NEWS REVIEW, REPUBLIKA SRPSKA

BANJALUKA - President of Republika Srpska (RS) Biljana Plavsic, held talks in Banjaluka with Italian ambassador to B-H Mikele Velensise on possibilities of economic cooperation between RS and Italy. As the RS presidential cabinet announced, a member of the Italian economic experts team was agreed to visit Banjaluka to study the economic situation in RS based upon which a subsequent final decision would be made on kinds of assistance and cooperation most appropriate for RS at this moment.

SARAJEVO - RS finance minister, Drago Simic, talked in Pale with deputy chief of EU Observing Mission Coordination Centre, Joanis Cakiridis, on the World Bank part in financial aid to RS concerning its budgetary needs. "I asked for a bit more understanding, i.e. for more concrete fulfilment of obligations, especially in regard to the Federation of B-H being provided with financial and other aid more regularly that RS", Simic added.

SARAJEVO - The minister for civil affairs and communications and deputy foreign minister in the B-H Council of Ministers, Spasoja Albijanic and Dragan Bozanic, talked in Pale with EU representative Christer Telin on technical improvement of communications between representatives in the joint bodies in the B-H Federation and RS. "My task is to make sure that all three institutions - Presidency, Council of Ministers and Constitutional Court - are functional like similar institutions in West European countries", stated former deputy Swedish minister of justice, Christer Telin.

BRUSSELS - The World Congress of the Serbs condemned takeover of four Serb Radio-TV (SRT) transmitters. SFOR action is incongruous with the Dayton agreement and it represents a blatant interference into Rs internal policy, says the Congress, reports the Flemish Radio.

PARIS - A well-known French writer Patrick Benson stated last night for SRNA that the Serbian people now represent dignity of Europe, for its is confronted to a huge machinery which can destroy it any moment. While commenting SFOR action in which SRT transmission towers were seized and SRT Sudio Pale broadcast interrupted, Benson referred to Pushkin that "the one who has no fears form anything, he fears from being laughed at". "The fact that a TV which ridiculed something was forbidden is the sign that laugh comes above everything", stated Benson, and added that it was not the first time that the USA and its allies behave in third countries as if they conquered them.

BEOGRAD - The president of the Serbian Radical Party (SRS) Vojislav Seselj, assessed the takeover of Serb TV transmitters by SFOR units as "a criminal action to serve the US end goal - destruction of RS". "By seizing the transmitters, the RS leadership from Pale are denied communication with the public and Biljana Plavsic's followers are enabled to bring confusion into public by their lies, vilifications and fabrications of a worst kind", Seselj stated in Belgrade.

DOBOJ - The Association of Refugees in Doboj sent a sharp protest to SFOR regarding the seizing of SRT transmitters, including the one in Duge Njive, near Doboj. SFOR was warned that this "unallowable and undemocratic act by which the right of the Serbian people to freedom of media was denied in the major portion of RS" might draw some consequences.

ROME - SFOR's takeover of the SRT transmitters represent an act without precedent, with a clear political aim of strengthening Biljana Plavsic's preelection positions, writes the Italian paper "Il Giorno". It is about the continuation of a one-sidedness in respect to the political crisis in RS, which can not be attributed to principles of freedom of press and fight against censorship, concludes the Il Giorno. "La Stampa" believes that a "NATO cope" happened, and quotes the SRT general manager Miroslav Toholj that "it is a move without precedent in the modern history of civilised peoples."

STOCKHOLM - A forced takeover of the SRT transmitters in RS by SFOR did not draw attention of Swedish media, while the state TV issued only a brief teletext report. "Dages Neheter" was the only paper to comment the violate act against the SRT, claiming that SFOR was forced to carry out the action because of "abuse of Pale TV during its report on the interview with the Hague Tribunal chief prosecutor, Louise Arbour."

SARAJEVO - The RS member of the Provisional Electoral Commission (PEC), Slobodan Kovac, stated for SRNA in Pale that the PEC approved results of September elections for municipal authorities in RS and B-H Federation for 19 municipalities - three in RS in which Serb political parties got majority. Based upon yesterday's announcement of electoral results, five political parties in Srpski Brod will share power, where 24 out of 45 seats are won by Serbs. Out of 49 seats in Rogatica, Serbs won 28.

DOBOJ - The Rabbi of all Jews in RS and the Federation of B-H, Joseph Mordehay, wished, on the Jewish New Year's Eve in Doboj, the coming 5758 year be the year of happiness, peace, well-being and success of all Jews and their friends. Mordehay that "this should be a year of understanding". The president of the Serb-Jewish Friendship in RS Savo Ivanisevic and president of the Jewish Community in Doboj Atias Mordehay handed over the note of thanks to the Serbian News Agency Branch in Doboj for its contribution for development of friendship between the Serbian and Jewish peoples and the assistance to the Jewish community in RS.
