Ciller, who will pay a visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina following a peace accord signed between Bosnia, Croatia and Serbia following US initiatives, will return to Ankara the same day. /Cumhuriyet/
[02] BAYKAL GOES TO BARCELONATurkey was ready to offer its experience with regional cooperation in the EU's Barcelona Summit to forge stability around the Mediterranean, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Deniz Baykal said yesterday. Baykal, departing for Barcelona, said Turkey was happy to participate in the conference which brings 37 countries' foreign ministers (the EU countries and 12 Mediterranean countries) together. Baykal, while in Barcelona, will meet with various EU foreign ministers to lobby for Turkey's customs union, which is expected to be voted on by the European Parliament on December 13. He is also expected to meet with the leaders of some non-EU countries.The Barcelona Conference aims to set up an institutional basis for deepening ties between the EU and its Mediterranean neighbours. The agenda of the meeting is extensive, from environmental protection to the question of terrorism. The participants want to establish a Euro-Med Free Trade Zone by 2010, except for Syria which cautions that it will not be ready by then. A political declaration will be made at the end of the meeting, and a work programme will be formulated. /Sabah/
[03] GERMAN POLICE HALT PKK RALLIESGerman police broke up an unauthorised rally by Turkish Kurds in Cologne yesterday, detaining about 400 demonstrators, and prevented another protest in the southern city of Stuttgart from going ahead. Cologne police said the demonstrators intended to protest against the banning of the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) by German authorities in November 1993. Scuffles broke out when police tried to disperse the rally. On Saturday, police in the town of Ulm detained about 90 Kurds during an unauthorised rally and confiscated weapons and PKK insignia. Some of those held were suspected of being PKK activists. /Hurriyet/
[04] PKK MILITANTS KILL ONE, INJURE ONEMilitants of the PKK terrorist organization raked a minibus with gunfire, killing one citizen and injuring another. The minibus was on its way to Yemisdere village in Tunceli's Cemisgezek district on Saturday night. Military operations to capture the PKK militants in the region continue. /All papers/
[05] TURKEY PROTESTS TO SYRIA OVER PKK INFILTRATIONSAnkara protested to Damascus for allowing terrorist infiltration into Turkish territory. Following Friday's armed conflict in Yayladag, a township of Hatay, between security forces and terrorists who crossed into Turkey from the Turco-Syrian border, Ankara protested to Syria for not carrying out its responsibility to fight terrorism. The Syrian charge d'affaires in Ankara was called to the Turkish Foreign Ministry yesterday to be told of Turkey's displeasure, a written statement from the Turkish Foreign Ministry said. The statement said that Turkey has brought countless incidents of infiltration to the attention of Damascus in the past and asked for "effective measures" to be taken to prevent infiltration. /Cumhuriyet-Hurriyet/
[06] GEN.KARADAYI FLIES TO BELGIUMGen.Ismail Hakki Karadayi, Chief of General Staff, flew to Belgium on Friday to attend a NATO meeting. Officials from the Office of the Chief of General Staff said that Gen.Karadayi would participate in the 122nd military committee meeting of NATO's chiefs of general staff. /All papers/
[07] POLICE AGREEMENT WITH BOSNIATurkey and Bosnia have signed an agreement which will lead to Turkey sending fifty policemen to Bosnia for security duties. Although the protocol allows for Turkey's share in police duties within the framework of the new peace in the region, the Turkish parliament has yet to make a firm decision on whether to send the police unit or not.The agreement was signed by Interior Minister Teoman Unusan and officials in Bosnia yesterday. Bosnia officials would like to see the Turkish police stationed in Bosnia by December 5. If parliament decides to send the police force, it could stay there for six months, with options to extend if needed. /Hurriyet/
[08] UNESCO: 1996 TO BE YEAR OF NASREDDIN HODJAUNESCO announced on Friday that 1996 will be the year of Nasreddin Hodja, the famous Turkish philosopher, and 1997 will be the year of Hasan Ali Yucel, the famous poet and writer who was the fonder of the Turkish UNESCO national commission. UNESCO officials said that 1996 will be the 700th anniversary of Nasreddin Hodja's death and 1997 will be the 100th anniversary of Hasan Ali Yucel's birth. /All papers/
[09] INCREASE EXPECTED IN RELIGIOUS TOURISMAn increase is expected in the number of US tourists visiting religious sites in Turkey next year. Three seminars have already been held by Turkish travel agents and representatives of American religious groups. Another six travel seminars are scheduled with Jewish and Christian associations during 1996 in the US. American Jewish associations have produced a video about Turkish historical and religious sites. In the first 10 months of 1995, 270,000 American tourists visited Turkey. /Cumhuriyet/
