[01] US DEFENSE SECRETARY DUE IN ANKARA FOR TALKS ON IRAQU.S. Secretary of Defense William Perry is due in Ankara today for talks relating to the current situation in the Gulf, which analysts expect will include a request by Washington to use Turkish air bases for any potential strike against Iraq.Ankara had discussed the question of the joint Turkish-U.S. Incirlik air base near Adana, with a senior advisor to Saddam Hussein, Hammad Y. Hammadi./All Papers/ [02] CLINTON SENDS THANKS TO ERBAKAN AND CILLERU.S. President Bill CLinton has sent a message to Ankara thanking Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller for their help in evacuating personnel working for Washington in northern Iraq.Clinton's message, conveyed to Foreign Minister Ciller on Sunday by U.S. Ambassador Marc Grossman, came as U.S. agents in northern Iraq began to arrive in Turkey within the framework of evacuation plans worked out between Ankara and Washington. In a statement to journalists after meeting with Ciller, Ambassador Grossman said Turkey had been very helpful in evacuating what he characterized as U.S. personnel from northern Iraq. /All Papers/ [03] TURKEY CALLS ON IRAN TO TAKE MEASURES AGAINST PKKForeign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Tansu Ciller warned Iran over the weekend to fulfill its responsibilities with regrad to the activities of the Kurdsistan Workers' Party (PKK) in Iran.After meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Ekber Velayeti within the framework of a meeting of the Council of Ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) in Izmir on Sunday, Ciller said: "Let us cooperate to resolve this matter together, or let Iran handle the matter, which is our preference. Or let us do what is necessary." She also announced that the security officials from both countries would meet once again on Ssptember 17 to discuss the matter. Iranian Foreign Minister Velayeti was also concerned over the fact that the PKK terrorists were moving into Turkey from Iran and noted that Iran would support the struggle against terrorism. /All Papers/ [04] GREEK CYPRIOT LEADER CLERIDES VOWS TO REDUCE THE TENSION IN CYPRUSGreek Cypriot leader Glafkos Clerides, in what was considered in Ankara as a "suprise statement", said over the weekend that his government would take all necessary measures in order to prevent an increase in tension between the two estranged communities on the island of Cyprus.In a written statement he made in Nicosia, printed by the Anatolia news agency on Saturday, Clerides underlined that they had not given up their efforts to seek a peaceful resolution concerning the problems in Cyprus under the auspices of the U.N. secretary-general. Responding to Clerides, Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas said on Saturday that he found the Greek Cypriot leader's remarks encouraging but stated that had such remarks been made earlier it may have prevented unnecessary deaths. He also reiterated his request to Clerides for face-to-face talks to discuss the "set of ideas" proposed by the U.N. secretary-general for a settlement in the Cyprus dispute. Denktas said that he would like to believe that Clerides' latest statatement was initiating a positive step. [05] BONN JOINS ANKARA IN ATTACKING MED-TVThe German government on Thursday joined Turkey in attacking a Kurdish-language satellite television station which broadcasts from western Europe to the Middle East.In a written reply, reported by the parliamentary news service HIB, said British-based MED-TV was a "propaganda mouthpiece" of the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)./All Papers/ [06] TURKEY ASKS FOR F-16 LOGISTICAL SUPPORT FROM USDespite Congressional opposition in the past which denied Turkey such military orders as 10 Super Cobra attack helicopters and three decommissioned frigates, the Department of Defense has nevertheless notified the U.S. Congress of a new order from Ankara that includes F-16 parts, software and other items.
