Despite the heavy criticism Turkey has received from Russia, Europe and a number of Arab countries on the 10-mile-deep security zone it decided to establish in northern Iraq against separatist Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) incursions, Ankara continues to enjoy full support of Washington on the matter.

State Department spokesman Nicholas Burns told journalists on Monday that Secretary of State Warren Christopher called Turkish Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller on Sunday and was pleased with what he heard from his Turkish counterpart on the security zone.

"The Secretary indepth discussions about the reasons for the Turkish action. We have been told that this action will be limited in duration; that there will be no stationing of Turkish troops inside northern Iraq.
