[01] CILLER:"TURKEY-JORDAN CAN COOPERATE ON DEFENSE ISSUES"Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller said in Amman on Monday that there were many possibilities for cooperation between Jordan and Turkey on defense issues. Ciller met with Jordanian Prime Minister Abdul Kerim Al-Kabariti during her two day working visit to Amman. Kabariti noted Turkey's importance in the region and said that Turkey-Jordan were two important Muslim countries who could make contributions to democracy and tolerance in the region.Minister of Energy and Natural Resources Recai Kutan, who accompanied Ciller on her visit, said after the meetings that Jordan wished to buy Manavgat River water and that Turkey had welcomed this idea./All Papers/ [02] US GETTING PREPARED FOR CYPRUS MOVEIn the aftermath of the presidential election in the United States, U.S. emissaries reopened Cyprus contacts in Greece. In Ankara, meanwhile, Prime Minister Erbakan has signaled that his administration prefers the "peaceful coexistence" of "two states" on the island.Washington is sending a new team to the area today, headed by Carey Cavanaugh, director for Southern European Affairs at the State Department, with the possibility of establishing a federal Cyprus settlement. Deconfrontation measures top the agenda of the U.S. team, which will also visit southern and northern Cyprus later this week for talks with Greek Cypriot leader Glafkos Clerides and President Rauf Denktas./All Papers/ [03] MINISTER YILMAZ IN CAIRO FOR MENA ECONOMIC SUMMITState Minister Ayfer Yilmaz has gone to Egypt to attend the Middle East and North Africa Economic Summit to be held in Cairo from November 12 to 14 under the coordination of the World EconomicForum (WEF).She told reporters before her departure that the conference aimed at the reformation of international infrastructures and she pointed out Turkey's importance in the region./All Papers/ [04] TURKEY'S TRADE VOLUME WITH M-8 COUNTRIES EXCEEDS $ 2.2 BLTurkey's trade volume has reached $ 2.2 billion with the M-8 countries including Iran, Malaysia, Pakistan, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Nigeria. According to a study by the State Planning Institution (DPT) entitled "Foreign Trade between Turkey and the Islamic Countries", Turkey's exports to the other seven countries in the group totaled $ 756 million while imports accounted for $ 1.4 billion. Iran marked the largest chunk of the trade volume with $ 958 million, followed by Egypt with $ 457 million and Malaysia with $ 372 million. Turkey is also shooting for an import-export balance in the near future./All Papers/[05] TEXTILE EXPORTS FROM GAP UP BY 20.5 %Turkey's textile exports from Southeastern Anatolia Project (GAP) provinces increased by 20.5 % in the January-October period -reaching $ 115 million, according to the Union of Southeastern Anatolia Textile and Raw Materials Exporters.Last year's exports stood at $ 95.428 million during the corresponding period last year./All Papers/ [06] SCALE ECE OPENS OFFICE IN TURKEYScale Ece, a franchise of the Swedish firm Scala International AB, which provides software systems for local and global business management, has opened a financial software and service office in Turkey. This new office aims to serve what it sees as the rapidly developing markets in this country. "Our new office aims to develop customer potential and will intensify its sales to international companies that have invested in Turkey and to the developing Turkish private sector," Scala Turkey Chairman Andrey Shabanov said. The company has, at present, 12 personnel in Turkey but plans to increase this number to 15 or 20 in 1997./All Papers/[07] CILLER WARNS EUForeign Minister Ciller has sent warning signals to EU term president Dick Spring saying that Turkey expects the EU to respond to Turkey's July declaration about Turkey-Greek relations -especially in connection with developments in the Aegean Sea region.Ciller said yesterday that Turkey wants an official EU reply to Turkey's demands as specified in the declaration, and warned that more delay could lead to a cooling in Turkey-EU relations. /All papers/ [08] US COMMUNICATIONS GIANTS EYEING TURKEYGiant companies in the US telecommunications sector are jockeying to be in position to get the best deal out of privatization projects in the Turkish communications sectors.Big US names like Motorola, COMSAT, Sun Microsystems, Phoenix and others are hustling Turkish officials in Ankara as new deals loom up. /Cumhuriyet/ [09] IRAQI COMMERCE MINISTER VISITS ANKARADuring his recent visit to Turkey Iraqi Commerce Minister Muhammed Mehdi Saleh said that Iraq was for improving commercial relations with Turkey. State Minister Ahmet Cemil Tunc pointed out that the UN embargo imposed against Iraq was a heavy burden also for Turkey,noting that the loads of 30,000 trucks carrying goods to Iraq had been left rotting in eastern and southeastern Anatolia. /Cumhuriyet/[10] BLACK SEA ECONOMIC COOPERATION TOURISM MEETINGTourism Ministry Undersecretary Nedim Ozturk said that Turkey's goal for the year 2000 was hosting 15 million tourists yearly gaining a revenue of $10 billion.
