[04] GO AHEAD FOR CUSTOMS UNIONThe two largest groups in the European Parliament (EP), the Socialists and the Christian Democrats, have both voted in favour of customs union with Turkey. Now it really does seem as if it is all systems go for Turkey and the European Union (EU) customs agreement. The vote of the two largest vote carriers in the EP is essential to Turkey's success in this vital step forward to full membership in the European community. Now all doubts have been removed and a sweeping vote in favour of Turkey is expected on December 13, when there will be a formal vote leading up final decisions at the end of the month. Foreign Minister Deniz Baykal said that the votes of the Socialists and Christian Democrats underscored huge success for the whole country. Noting that customs union was the most vital issue on the agenda, Baykal added that it was even more important than the results of the upcoming general elections. Prime Minister Ciller and Foreign Minister Baykal have been deeply involved in a heavy programme of shuttle diplomacy, visiting the leading EU member countries and talking to top EU ministers in a last minute effort to swing the EU vote in Turkey's favour. Their efforts have paid off. As the president of EP Socialists Group Pauline Green said after yesterday's vote "To say no would be a disaster.
