TURKISH PRESS REVIEWTUESDAY AUGUST 27, 1996Summary of the political and economic news in the Turkish press this morning[01] ERBAKAN'S FIRST GUEST FROM THE WESTItalian Prime Minister Roman Prodi will pay a working visit to Turkey on 3 September. During Prodi's visit to Ankara, the main topic of discussions will be Turco-EU relations. The Italian Prime Minister, who was the last term president of the EU and is currently in the Troika, wishes to determine the stand of the Welfare Party (RP)-True Path Party (DYP) coalition government towards the EU. Prodi will also meet Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tansu Ciller. /Hurriyet/[02] TURKISH TRADE MISSION TO VISIT UKRAINE, CHINAA Turkish trade delegation led by State Minister Ayfer Yilmaz will visit Ukraine and China in September to boost bilateral trade. The delegation, including Foreign Trade Deputy Undersecretary Bulent Sahinalp and high-level trade officials as well as textiles, food, ceremics, construction and machinery industrialists, will visit Ukraine between September 2 and 5 and China between September 23 and 27. Representatives from 38 Turkish firms are expected to attend the Ukraine trip to hold bilateral talks in Kiev. The Chinese trip will be the biggest trade mission organized by the government to any nation so far.Turkish and Chinese officials will hold a Joint Economic Commission (KEK) meeting in Ankara on September 2-3 ahead of the trade mission that will focus mainly on Turkey's textile trade. The Chinese delegation for the KEK meeting is headed by Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation Vice-President Li Guo Huo. /All papers/ [03] IZMIR FAIR OPENSTurkish Industry Minister Yalim Erez held bilateral talks with foreign delegations which are visiting Turkey for the opening ceremony of the 65th Izmir International Fair. Erez pointed out that the fair would enliven the economy, and that the visits of foreign delegations would boost international cooperation. He held talks with the delegations from Georgia, Nigeria, Palestine, Romania and Bulgaria and said Turkey would cooperate with all of these countries in many fields. /All papers/[04] ISO SIGNS AN AGREEMENT WITH ROMANIAN COUNTERPARTA solidarity and collaboration agreement was signed yesterday between the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO) and the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Trade. ISO chairman. Husamettin Kavi, in a speech during the ceremony, announced that the private sector was playing a significant role in the changes in Eastern European countries. He added that the efforts at privatization in Turkey and Romania were very important, especially for Romania which has accelerated its privatization process. Kavi also stressed his belief that the Balkans, the Caucasus, the Middle East and the Black Sea Economic Cooperation Organization would play a very important role in tomorrow's world. The ISO chairman also said that there were 3,000 Turkish businessmen in Romania at present, and that their major interests centered in tourism and banking sectors. He added that the number was increasing daily in every field.The chairman of the Romanian Chamber of Commerce and Trade, George Cajocaru, said that Turkey and Romania could potentially be the leading countries of the region owing to their population and size. Cajocaru said that the trading volume between the two countries was $600 million in 1995 and added that it needed to reach at least $1 billion. After the ceremony, talks on the chemical, textile, engineering and construction industries began between the two chambers. /All papers/ [05] TWO TURKS DIE IN AIRCRAFT CRASH IN ENGLANDEnder Erturan, a journalist working in Hurriyet Daily's London office, and his friend, Yunus Osmanaoglu, died when their two-seat light aircraft crashed in an area near Salford in the United Kingdom. It is reported that the crash occurred when Erturan's aircraft was on final approach for landing. An investigation into the crash, which occurred close to Barton Air Force Base, has been initiated. Apparently, Erturan was an amateur pilot, doing most of his flying on weekends. /All papers/[06] BOSNIAN SODIERS IN TURKEYThe second group of 223 persons arrived in Turkey within the scope of training the Bosnian-Croat Federation's Armed Forces. In his speech at a ceremony at the Etimesgut Armoured Unions School and Training Centre on the occasion, Land Forces Training and Doctrine Commander Lieutenant General Izzettin Iyigun said: "We all want to live in peace". /Cumhuriyet/[07] ANKARA INVITED TO KURDISH MEETINGThe US has invited Turkey to the peace meeting planned to be held in London if a cease-fire is reached between Kurdish groups in northern Iraq. It is reported that the US administration contacted the Turkish Foreign Ministry last week and planned to hold a meeting in London with the participation of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Mesut Barzani and Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) leader Celal Talabani. /Hurriyet/[08] TERRORISTS BARRICADE ROADTerrorists barricaded a road close to Refahiye, Erzincan, killing two persons and abducting four others. The barricades were set up at 9:00 o'clock in the yesterday evening at a distance of five kilometers to the town. Two buses and one truck were stopped and Serif Demirtas and civil engineer Omer Battal were killed. The terrorists who were said to number 10 persons then laid hands on the valuables of the passengers and later abducted four of them. /Cumhuriyet/[09] BURIAL OF MARTYRESEveryday coffins of martyres who have fallen in the southeast keep coming in. Yesterday, in 12 separate regions, 14 martyres were laid to rest among tears.The number of military personnel which has been martyred since August 15, 1984, when the PKK started its terrorist activities has reached 4,120. As of the new year, the number of persons in the military slain by the PKK has been 170. Furthermore, in 12 years 4,604 civilians have also fallen victim to terrorist activities. /Sabah/ [10] TURKISH OBSERVERS FOR BOSNIAFor the purpose of overlooking the first free elections in Bosnia-Herzegovina, among the 1,200 specialists sent to the country there are 20 Turkish observers as well.A prime requisite is that the observers be able to drive field-vehicles. The persons chosen are specialists in legal affairs. /Milliyet/ [11] GREEK CYPRIOT ADMINISTRATION: "WE MAY DECLARE WAR ON THE TURKS"Spokesman for the Greek Cypriot administration, Yannakis Kassulides, in his statement on Astra Radio in southern Cyprus said that under present conditions they do not stand a chance in armed combat.He said that they were waging a peaceful struggle within the framework of UN decisions. He added that an armed struggle could be possible if they were sure that the Turks would not go as far as Limasol.
