Self-styled anarchists late Friday occupied university buildings in Athens and the northern city of Thessaloniki after clashes with police.

The masked protesters, who have been showing anger since student elections last week, began throwing stones and fire bombs after anti-racism demonstrations in the two cities, police said.

They said a face off with the demonstrators was continuing into the night around the Pantios University in Athens, with nearby luxury hotels and car showrooms coming under attack. dpa sc

April 15, 1995, Saturday, BC cycle LENGTH: 135 words HEADLINE: Basketball- Greek fans brawl at Rome's Colosseum DATELINE: ROME, April 15 BODY: Police were called to break up fighting on Saturday between more than 100 Greek basketball fans at Rome's ancient Colosseum. Three Greek fans were treated in hospital for minor injuries after the clashes as police cautioned 108 fans from rival teams Olympiakos and Panathinaikos. The Greeks were returning by coach from this week's European Champion Clubs' Cup finals in the Spanish town of Zaragoza. They were in transit in Rome on their way to catch ferries in the southeastern Italian port of Brindisi. The two Greek teams have a fanatical rivalry that has boiled over into violence in the past. Olympiakos were beaten 73-61 in the final on Thursday by Real Madrid. Panathinaikos defeated French team Limoges 91-77 for third place, having been beaten by their Greek rivals in the semifinals.

April 13, 1995 15:42 Eastern Time SECTION: International news LENGTH: 267 words HEADLINE: Greek basketball fans in mass brawl DATELINE: BARCELONA, Spain, April 13 BODY: About 200 supporters of rival Greek basketball teams fought a pitched battle near Tarragona on Thursday, forcing police to fire shots in the air to restore order. The fans clashed at a motorway rest area as they headed for the European club championships at Zaragoza in northeastern Spain. The trouble started when two coaches of Olimpiakos fans arrived. Thugs wielding baseball bats and chains began threatening people before setting on a small group of Panathinaikos supporters. But minutes later, three coachloads of Panathinaikos fans arrived on the scene. Having found out what had happened, they launched into a pitched battle -- also throwing stones and bricks at police. Spanish police broke up the fighting by firing into the air. They later confiscated a range of weapons including a hand gun and two long-bladed knives. Officers said those involved in the clashes behaved like "madmen" and were even attacking children. Four of the coaches were later given a police escort to Zaragoza. The fifth, which had been badly damaged in the fighting, and all of its passengers, was kept behind, pending a replacement coach.
