MEDA fund. Even though there are some problems between Turkey and Russia, recent developments have drawn these two countries closer together. During her visit Ciller will meet Prime Minister Yevgeni Primakov and Foreign Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin. Depending on his health condition, President Yeltsin could also receive Ciller. /Cumhuriyet/[05] LOCAL MANAGEMENT CONFERENCEEnergy and Natural Resources Minister Recai Kutan has gone to France to attend a conference on "Local Management of Water Resources of European Mediterranean Countries". Following the conference, Kutan will proceed from Marseille to Paris and will meet French Industry and Telecommunications Minister Frank Borotra. /Cumhuriyet/[06] TURKEY WANTS EUROPEChairman of the Foreign Capital Association (YASED) Yavuz Canevi said at an annual meeting of the Turco-Irish Business Council that there was no need for Irish businessmen to be concerned over the implementations of the REFAHYOL coalition government in Turkey. Recalling that the Turkish government mostly dealt with Muslim countries from the economic standpoint, Canevi said: "Don't worry. The percentage of those who do not want to get closer to Muslim countries is 80 %". /Cumhuriyet/[07] GREEKS ANNOY DENKTAS WITH FAKED PHOTOThe Greek community on Cyprus has annoyed President Rauf Denktas of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), by publishing a faked-up photo of Denktas with a caption accusing him of blocking agreement on the island.The Periodiko magazine depicts Denktas surrounded by a frame of barbed wire and writes that Denktas is the biggest threat to peace on Cyprus. /Hurriyet/ [08] JUSTICE MINISTER TO TOUR EUROPEAN PRISONSMinister of Justice Sevket Kazan will soon visit prisons in Germany and France and also take notes on certain aspects of the legal systems in those countries.Minister Kazan said yesterday that reports by the European Court of Human Rights were nothing but scandalous and he condemned the decisions of the Court regarding Turkey's human rights record. Kazan will take up matters concerning the rights of Turkish citizens in prisons in France and Germany. Kazan said yesterday that he will be speaking with the President of Strasbourg Court of Human Rights about the recent decisions of the court as they affect Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/ [09] PETROL FOR FOOD DEAL WITH IRAQ ON THE WAYAfter months of painful negotiation, it looks as though a deal between Iraq and the UN for the restricted sale of Iraq petrol on the international market will go ahead.The UN is about to agree to lifting its economic embargo against Iraq and allow limited sales of petrol so that Iraq can buy needed food and medical supplies. Turkey is following developments closely because the petrol will be delivered through pipelines that cross Turkey to port outlets in Turkey. The US has withdrawn its objections to the deal, opening the way for the agreement to finally come into operation. /Cumhuriyet/ [10] RELIGIOUS PRESSURE IN THRACEThe Greek authorities in Thrace are again exerting pressure against the Turkish minority there through religious channels- with court rulings on permissable dimensions for mosques and restrictions on the height of minnarets. The Turkish community in Thrace has already lodged objections to the Greek rulings through the local courts. /Cumhuriyet/[11] CAPPADOCIA TO BE PROMOTED IN TOKYOThe unique Turkish region of Cappadocia will be promoted at a tourism fair to be held in Tokyo, Japan on 6-9 December.
