ANKARA- Turkey's gross national product (GNP) grew by a rapid 9.9 percent
during the first quarter of the current year, following a 0.2 percent drop
in the corresponding period of the previous year, official figures revealed
at the weekend.
The national statistics agency said the Turkish GNP was TL 2.211 quadrillion,
or $26.6 billion, in January-March this year. The GNP growth was 8.1
percent last year.
The State Institute of Statistics (DIE) said the gross domestic product
(GDP) also jumped 8.2 percent in the year's first quarter, faster than 7.7
percent at the end of 1995.
The DIE said, however, that this most recent series of national income
statistics was only provisional because the statistics agency had not yet
finalized foreign trade statistics due to restructuring work at the Turkish
customs gates.
"The foreign trade figures we used in the (first quarter) national income
statistics are estimates based on last year's trade figures and tax
declarations covering the first quarter of the current year," the DIE said
in a statement.
The national income figures revealed that import business was the most
active sector during the first quarter. Import taxes jumped by 33.1
percent. Trade and industry also contributed significantly to rapid growth
in the first quarter. Trading and industrial activity grew by 12.6 percent
and 8.2 percent respectively.
Also, the DIE said, the communication-transport sector in January-March
grew by 7.3 percent, financial institutions by 0.8 percent, ownership of
dwellings by 2.4 percent, self-employed businesses and services by 7.2
percent, government services by 0.3 percent and non-profit organizations by
2.8 percent. In the same period, agricultural output dropped by 2.8 percent
and construction by 1.4 percent.
