  • [01] LIFE IN PEACE, FREEDOM AND EQUALITY

President Slobodan Milosevic received Mr. Zoran Knezevic - mayor of the Montenegrin capital Podgorica and the Chairman of the Democratic Socialist Party Chapter in Podgorica - Mr. Predrag Bulatovic accompanied by their Belgrade hosts Nebojsa Covic and Branislav Ivkovic. They informed the President about the traditional convention of political financial and cultural representatives of Belgrade and Podgorica. In fact, "Podgorica Days in Belgrade" is taking place in the Yugoslav capital. Both sides agreed with satisfaction that the two capitals (Serbian and Montenegrin) are involved in close and fruitful cooperation, giving an intense momentum to the overall economic and cultural development of our country. These gatherings promote the strengthening of Yugoslav unity and the success of the efforts to realize the interests of all our citizens who are determined to live in peace, freedom and equality - said the participants of this meeting. (Politika, October 27, 1996)

[02] WE CAN T DO WITHOUT THE WORLD, NOR THE WORLD WITHOUT US

The Yugoslav has been relieved by the removal of the economic sanctions. Judging by the number of delegations that have visited Yugoslavia since, and by the invitations received by Yugoslav businessmen to visit other countries, the world also waited with impatience for the removal of the sanctions. Among other things, this is probably due to the fact that ours is an interesting and essential market both for European and world business. The Yugoslav Chamber of Economy report by the on the activities intended to re-establish and institute cooperation with foreign partners, which clearly indicates the increasingly successful connection between Yugoslav and world economy, with mutual advantage in diverse forms of cooperation. Since the beginning of this year, Yugoslavia has been visited by delegations from Macedonia, Republic of Srpska, Greece, Russian Federation, Bulgaria, Romania, Ukraine, Hungary, China, Belarus, Moldavia, Tajikistan, Italy, Great Britain, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, Holland, Austria, Spain, South Korea, Japan, USA, Canada and the Moslem-Croatian Federation. Numerous individual visits of representatives of large companies, not only from, the listed countries, but also from Egypt, Algeria, Ghana, Cyprus, Jordan, Syria, Israel, Libya and Albania. On the other hand, Yugoslav businessmen have visited France, the Russian Federation, Great Britain, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Argentina, Zimbabwe, Guinea, Ghana, Kenya and Namibia. These visits and talks yielded numerous concrete agreements and contracts on sales and purchases, joint production, investments and joint presence on third markets. (Politika, October 28, 1996)

[03] THE RETURN OF YUGOSLAVIA TO THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY ENDORSED

At the end of the visit to Yugoslavia, Mr. Ulutz Ghurkan - head of the Turkish Great National Assembly delegation - said at the press conference that some bitter experiences from the past have been left aside. He stressed that with Turkish support, Yugoslavia could once again play an important role in Central Asia and Middle East, and added that agreements on the formation of joint committees have been made, as well as accords on stronger banking contacts, improved transports, abolition of visas and avoidance of double taxation. "Yugoslavia and Turkey have to work together on peace solutions, because every time these two countries had an understanding, there was peace in the Balkans," Mr. Ghurkan said. He particularly stressed that Turkey will strive to help the return of FR Yugoslavia into the world community. (Borba, October 26, 1996)

    [04] CHINESE SUPPORT FOR YUGOSLAVIA

"The relations between China and Yugoslavia have a long tradition of friendship, and have resisted the test of time", said Mr. Ju Ankang, Chinese Ambassador to FR Yugoslavia in an interview for "Borba" daily. "Good grounds have been created for further developing bilateral relations and we are convinced that our relations will improve, the Chinese Ambassador said. Commenting the peace process in former Yugoslavia HE Ju Ankang stated: "China has always greatly appreciated the peaceful policy pursued by President Slobodan Milosevic and the Yugoslav Government. Such a peaceful Yugoslav policy plays and important role in the settlement of the crisis in former Yugoslavia and in Bosnia. The recent lifting of the sanctions represents an acknowledgment of such peaceful policy." (Borba, October 26-27, 1996)

[05] THE FIRST MULTIMEDIA ENCYCLOPEDIA IN SERBIAN

The first multimedia encyclopedia in Serbian language in FRY, called "Economic and Business Encyclopedia on CD", promoted at the Belgrade Book Fair, contains the notions and basic information from economy and business in our country. The CD is the result of the joint efforts by "Politika", "Savremena administracija" and the Belgrade Faculty of Economics. One of the leading editors, Dr. Miomir Jaksic - Dean of the Economics Faculty - stressed that this unique multimedia project will offer the possibility of a specific journey through the economic heritage in the past 2 centuries. More than 400 Yugoslav experts and scholars were involved in the making of this great scientific, cultural and social work. (Politika, October 26, 1996)

[06] MUTUAL PRESSURES AND HARASSMENT BETWEEN CROATS AND MOSLEMS

The presidency in exile of the Moslem Stolac County, currently seated in the eastern (Moslem) part of Mostar, revealed that it will interrupt all efforts to ensure the return of 100 Moslem refugees to Stolac, because no one is capable of warranting the safety of Moslems going to this town. In the past month, Moslems exiled from the town by the Croats during the war, occasionally went to the town to rebuild their homes before winter comes. However, all that they would repair during the day, was regularly demolished or burned during the night.

International Police representatives have revealed that 21 Croatia families that have returned from exile to Bugojno, newly left the town ruled by the Moslems for safety reasons. It has been indicated that the Mayor of Bugojno and his assistants are directly obstructing the return of 17.000 exiled Croats to Bugojno, in spite of the agreements made a year ago by Croatian President Tudjman and Moslem leader Izetbegovic.

Croats from Kakanj and Fojnica refuse to return to their home town even though their homes have not been damaged, because no one can guarantee their safety. "Even those that returned had to run again because they were maltreated and harassed by local Moslem population and authorities" said Mr. Stefo Masatovic - Chairman of the Association of Exiled Croats from Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also affirmed that neither Moslem nor Croatian authorities are showing any will to help the return of refugees from other ethnic groups to the territories under their control. (Politika, October 26-27 1996)

    [07] USURPATION OF PROPERTY

The laws and regulations currently valid in Bosnia and Herzegovina allow the usurpation of the houses or apartments owned by absent refugees, even though this in contradiction with the Dayton Agreement - which specifies that refugees have the right to return home or are entitled to a compensation for their property if they refuse to go back - said Dr. Milorad Muratovic - Chairman of the Association for Aid to the Refugees living in FR Yugoslavia. Experts have estimated that the vacated houses and apartments in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina are worth about 100 billion German marks. In Bosnia refugees live in only 10% of the available apartments, while the remaining 90% has been occupied by locals from suburbs and "deserving citizens". (Vecernje Novosti, October 28, 1996)

[08] WASHINGTON STOPPED ARMS DELIVERIES TO B&H

News agencies report that a ship carrying arms destined to the Moslem-Croatian Federation, left the Adriatic port of Ploce without unloading. These same sources also indicate that Washington insists on the resignation of the Federation Defense Minister Hassan Chengic if arms are to be delivered. A US Embassy official in Sarajevo remarked that Chengic continues to maintain close contacts with Iran and that he is trying to undermine the US "Train and Equip" program> to favor Iranian interests. (Vecernje Novosti, October 27, 1996)

[09] FALSE WITNESS SENT BY THE MOSLEM GOVERNMENT

Mr. Grent Nieman - Deputy Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court at the Hague - asked the Judges to consider "null and void" the deposition given by witness "L" at the trial against Bosnian Serb Dusan Tadic, charged of having committed crimes of war. In view of this fact the Court has withdrawn the charges against Tadic regarding the Trnopolje prison camp. The key witness of the prosecution - Dragan Opacic (called witness L until now), confessed that he lied to the judges in his first statement and that he had been sent by the Moslem Government in Sarajevo to falsely testify before the Hague tribunal. He explained that he had been ordered to do so under the threat of being killed. (Ekspres, October 26, 1996)

[10] "VJESNIK" ABOUT THE "NON-DIPLOMATIC" BEHAVIOR OF THE US AMBASSADOR

"Vjesnik", the leading pro-government political daily in Croatia, strongly criticized the US Ambassador to Croatia - Mr. Peter Galbraith, affirming that he is publicly assuming the role of "arbiter" concerning issues that "...diplomats regularly avoid to make comments about, because they represent internal affairs of the host country". "How is it that we Croats have to bear with Mr. Galbraith? How is it that he has become a specific media personality dispensing political instructions?" - asks the author of the article. The explanation he offers is that "some specific subordinate mentality" has taken root in the Croatian political conscience. The thing that "links the subordinate mentality to this gentleman" is the aspiration of given individuals in Croatia to find a sufficiently influential foreigner "they can appeal and plead to - turning him into some sort of political arbiter, justifying the position of those that see present-day Croatia as some sort of personal punishment , concludes the "Vjesnik" article. This harsh criticism has been directed against the US Ambassador for daring to moderately reproach and cautiously admonish Croatia for breaching human rights. (Politika, October 28, 1996)

[11] PROTESTS BY ANTI-FASCISTS AND JEWS

At the local cemetery in the Croatian coastal town of Omis, the controversial ceremony "reconciling" Fascist and Resistance soldiers - AFP reports. The remains of 104 members of "Domobran" units, 6 Ustasha members and 2 Partisans have been laid in a common grave. The Mayor of Omis - Mr. Ivan Skaricic stated several days ago that this is merely an act of "reconciliation of the Croatian nation". The surviving members of the WW II partisan forces and the Jewish community in Split protested against and opposed the ceremony. (Nasa Borba, October 28, 1996)
